Mac presses for voter deadline extension

(CNS): Opposition Leader McKeeva Bush has called on the Elections Office to push back the year-end deadline for eligible people to register as voters in time for the 2017 General Election. Wesley Howell, the supervisor of elections, told CNS that they are considering pushing back the deadline into January and expect to decide soon. He noted that there was an extension ahead of the 2013 poll and the same thing could happen again. Bush posted his concerns on his Facebook page this week as he urged people to register.

The long deadline is to allow elections officials and the public time to check the accuracy of the list before it is finalised by 1 April 2017, when it becomes the official voter register.

Bush warned that the 2017 poll would be a “confusing election with the new changes”, and he encouraged everyone to do their part and ensure the people’s democratic right to choose their representatives was not hampered by people not knowing what to do or where to go to vote.

“Firstly, let’s ensure we are all registered and we can also do our part by ensuring our own family and friends have done so,” he said on his social media posting.

Currently there are 18,457 people registered to vote but the Elections Office has been through a voter drive and register clean up over the last month and the list is expected to increase significantly before the final roll call for election day.

I think voter registration should stay open until at least nomination day. Why do we voters have to get in line before any politician declares for a constituency ? So we are registering, but for who ?

I think we should have no time limits on anything and no compliance on anything and no enforcement of anything. Hey, wait…

I have no idea where the people from the Elections Office have been doing their voter registration drive, but I don’t know anyone who has seen them.

We had a team from wrong district show up to try to register us. Worse, the historic boundary from the district they represented had not changed! Nobody from our district ever came.

You should have to be able to read to vote. That would clear up a lot of the confusion.

Do we have to get a new card if we don’t live in the same district as the last election or because the voting system is new this time round?

What is going to happen if someone has been waiting for months for their status to be granted. Are they not being deprived of their democratic rights?
