Acting Chief Fire Officer Brevon Elliot

(CNS): The home affairs ministry has confirmed that Brevon Elliot, who was promoted just this month to deputy chief fire officer for aviation, will take over as the acting chief fire officer from Witney Tatum, as the search for a new CFO on a one-year contract continues. Elliot is the first of the new senior management team to be appointed to act in the top job, but the ministry has said it will provide the same opportunity to other members of the team until the recruitment exercise for the interim chief is completed.

As a result of Elliot’s move upwards, Station Officer Gilbert Rankin has been appointed to act in the role of deputy chief fire officer for aviation, while Tatum will be returning to his substantive post at the Cayman Brac Fire Station after five weeks as acting CFO.

Ministry leaders said that plan is still to hire an interim CFO, who is likely to be recruited from overseas, for just one year. But during that 12-month contract a recruitment exercise will be carried out for the substantive role, with the aim of finding a local fire officer for the top fire job, after the controversies surrounding the appointment of David Hails as the first ever non-Caymanian CFO in recent history.

“A variety of training opportunities will continue to be offered to fire officers as part of the ministry’s ongoing mission to foster an internal culture of leadership development within the service,” officials said in a release.

Offering each of the new deputy CFOs the opportunity to serve as the chief fire officer is part of the succession planning, allowing them to gain valuable leadership skills and experience, the ministry stated.

G morning my caymanian fire guys are always there to give a helping hand and what ever they has to do to help you out keep it up my fire guys god bless you always

Why is having a non-Caymanian as CFO controversial? Surely the best person for the job should get it no matter WHERE they come from? Is it their fault that there has been zero succession planning?

  3. Cess Pita says:

They may as well toss a coin for the top job, at least that way influence will not play a part. My preference is the slimmest guy gets it.

Great news. Congrats Brevon. My advice is to work hard to show your officers that you rise above the hate and mistrust.

And always remember the people who got you that position. You will some day have to contribute to the pyramid scheme and also hire another candidate that is a friend of ours but for whom their are hundreds of more qualified people.

A pyramid scheme of faked competency captures the status quo quite right.

Oh please. Just look at the revelations this week of the non merit based university entrance fraud in the great white north. I wonder how many professionals around here and leading lights really and truly earned their spot?

Women like firemen because they are in uniform. They usually means they have to undergo stringent regular physical exercises that keep their body in shape.

An overweight fireman is a complete disappointment plus a hazard to whom ever they have to save when they arrive at a house fire.
