CIG extends benefit increase to retired public servants

(CNS): The Cayman Islands Government has confirmed that the recent increase in government benefits has been extended to include ex-gratia payments to eligible public service pensioners, who will now receive $1,500 per month, up from $1,250. The increase will be processed for qualifying pensioners as part of the March payroll and retroactively for January and February.

Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly said the high cost of living had significantly eroded the value of welfare benefits, making it necessary to adjust support for vulnerable people.

She said that Cabinet had approved this as part of its “broader commitment to strengthening the welfare safety net and assisting those most in need. This decision will bring much needed relief for pensioners allowing them to better cope with affording their necessities.”

Deputy Governor Franz Manderson said the money is paid to pensioners who faithfully served the government and people of the islands for many years, and undoubtedly deserve the raise. “We owe a debt of gratitude to our pensioners who laid the foundation for our civil service and the growth and development of the Cayman Islands,” he said.

The ex-gratia uplift supports the government’s goal to create parity between long-term financial assistance and the minimum amounts paid to public sector pensioners. Currently, there are 633 people who will qualify for the increase. Overall, this will add another CI$1.9 million to the budget.

9.51..we’ll have the same bunch of parasites, if PPM form the next government it seems.
As much as I like Roy McT.. I can’t stomach another 4 years of Kenneth, Juju and dumbdum all controlled by Mac with Saunders pulling strings in the background.

Roy McTaggart stood up in front of the country during the PAC and directly stated that he, as the minister of finance at the time, had no clue how many tens of millions in concessions and waivers he and the PPM gave away to foreign developers. This is a 100% factual statement; they literally did not keep track of what they gave away, and therefore were unable to determine either the short- or long-term effects of said concessions. As many of us do, you might have fond memories of the McTaggarts as a whole, but don’t let that blind you from what is right in front of your face: Roy fits right in with the rest of the PPM at the bottom of the barrel.

Most were contracted officers, who got annual Lump Sum payments instead of pensions.
    Then they got Status.
Now they are demanding Pensions also!!

I don’t think so 5:33. The people you speak of are in a separate category and many are as you suggest complaining totally without justification that they need pensions too. They are expats who collected gratuities and then later Contracted Officers Supplement in lieu of pensions but a few are now ( outrageously) trying to suggest they were cheated out of pensions. The ones referred to in the article are people who did not in the past receive proper benefits of any kind at all time when our employment laws in Cayman were disgracefully unfair to certain people. At least I THINK this is what this is all about. Can anyone confirm this? Public Service Pensions Board…hello?

Asking for a reply from the Public Service Pensions Board is a waste of time I’m afraid. They never reply to anything.

In response to 5:33, I took early retirement as a permanent and pensionable employee. I am one of the ex-gratia pensioners who who will be uplifted from $1250 to $1500. I am 66yrs old. However the sad thing is I am not covered by Cinico insurance. Reason being I resigned on my own from Govt . In order for me to be covered by Cinico I would have to be retired in service which means upon retiring from Govt I would still carry on my Cinico Covetage. I was of the opinion that every pensioner whether resigned or retired should be automatically covered by Cinico. So it’s a catch. Now for me to get Cinico I have to take the Basic Plan costing around $250 monthly. I sincerely hope a New Govt would look into this.

They can’t refuse you medical care at the George Town Hospital. You don’t need CINICO.

In response to 5/3/25 @9.59am, please tell me how to get Cinico Coverage then. You stated I don’t need Cinico, yes but I will be billed. New Govt please put this as a priority that ALL GOVT Pensioners (whether by resignation/retirement) to be automatically covered by Cinico. We all will have health issues that requires us to attend the hospital.

You keep dragging out this old saw. NO, they can’t refuse you medical treatment. YES, they will make you legally responsible for the cost. ALL the cost. We ALL need some form of health care. FINALLY get it now?

  5. Pensioner says:

Much appreciated and thanks to Ms Julie and her Cabinet. Thanks to the DG for his recognition and appreciation of us pensioners who all worked hard and very much deserving of the increase ex-gratia payments. With the present high Cost of Living it will surely help us all.
