(CNS): With Cayman now under an official hurricane warning, Cayman Airways will operate additional evacuation flights to help evacuate visitors and residents who wish to leave before Hurricane Beryl arrives. CAL will run two flights to Miami on Tuesday night and five more on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, the Cayman Islands Airport Authority confirmed in a social media post that operations at all airports will cease tomorrow evening. Flights will stop on Wednesday at 6:00pm at the Owen Roberts International Airport and at 3:00pm at the Charles Kirkconnell International Airport on Cayman Brac.

CIAA officials said they expected to resume airport operations once the ‘all clear’ for the Cayman Islands has been given on Hurricane Beryl.

The Department of Tourism has said that most airlines flying into ORIA will waive change fees for passengers travelling between 1 July and 4 or 5 July who have had to cancel or alter their travel plans due to Beryl. However, travellers are urged to contact their airlines directly.

Cayman Airways is not necessarily altruistic. They wanted to get the plans out of the way of potential damage from the hurricane. Safe and sound in Miami.

Thanks to ticket agent manager Michelle, Cayman airways for helping 4 of us obtain our ID tickets. Dedicated manager and awesome person. Customer service.. *****.

Except not every one wanted to go Miami!

If only Miami was one of the busiest international hubs in the entire world, and you could go just about anywhere from there.

What we really needed was extra flights to Jamaica as they’re the majority on island and Caymanians need the shelter spaces.

The storm hit Jamaica significantly worse than it hit Cayman, and it was occurring at the same time we were evacuating. For us to evacuate to Jamaica, we would have been sending our planes directly into the storm. Any flights to Jamaica would likely have had more people trying to get tickets back to Cayman than we were sending out. Miami was the correct choice in this instance.

We are visiting from the U.K. and British Airways was asking US $1700 for an economy ticket to London on today’s flight – our national airline is a greedy disgrace!

Thanks very much CAL, for putting on so many extra flights. I hope everyone is grateful for this heroic effort. Keep safe, everyone.

I hope those of you yelling foolishness about selling off CAL now understand the value of our national flag carrier. CAL provides an absolutely essential service to our islands at all times, but especially during times like this, and during the aftermath of major storms etc. Just look at how many flights they added to help get people to safety. They even waived changes fees and didn’t raise prices, all while other airlines are long gone from the island. Bet that $300 to Miami sounds a lot better than the $7000 per person private jet seats people were posting on socials.

I will never vote for anyone that even hints at selling off CAL, whether it is ever profitable or not. There is much more dead weight we can (and should) cut before that is ever a consideration.

      Except they sold out instantly.

Ministers and politicians had to get their family members off to Miami.

We don’t need a national airline for politicians to charter a handful of evacuation flights once every 20 years. The hundreds of millions extra that we pay on the basis of this social subsidy, is the opposite of a value proposition.
