156 crashes recorded during two-week safety campaign

Police stop during Operation Clyro

(CNS): The RCIPS wrapped up the 15-day road safety campaign, Operation Clyro, on Monday, during which traffic officers responded to a whopping 156 collisions. Tickets were issued to 422 drivers with unlicensed vehicles and 278 for speeding, including 15 drivers of heavy equipment vehicles. Another 34 tickets were given to people using a mobile phone while driving, and 13 for driving without being qualified. Another 18 people were arrested for DUI.

The number of recorded crashes during this campaign was higher than usual. According to the Head of Traffic and Road Policing Inspector Andre Tahal, his officers respond to around 60 road collisions per week. During this campaign, the average was 78.

“The poor driving behaviour occurring every day on our roadways is not only irresponsible but self-centred and demonstrates lack of consideration for others when drivers,” he said at the start of the campaign.

Police said several different approaches were taken to encourage road safety and target poor driving behaviour. An increase in enforcement capability enabled the police to conduct regular and spontaneous vehicle check points across the islands, usually at peak times, targeting certain offences such as distracted driving and mobile phone use. DUI checks were done in the evenings and heavily on weekends when the likelihood of drunk driving is at its highest.

Speeding and vehicle safety checks for roadworthiness were run during the days. Trucks and other heavy equipment were also targeted, specifically regarding unsafe loads, speeding and dangerous driving. The police also ran a targeted media campaign alongside the high visibility on the roads.

The RCIPS thanked everyone who supported police efforts during Operation Clyro, especially the members of the public who provided information on areas of concern, and encouraged all road users to drive with courtesy and act with integrity.

No real meaningful statistics from the RCIPS. They keep saying speed is the cause of all these accidents. Then why aren’t these cars totaled for traveling and crashing at excessive speed and why aren’t there more fatalities? The real cause of all these accidents, is the lack of experience and good driving skills. If the RCIPS were to class accidents by nationality and how long these people have been driving in Cayman, you will clearly understand what the true issue is here.

    • Anonymous says:

It is highly unlikely that speed is a factor in even a significant number of crashes. In the UK where accident statistics are properly recorded and published, and speeds outside of built up areas far exceed ours, speeding accounts for just 7% of all RTA’s. The cause of our excessive RTA rate here is incompetent driving. Half the people on our roads have never taken a real driving test. Many of them are not safe to drive at any speed.

The public transportation system or lack there of is a straight up joke. The public buses are always breaking the traffic rules and speeding which doesn’t send a good message to everyone else.

422 unlicensed vehicles? We need to know the total number of vehicles stopped so we can estimate the real extent of unlicensed—and therefore uninsured—drivers on our roads.

This is a serious issue that demands immediate action. Unlicensed drivers are likely the leading cause of dangerous driving and accidents, and the rest of us are left paying exorbitant insurance premiums as a result.

It is the government’s duty to enforce the law and ensure that only properly licensed and insured drivers are on the road. Their failure to do so is unacceptable. If they can’t manage this, they should be compelled to create an insurance fund to compensate anyone injured or whose property is damaged by uninsured drivers. This problem cannot be ignored any longer.

      422 unlicensed vehicles…..

How is that possible with the digital licensing system in place?

      Were the 422 vehicles insured?

How is that possible with the digital licensing system in place?

      Zero enforcement.

When will these stupid campaigns end? It is your JOB 24/7 to enforce traffic laws. Why is it there are no cops setting up speed traps on the bypasses? They are going 90mph on Linford P every morning until the traffic backs up.

Another idea, set up a cop to check license plates and insurance of all the jerks who are stopping the flow of traffic by cutting the line and entering the road to the Red Bay round about on the opposite direction entrance. Another spot is Tim Hortons, cars are cutting from shamrock road through the parking lot to get to the bypass and cause those waiting to enter the round about a longer wait. Start doing something about those people who think they are the only persons who matter.

Partly correct. No need to get rid of the round abouts. They need to use traffic light on the round abouts at peak hours so that heavy traffic gets the right of way. Similar to England.

Roundabouts are FAR safer and far more efficient than traffic lights. Some roundabouts could improve their efficiency with traffic lights at peak times but otherwise the roundabout is better in every way. If you think the roundabout is the problem, I strongly suspect you are the problem.

if you want to reduce the number of untaxed/licensed cars let drivers tax them until the inspection is due. Not letting drivers pay for the license when the inspection isn’t even due is inane.

