Nominees still needed for annual hero awards
(CNS): Government officials are still urging the community to put forward the names of local people, dead or alive, for the 2016 National Heroes Day honours in relation to agriculture. There is just one more week for people to put forward farmers, growers and anyone involved in cultivation for the various awards for agriculture pioneers throughout the history of the Cayman Islands, up to the present time.
Officials said the definition of agriculture was the science or practice of farming, including the growing of crops and the rearing of animals, to provide food, fibre and other products used to sustain and enhance human life.
There are five nomination categories for outstanding contributions to the development and/or delivery of agriculture in the Cayman Islands:
Early Pioneer – Anyone who has made a significant contribution before 1960 (may be alive or deceased).
Pioneer – A person who has made a significant contribution between 1960 and 2005 (may be alive or deceased). A commemorative insignia and certificate will be awarded.
Emerging Pioneer – Persons who have made significant contributions from 2005 to present. These persons will receive certificates, but will not receive a commemorative insignia.
Memorial Scroll – Any deceased persons who were leaders or notable contributors to the development and/or delivery of agriculture in the Cayman Islands. These persons will be recognised with certificates, but will not receive commemorative insignias.
Long Service Award – Persons (living) who may not necessarily have been a leader, but who have contributed for ten years or more. These people will be recognised with certificates, but will not receive commemorative insignias.
Last week officials revealed that only a dozen nominations had been made in connection with this year’s hunt for heroes.
To submit the names of agriculture pioneers before the end of September, complete the forms which are available at post offices, the Government Administration Building, or online at: ministryofhealth.gov.ky

I nominate those Filipinos,Indians,Jamaican farmers who get paid 5-8ky per hour to wake up very early in the morning to cultivate the Cayman hard soil. Not to mention some don’t even have pension remittance or full health insurance coverage. Then sell their bosses products under the heat of the sun, deal with some stressful customers and employers.
The Darwinian Awards would a be much more appropriate ceremony to hold here. I’d pay some big money to see that one. There’s definitely no shortage of well qualified prospective nominees.
I nominate Derek Haynes. He has nothing to do with farming but at least he is a worthy person after his long service to Cayman. He of course will not be considered.
Wait a minute, could I nominate the teachers because they have taken a lot of shit from people who know nothing about education and still turn up and try to improve?
Look, I don’t know if this’ll count for anything, but I’d like to nominate myself for putting up with my wife for past 30 plus years. It’s been a challenge, believe me. She’s still going on about me chucking my empty beer cans off of the upper patio, for one example.
Give that man a can! A true hero.
Pick me, pick me, pick meeeeeeeeee. I turn up every day for work on time and don’t call in Sick unless I am actually really ill.
People are reluctant to be nominated for these awards because, in the past, so many have been given out for pointless entitlement. Thus, the “honour” was devalued and the message lost. Why would anyone want to risk standing for an award that could result resentment and bitterness from one’s fellow citizens?
Just to clarify, if you receive an early pioneer award, can you still receive any of the meritious pineapple platinum and gold awards that were introduced a few years ago?
Also, if you get a golden apple award as well, also known as the full fruit basket, how do we refer to them when addressing?
Can you just be a national hero without these?
There’s an app for this.
I’d like to nominate myself for my heroism over the years (if this is possible). I’ve got a lot to say and just need, at long last, the opportunity to let society know about it all. Thank you for your support.
My nomination goes to Alistair Swarbick the soon to depart the island Auditor General. He is without a doubt the only deserving person for this award for putting up with all the politician BS and advising the people just how badly managed out country is.
Thank you Mr Swarbick.
All due respects to the man but Why would you get an award for doing your job extremely well? Oh wait I know, is it because that is something so unusual when working for government?
The snival service hands them out like candy! We Good.
All joking apart, these comments should signify to Government that the public is getting vey cynical about these “lets award every Caymanian who used the toilet awards”. I asked a 30 year old born Caymanian the other day if he could name the National Heroes. He named Jim Bodden and could not come up with any others.
I shouldnt laugh, but even a boat got one a few years ago!
When a plea goes out for the public to nominate dead farmers you know it is time to give up.
I nominate Tara Rivers for making every teacher feel like shit. That too was home grown in West Bay.
As a former teacher, might I say that your comment is certainly to the point and gave me a good laugh!
Rearing animals is something better left to them to perform to be honest.
Unless there’s an Honorable for Life in it, I’m not interested
I think we might just have run out of heroes.
We may need to change the day from heroes day to dumbass day and we should have no problem getting plenty nominiations.
It should be elevated to “awesome legend” category to generate more interest.
Bruce Blake for taking ONLY 13years to grow artificial turf in prospect
I nominate every employer that has a business license AND pays the proper pension AND pays for health insurance AND doesn’t run a no overtime scam. Anyone?
They have to grow something.
Big Mac for the amount of “fertilizer” he spreads? All organic, home grown I am told.
Still beating this dead horse? Wait, is there a category for that?
Dat phunny
My namdoc tree has just blossomed for a second time this season. Talk about a heroic effort.
Did you say Nam Doc!? Did we just become best friends?
I would like to nominate the Honorable Anthony Eden for his stance on gayness.
Is there still a dinosaur category? Wow, we are a little outdated here….
