(CNS): A major car crash on the Esterley Tibbetts Highway behind Buckingham Square closed both lanes on Friday evening just after 4pm when the weekend rush hour began. Two people were said to have sustained injuries, though not life threatening, and they were taken to hospital. The smash happened across the south bound lanes, with one of the vehicles flipping, but emergency services had to close both sides of the highway to get to the wrecks, diverting traffic on to the West Bay Road for well over an hour.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of construction workers that get to and from work every day bouncing around in the cargo beds of trucks. Just like the many unbelted toddlers roaming the interiors of cars, the “Police” are seemingly waiting for avoidable tragedies to happen. RFID plates won’t address many forms of roaduser negligence. We need a functional full-time traffic unit that can self-fund by writing the easy and well-earned tickets.

How hard is it to have cops on the side of the road watching traffic? When they see something illegal then they pull them over. They focus on traffic back up tactics like roadblocks in daylight where it is easy to avoid. Cops break the traffic laws everyday so maybe it’s just the fact that they don’t know the law. I am guilty of speeding or California stopping at stop signs in front of cops cause I know they won’t bother pulling me over. Using my phone – yeah, they don’t care.

How can we catch them when we cannot pursue??????.

this is what is going to continue to happen if Police dont do something to stop these people speeding down the road as fast as they want swerving in and out of lanes pretending they are Nascar drivers. When they wreck, it doesnt just hurt them, it hurts people in the cars they hit as well!

If people knew how to drive on this island then there would be no need to swerve in and out. Why don’t you people know that slow traffic should keep left thereby if you’re scared of going above 25 mph in a 40mph zone competent drivers can safely pass.

The driving here has become more and more like that in Jamaica. Selfish stupid driving. Going no where fast. Constant tailgating. Never any police in sight.

This was absolutely brutal. Ended up stopping off at the beach and relaxed.

Now do we all understand why there needs to be an alternate route available between WB & GT in the vicinity of the Kimpton Hotel??????? What if this accident had occurred on that stretch of the ETH?

    • Jotnar says:

What if it had occurred before the ETH extension was built? Would have been even worse as 2 fewer lanes to work with.

      • Anonymous says:

That is the exact point. We knew what we had and the problems a single route created. It had happened before. Hence the cry to have a second, better, route while retaining an alternative.

The Police roadblock did not seem to deter the unmuffled, unlicensed, and uninsured “345” dirt biker at cost u less roundabout. It seemed to be very easy to circumvent the southbound blockade – yards from the deaf officer on duty, cut over to WB Rd, double back via Sunshine Suites, across the Esterley Tibbetts median and race up to Crystal Harbour doing wheelies. In full view of the dumbfounded law-abiding traffic being rerouted. He’s back up there again today. It is hard to believe that the RCIPS have any interest in catching these rogues when they so easily turn a blind eye and deaf ear to their movements.