No later than today a truck engaged without stopping in a roundabout at full speed and a car in the neighboring lane of the truck engaged exactly the same way forcing me to a dead stop while indicating my exit from the roundabout. I would guess both truck’s driver and car driver went together through the same driver’s ed !

This is just one of the latest examples of bad driving on the island . And then people wonder why I installed cameras that record and provide frontal and backward recording in every car we own ! They record in full view video and with a high storage capacity the footage is there for over a month!

While they keep giving out licenses to people who simply can’t drive nothing will ever change. We need to stop accepting Philipino, Indian and Jamaican licenses and introduce a real driving test like the UK’s. Until then, forget it.

So now the road campaign ends. Do they really think that anything will change? The results from the 15 day purge are just the tip of the iceberg. If the Police really want to make a difference they have to change behaviour through consistent enforcement of laws pertaining to the road. This also included looking at their own inept drivers who never indicate at roundabouts.

    So during my 15 minute drive home from happy hour at 8pm this evening I witnessed;

1 beat up Hyundai with no headlights
1 crappy truck with a busted taillight
1 hero overtaking on Crewe Road doing at least 60mph
1 pos car illegally abandoned in a bike lane at the end of the runway
1 Honda Shit with no rear plate
7 vehicles not coming to a complete stop at stop signs
3 police vehicles ignoring all these and likely countless other infractions

I did wave at the nice officers policing the 18 people who were are the circus cause I’m polite like that.

156 accidents in 15 days on 76 square miles with most speed limits in the 25-40 mph range… ridiculous.

422 drivers with unlicensed vehicles… just incredible.
For the majority of us who pay and get our vehicles inspected and licensed in timely fashion this really infuriates me to read this.
And if the vehicles aren’t licenesed, they probably haven’t been inspected either… and could be unsafe.
IMHO if someone is driving a vehicle that is unlicensed they shouldn’t just be ticketed… the vehicle should be impounded and the owner charged a significant amount to get it back… or even sold at police auction.

This isn’t true. The inspection period is 14m and licence inexplicably just 12. Of course you can’t license if you need inspection within 3 months. When you do get it inspected and licensed you then pay the prorated license to get you back to the stupid situation where you’re 12 and 14 again. The rules are idiotic. My vehicles are always insured, always inspected but every year there’s always a month or 2 when they’re not licensed. Change the stupid system. Either align them both, or let drivers buy the license so long as it has a valid inspection.

    Highlights this week:
A tour Coaster bus, grey one, driving around like a crab, as it’s so bent.

Overhanging load in the back of a pickup, luckily it was secured manually by a guy sat in the bed.

Crossing from Lions Centre to the Baptist church last night, with police officers assisting, yet watching multiple cars fly by at 50mph+ in a 30 zone.

A Dodge Ram truck getting fed up of traffic and doing a U-Turn on LPH, driving over the central reservation.

There were many others, too. Ah, Cayman roads.

I don’t understand why we don’t have a towing and impound program, why are cars left for days on the side of the road. You have a 3rd party contracted by CIG to remove and store these vehicles until the fines/towing charges are paid.

Where are we with the RFID license plate technology. In other jurisdictions the police cars are equipped with RFID readers that pick up expired tags, no insurance, outstanding tickets, warrants etc.
The police just drive through parking lots reading tags.

Set an example RCIPS – every day, every RCIPS vehicle. Seat belt use, indicators, driving in left lanes, overtaking on the right, correct roundabout lane use with indicators, no phone use, etc.
Changing driving habits is a gradual process, so exhibiting proper road use and enforcing the law will gradually help.

Stop the drunk drivers starting their vehicles before they hit the roads.
I guarantee you after a period of doing this people drinking will think twice about even getting into their vehicles leaving bars being paranoid.
It worked great in Ireland and really cut down on the problem in my town where as you could imagine drunk driving was prevalent .

This sort of solution is a complete nonstarter. Ask yourself, how many police officers are needed for this effort? There are hundreds of busy establishments open every day from dusk till dawn. Then ask yourself, of these hundreds of reported incidents only a handful are related to drink driving.

It’s so embarrassing and such a disgrace what our road drivers now look like, totally different from when my parents were growing up. But at the same time, how can we expect road drivers to follow the rules, when half of the RCIPS can’t follow basic road rules? They don’t indicate when merging, some have on no seatbelts, driving above speed limit, talking on the phone…
