Three people seen depositing a white powder, now thought to be sugar, along Elgin Avenue, North Sound Road and central George Town, Grand Cayman

(CNS): A group of runners triggered a security alert in George Town on Thursday after they marked their run route with what was most probably sugar. The police, the Department of Environmental Health and the Cayman Islands Fire Service were all involved after reports were made to the authorities about ‘suspicious activity’ in the capital involving people throwing a white powder on the road.

But after tests on the powder showed it was harmless, police now believe that the three people caught on camera, dressed in running clothes, were Hash Club members marking out a course. Police have not yet been able to confirm that they were part of the international and worldwide running club but it certainly seems likely as labs tests have confirmed that the powder was some form of glucose.

Following the report to police and the submission of images from the public of three people walking through George Town depositing a white powdery substance on the sidewalks and on the road, police had put out an alert to find the group and also enlisted the help of government agencies to test the ‘powder’.

Following lab confirmation that it was “some sort of powdery confectioner sugar with corn or glucose syrup base”, a spokesperson for the RCIPS said that they were still trying to contact the people involved to “resolve the matter”.

“This just in…a group of crackheads were seen following the white trail of a suspicious substance that legit runners had dropped repeatedly on their run. Motives of the runners in question are undetermined at this time. The RCIPS is investigating”

  2. C. Evans says:

What I cannot understand is why these people would think it OK to enter a foreign (to them) country and wander around committing suspicious behaviour without first contacting the authorities. The fact of the matter is that there is now a heightened sense of security everywhere – their attitude of assuming they could behave like this is arrogant and stupid. Can you imagine the reaction if a few members of Cayman Hash Harriers wondered around Washington scattering white powder on the road and sidewalk?

  3. Anonymous says:

lol….this is too funny! And to think, the Royal Cayman Islands Police had to pay the Security Centre to get the photograph of these “runners dispensing their sugar. Well, I tell you what boy, it was worth it me and my woman are laughing our assess off. Worth of every cent of our tax payer cent we contributed….East end cocaine protest..lol

  4. Anonymous says:

I like the idea of a running club setting out coke at points along the journey. I would join that club. Although the runs might get a little too moreish.

  5. blah blah blah says:

Who runs around leaving trails of sugar behind? I don’t blame the police for investigating – if they had not done so, and something would have come of this, everyone and their dogs would have cried foul that the police didn’t look into it. I’m no fan of the RCIPS, but the fault lies with these idiots who think that sprinkling powdery substances behind themselves is somehow fascinating. If you’re a running club, run – if you’re a baking club, bake. Idiots!

    • Anonymous says:

So instead you imagine that someone is walking around with a leaky bad of coke? Give me a break.

      • blah blah blah says:

Ummh, no, I don’t imagine anything like that. I didn’t say anything about coke. Did you see me mention coke anywhere? All I said is that the matter had to be looked into. Comprende amigo? Anthrax, ricin, asbestos, etc. are all white substances… And they’re all deadly. Nothing wrong with taking a quick look at what the morons were playing with – because if the RCIPS had not looked into it and something would have happened, the public would have screamed bloody murder. Right? Get it? The next article would have been about the police doing nothing when right in front of their eyes these morons were spreading anthrax… Do I need to spell it out further, or do you get the gist?? Now go play nice with your dolls.

    • Anonymous says:

That is what coke dealers do, leave their valuable supply lying around. Do you think they were going for the world record for the longest ever line? Idiot right back at you.

      • blah blah blah says:

Let me say it real slowly for you so that you can understand… I did not mention coke anywhere in my previous comment. The substance could have been anthrax, ricin, asbestos, etc… Do you understand the point now? I doubt it. Now start counting your fingers as fast as you can and call me tomorrow when you get to three.

        • Anonymous says:

Yes, the point is you are still mental.

          • blah blah blah says:

Actually, the point is that you are utterly and shamelessly clueless as to the true level of your ignorance. You were the moron to mention coke, not me… When losing an argument it may be best to just shut it. Obviously you haven’t learned that lesson yet.

