CUC says oil leak led to outage
(CNS): Offering further explanation for the power outage Tuesday, CUC have said that interruption to service followed an emergency stop of one of their larger generating units by staff for a oil leak. “The sudden loss in generation caused the load-shedding of four feeders serving the various affected districts,” Grand Cayman’s power company said. The outage affected customers in parts of East End, Bodden Town, George Town and West Bay, who experienced interruptions to their electricity service between 7:11pm and 8:41pm.
“Following the start-up of additional generation, restoration of service to customers in a majority of the affected areas began at 7:35pm although customers in West Bay were not fully restored until 8:41pm,” CUC said. “The delay in restoring service to customers in West Bay was due to a communication systems failure with the circuit breaker in the Hydesville Substation on Willie Farrington Drive, which required field crews to visit the substation to reset and close the breaker.”
Approximately 4,500 of the CUC’s 28,000 customers were affected, the power company noted.
“CUC apologises for the inconvenience the outage may have caused,” a spokesperson said.
