Police officer sues security firm over dog bite
(CNS): A police officer who was dispatched to the Fairbanks Immigration Detention Centre in May 2014 when a group of Cubans was trying to escape is suing The Security Centre because one of its dogs bit her while on duty. In a statement of claim that describes a chaotic situation, as police, prison and immigration officers and TSC staff attempted to control rioting migrants, the 49-year-old female officer said a K9 dog bit her on the arm because the security officer was not in control of his animal.
In a lawsuit filed in the Grand Court last week, the police officer said that the K9 security guard walked passed her as she was standing guard by one of the potential escape routes when she suddenly felt the pain of the bite and turned to see the dog. The security officer acted “as though nothing had happened”, she said, even after she had told him that the dog “just bit me”, before she went looking for a first aid kit.
The woman was taken to hospital and treated for the bite and later for an infection. She is now claiming damages because the officer did nothing to restrain or control the dog to stop it biting her, the suit states.
The riot came at a time when frustrations were running high at the centre due to long delays in repatriation.

Yes the company is to blame for any incident that may occur. Since there is no certification within the island for most k9s in general (which government should enforce) anybody and any dog can be apart of the team. Can you imagine that you can place a dog on your unit that does not get tested or inspected for the job they have. It is worrying that these dogs and handlers are being placed out at Bayshore and other areas with high foot traffic. The reason why no one has gotten bit there is because the handlers find a corner, hold the leash close and stand there for a few hours. Also, most individuals try to stay clear of the dog as they are usually already barking.
The Security Centre K 9 Unit are like their CCTV cameras around Grand Cayman.
You can’t have someone being a janitor one week – and then the following week, are qualified as a K9 officer.
Please don’t blame the dog though, he/she is smarter than the handler and the company put together.
Wonder if they will state the security guard’s name and if he is still on Island???
She is rightfully doing so.
I cry for you, Cayman! How did you become so incompetent? It seems like nobody knows what they are doing. From RCIPS to car mechanics, from a doctor to a court clerk, from a security guard to immigration, from installing a road sign, to the airport parking; from expanding a road to a roadblocks. A truly depressing picture.
10:44. Is that why you are leaving? Oh wait no one wants to leave because we are paradise.
CNS Grammar: More than one Cuban = were (plural) trying to escape
CNS: Several Cubans were trying to escape. The group (singular) was trying to escape.
Go with British or American usage consistently and avoid the grammar trolls (maybe)
Ha! I thought the same thing. Sounds awkward. Could have been amended to not have to use a word that sounds wrong. At least that’s what I always do.
That is what happens when proper bids don’t go out for the proper company. Remember government contracts were going out to The Security Ctr without any bids, including Fairbanks, New Glass House, Immigration to name a few….goes to show you their guards nor their k9’s are not properly trained
10:29. Really where did you get that info? Oh wait it’s what’s someone told someone who heard it from someone.
3:50pm….no its not what someone told someone, get your facts…Immigration and New Glass House NEVER WENT TO BID, neither did FAIRBANKS when this incident happen!!
And what is done about it? Absolutely nothing……
