(CNS): The acting president of the region’s football body has been arrested in a dawn raid in Zürich in the latest round of arrests in the growing FIFA scandal. CONCACAF’s acting president, Alfredo Hawit, who replaced Cayman’s Jeffrey Webb after his arrest in Switzerland in May, was netted on behalf of the FBI at a Swiss hotel. Swiss authorities confirmed that he was arrested on behalf of the US justice department and is currently in custody in Zürich having indicated his intention to fight extradition.

Alongside Hawit, who is from Honduras, Juan Angel Napout, a Paraguayan citizen who is president of the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) and FIFA official, has also been arrested.

Both men face corruption and racketeering charges and further arrests are also expected. Loretta Lynch was scheduled to give a news conference on Thursday revealing the latest indictment in the FIFA probe.

CONCACAF issued a statement Thursday morning stating that it was cooperating with “all government authorities in their investigations to the fullest extent” and was committed to implementing the reform framework that it announced in July.

“Today’s developments only strengthen the Confederation’s resolve in continuing to enact significant structural and governance changes to the organization, including substantial amendments to its statutes and fundamentally changing how it conducts business,” a spokesperson stated.

More details on who else has been charged as well as the allegations are expected to be revealed later today.

Meanwhile, Jeffrey Webb remains under house arrest in the United States awaiting his next court appearance. Webb is also facing fraud charges here in Cayman in the CarePay case in which his friend and business partner, Canover Watson, is currently on trial.

They stole from the Haitian relief fund. Jeffery Webb stole from the Haitian relief fund. He should burn in hell for that.

They also stole from our local children, see extract from the indictment:

      Embezzlement and Misappropriation
      117. The conspirators’ corruption of the enterprise
extended beyond the payment and receipt of bribes and kickbacks.
FIFA’s provision of money – which totaled in the hundreds of
millions of dollars – to its member associations in connection
with the Goal Program, Financial Assistance Program (FAP), and
other programs created opportunities for officials to embezzle
or otherwise fraudulently appropriate funding intended to
benefit FIFA’s member associations and their constituent
organizations, including youth leagues. Certain of the
defendants and their co-conspirators, including the defendant
JACK WARNER and Jeffrey Webb, took advantage of these
opportunities and embezzled or otherwise personally appropriated
funds provided by FIFA, including funds intended for natural
      disaster relief

I wonder if any investigation will be done in Maples grassroot football programme given fact that Bruce Blake, former and longterm employee of Maples, was involved in CIFA and at Maples same time this programme started. Things that make you go hmmm here’s another dot we can connect, let’s check it out

So FIFA is run by some old white guys from Europe but they charge two black guys from the Caribbean and a bunch of Latinos

The donkeys carry the heavy load, while the Europeans flip the notes at the counting station. Clean hands.

I´m just glad to see a Jamaican is not involved this time. My ppl breathe a sigh of relief……for now!

        Webb and Watson not Jamaican…?
        Give me a break.!!!

      • Anonymous says:

Sorry Webb has deep Jamaican roots and Bruce Blake’s parents are both from Jamaica… and if we tie in Watson, his parents are also from Jamaica, although not accused of anything Mark Scotland the Minister at time, his father or grandfather is from Jamaica. Be proud, most young leaders messing up have that connection.

I’m sure Loretta Lynch consulted with Obama on the decision to charge the FIFA reps based on their skin colour and it had nothing to do with them being despicable criminal scum. We really need to keep the focus on what they look like and ignore what they have done.

Corruption is a way of life for sporting organizations worldwide, that’s just how they do business. I dare Loretta Lynch to investigate the NFL.

Libran?? Seriously? The least appropriate name for a serious touch of racism. If you have info that shows the European “whites” are corrupt, please share it with the US authorities. If you don’t stop making spurious and unfounded allegations-or are you just trying to stir racial tensions?

    • Anonymous says:

Your victim mentality ignores the fact the European football authorities wanted to kick out Blatter and his cronies for many years but it was Africa, Caribbean, South American and Asian votes that kept them in power and it appears that the reason was that the corruption issues would never be properly investigated. Remember CIFA and many like them were Blatter-voting junket-junkies. It was the “black guys” and “latinos”, to use your crude phrases, that propped up the web of corruption.

Dangerous job being President of CONCACAF? Jack Warner, Jeff Webb and now Alfredo Hawit all charged with the same crime! After each one replaced the other and promised to clean up? The arrogance of these people, arrested a the same opulent hotel as the previous arrest. More to come!!!

    • Anonymous says:

Generally if you know there is a lot to clean up that might involve you you tend to appoint someone else with dirty hands to do the tidying up.

Lord, send the last dishonest, big-hearted culprit to jail for a longgggg time. The deceptive money grabbers, trying to get bigger and better than the other. How much will they spend in jail?

A hotel at $4000 per nite Each. Plus food. Booze. Limos. Etc.
Paid for by Haitian food money.
      All need to go down.

What we need is for JW to sign in regards to the local association CIFA, We need to know where the funding for the local football has gone. I understand that CFU has invited local players for tryouts in St. Kiits for MLS scouts, however, CIFA is NOT able to assist with the travelling cost for the players, so the boys are not able to travel.
One night for the hotel in Switzerland would have paid for at least three boys travelling. I know this is not CIFA but I also know CIFA members have enjoyed these “benefits” without much complain.

        Disband CIFA Now

      • Anonymous says:

Quite correct 1:37. Questions also need to be asked about who benefitted from the pitch revamps in 2007/8 when they were upgraded to ‘FIFA’ international standards under Jeff’s leadership. The new facilities are pretty impressive but did we really need to spend all that money in one go and who profited from the work?

    • Anonymous says:

Hope it can be seized, for the manipulation of funds from the country.

Jeff will now be leaving his nice home and going to prison. This will not be fun for a guy who lived like Jeff.
