Cayman Airways B737-8 at ORIA

(CNS): Cayman Airways has revised its schedule for today, Thursday 30 May, as one of its jet aircraft has been temporarily removed from service due to unscheduled maintenance while another aircraft has been undergoing scheduled three-yearly heavy maintenance, resulting in two of the airline’s four B737-8 aircraft being temporarily out of service.

According to a release from the airline, the aircraft in heavy maintenance is scheduled to return to service later today, which will enable CAL to resume its regular schedule. As a result, the current irregular operations, including the need for any contracted airline services, is expected to diminish starting Friday, 31 May, as the airline returns to normal operations.

The airline’s reservations team is actively working directly with affected customers to best accommodate their travel needs. Cayman Airways sincerely apologises for any inconveniences caused.

Why is Cayman Airways always being bashed by the public when there is a delay or change in flight operations. This happens everyday and with every airline.

I am a frequent flyer due to my nature of work and I have flown many airlines all over the world and I have to say Cayman should be proud to have an airline that is so diligent in providing information and having staff that you can actually communicate with when situations such as these happen. Most airlines simply send you an automated message and that’s it..most times, it just says your flight is delayed or cancelled without explaining any reason…basically saying, sort it out yourself and suck it up buttercup.

I was once stuck in a small town in Louisiana when the airline I was travelling with cancelled their flight due to bad weather and the next flight was not until 2 days later. I had meetings in Dallas Texas the next afternoon and I had no choice but to rent a car and drive one way to make my appointment. The reason I say this is that I have never seen an airline like Cayman Airways who would come to the rescue of stranded passengers by operating extra flights or delaying their flight to a later time to assure passengers get to their destination. For the Airline, I was travelling on they basically said our flight is cancelled and they have re-booked you on the next flight 2 days later. To be very honest after driving that length of time, I would have preferred a long delay until the weather lifted than driving in terrible weather for over 6 hours. I think most passengers would be honest, after the fact, in these situations to say that even though they were delayed, they were happy in the end to get to their destination.

Airline fly airplanes, they are machines, like any other machine they break down from time to time, they need to be maintained, sometimes this is scheduled and other times it is unscheduled. No airline wants to cancel their flights or inconvenience their passengers, what good does that do for them? Safety should always be the highest priority and I have seen time and time again where Cayman Airways has erred on the side of safety even in the face of negative press and bashing by passengers who have been inconvenienced. I have been angry many times as well, but I guess because I fly so much that I have learned that they have made this decision for my safety and my fellow passengers.

Anyways, as a frequent flyer across the world, I just wanted everyone to know that this happens every day all over the world and the best thing to do when it happens is not to rush to find the nearest social media to post negative comments but work with your airline and look at your options. Channel all of your energy towards finding solutions, while the others are screaming and shouting at the airline staff or posting negative comments on social media, you can be researching your options and well on your way to your destination.

CAL advised us a day before they were delaying the flight for 5+ hours. They did it twice, on Monday and Thursday. I lost the connecting flight both days and CAL does not want to compensate for the fees I had to pay to change the other flights. They only paid for the hotel in Panama for one night.

So, will those of us traveling on KX106 last Thursday who were delayed by 6+ hours and lost half a day of travel – be refunded even a portion of our ticket money? Or, we get what the duck get?

Did you ask anyone at CAL? There are laws that dictate what they must provide to you, but they’re certainly not going to seek you out to compensate you. You should have discussed this with them at the time that it happened, but I would certainly suggest you contact them directly if you haven’t already.

If there are laws that dictate what should be done – why shouldn’t they seek me out as the customer? Especially being that they already have every passenger’s contact details. It really isn’t that difficult.

I mean, sure, feel how you gotta feel about it, but the fact is if you dont get off your ass and ask them for compensation, you won’t get it. Just like with the vast majority of organizations on the planet. If you want changes made to laws, policies, and procedures then you need to speak to your MPs; there is an election coming up, after all.

Or you can just sit around bitching on the internet all day. I hear that always works. 👍

Governments should not own, never mind operate airlines. The only other countries that 100% own an airline are Russia, Cuba, UAE and North Korea. Nice company you keep CAL!

Absolutely incorrect foolishness. Please stop talking about things you clearly know nothing about. You could have done literally 10 seconds of research and known this was false.

There some ropy countries on the 100% list. It would be interesting to see how much their governments have to subsidize to keep them aloft.

Don’t kid yourself. Canada was in that game for generations, British Airways wasn’t privatised until 1987. and government stakes in all airlines grew significantly during COVID, including via USA bailouts. Gov’t of Cda acquired another 6.5% of AC stock during that upheaval. If you follow the sector, you’ll see Airlines are similar to public utilities and regularly receive cash from Federal gov’ts – often with no strings.

Every quantifiable attribute, save the number of available aircraft and destinations.

Or the price, inflight entertainment and wifi, frequent flyer scheme, connecting flights without a massive price hike because of cross service….

but just looking at available aircraft, if AA have one go technical, they replace it with another. CAL has one go technical and the entire schedule goes down the toilet. For days.

Unscheduled heavy maintenance on young aircraft does not inspire confidence.

Reread the article. The heavy maintenance is scheduled triennial maintenance.

Well the unscheduled maintenance is still very much heavy maintenance, seeing as they’ll be grounded until they get CIW’s engine fixed. Prognosis: not looking good.

Unscheduled maintenance means something broken or a problem with our new planes. The travelling public deserves more of any explanation than Thursday schedule changed.

Not sure why you’re downvoted when you’re correct. VPCIW had a major engine incident, and they don’t know when they’re gonna find a fix.

No information at all about which part of this very expensive and crash prone plane was the latest to fall off of it. Wouldn’t have anything to do with a loose jump door, would it? At least this is coming from a private company, it’s not like this is a national airline that we all pay for or anything …. Oh – wait a minute …..