      • Anonymous says:

“Right back at you?” Really? I thought that line was reserved for morons in B rated movies

  6. Anonymous says:

    Like, seriously!!???

  7. caymanaindonkey says:

Yep, I’m just going to walk down the road marking my route with cocaine.. This is nearly as bad when they posted in the paper years ago a robber with a paper bag over his head asking us if we could identify him.
    Bunch of idiots…

  8. Selena says:

Wow, it should not have gone to that extend. Just ask the people. RCIPS clearly has nothing else to do.

  9. Anonymous says:

What if the trio were bearded and turban wearing folks? Let me guess…. The whole Cayman would be singing a different tune.

    • Anonymous says:

If they were wearing a turban then they would be Sikhs…I presume you are trying to denigrate Muslims, which is also a stupid thing to do as by far the majority of Muslims are peace loving. There is so much ignorance here…you just cannot fix ignorant and stupid.

      • Anonymous says:

        Stupid ….

      • blah blah blah says:

Oh really, Sherlock! Why don’t you go wear your holier than thou crucifix in Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Nigeria, Yemen, etc. and see how fast your arse is set afire. You’re absolutely right, one simply cannot fix ignorant and stupid.

        • Anonymous says:

So this logic of this poster is that provided Cayman “Christians” behave no worse that the world’s lowest common denominator of religious ignorance and intolerance then all will be well in the world. Good to see that the Good Samaritan parable sunk in with this one.

          • Anonymous says:

Well done 9.53, pretty clear that blah blah blah has some issues, probably involving the absence of a father figure in his formative years, combined with an unpleasant experience at Sunday school and possibly some bad chicken from one of caymans less well known establishments. Relevance to subject was zero, message hate filled and failure to pick up on the point made in return.

        • Diogenes says:

Going by your post, clearly not. His post pointed out the original poster could not discriminate between Muslims and Sikhs, or between peaceful Muslims and a handful of fanatics. And guess what, you have the same prejudices and lack of wordly understanding. You truly cannot fix ignorant or bigoted.

      • Anonymous says:

You cannot fix ignorant and stupid, but you can impose gay marriage on them in the face of their bigotry.

    • Anonymous says:

Let me go out on a limb here …. You don’t get to visit the real world too often.

  10. Knot S Smart says:

The ‘white’ people with ‘white bands’ on their knees have ‘white bags’ of ‘white powder’ and they are dropping the ‘white powder’ on the ground…
Send out the ‘goon-squad’ and ‘sharp-shooters’ with their guns…
    Hurry! Hurry!
    Hurry Come!!…

The police had to respond to this incident, even though it turned out to be harmless. As a member of the local Hash, I was contacted by a police officer who suspected they were laying a Hash trail. Full marks to this officer for recognising what is an unusual occurrence here (Cayman Hash very rarely lay trails). Roger Davies.

If there was ever a good advert not to go running this photo is it. They all seem to have knee support bandages on.

  13. Anonymous says:

    Try that in Washington, D.C.

  14. Anonymous says:

They should have used bread crumbs.

  15. Anonymous. says:

The police/ public were right to look into this . It could have been something else being spread around by unscrupulous people then the outcry would have been that the police did not respond. Some of you out there really need to be lest critical of everything. I wonder what kind of community you want to live in. Everything – action or inaction seem to bother some of you who appear to sit around all day complaining about everything. Have you contributed anything positive to society lately?

    • Anonymous says:

True, but a simpler approach would have been to engage them in conversation and ask them what they were doing rather than the convoluted approach of taking photos, sending them to the police, collecting samples and testing. Could have been sorted out in 30 seconds, it’s not like they look particularly scary or unaproachable!

  16. Anonymous says:

White Powder was involved. This reminds me of a story of a guy who told me about his restaurant which was burgled. He couldn’t get the police to show up until he mentioned seeing packages of white powder in the trunk of thier car. After calling that in the cops showed up in record time.

The RCIPS only want to be on scene to take down the high profile stuff just like they watch on TV. All else is not worth getting off thier asses for.

Perfect use of our policing resources. Not!!!
I thought is was the first of April when I read it.
