Cops issue more warnings over latest email scams

(CNS): The RCIPS Financial Crimes Unit has issued another public warning regarding the emergence of more phishing scam emails that appear to be circulating among local email accounts. While most internet users are now very familiar with how to detect what is a real email and what isn’t, there are still many people who are sucked into online scams, especially when they are purporting to be from genuine companies, such as local telecom providers.

The RCIPS said the financial cops received information Wednesday morning about three new scams attempting to fraudulently solicit information from email users. Police said these emails, one of which is masquerading as correspondence from Flow, try to direct the people receiving them to a link to confirm receipt of a purchase order, complete a pending transaction, or increase the storage size of their email account.

One thing to look out for is where the sender is not the same as the “reply-to” address — one of many clues on the emails that they are scams.

“These emails are fraudulent and members of the public should not open any of the attachments or click on any of the hyperlinks, as these could launch viruses or ransomware in the recipient’s computers or devices,” the financial crimes unit added.

I tell all my clients, get yourself a Gmail account and stop using your FLOW account. Phase out the FLOW account over a period of a few months and then request it to be “disconnected” or just stop using it altogether.
