Veteran MLA calls homosexuals evil

Bodden Town MLA Anthony Eden

(CNS): One of the oldest sitting members in the Cayman Islands Legislative Assembly, Anthony Eden, has derided rights for the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) community and warned that the next step would be bestiality, as “people demanded the right to make love to their animals”. Debating a private member’s motion asking government to preserve “traditional marriage”, Thursday, the 23-year political veteran was vehement in his condemnation of homosexuality, which he said was “evil”, and launched an outright attack on LGBTs.

In a speech focused on the Bible, he said Satan was working through educators and others, including the media, who used words to describe “deviant behavior” in a way to convince people it was acceptable.

“A social and moral evil is being promoted as normal behavior,” he said, adding that those who believe in the Bible are accused of hate speech.

He said his motion was one of the most important ones he had brought, insisting that marriage had to be between a man and a woman.

The first elected member for Bodden Town, who was one of the founders of the ruling People’s Progressive Movement, said that “what liberal progressives don’t understand” is that the Bible had predicted what was happening today.

In a speech in which he attacked not just the gay lifestyle but homosexuals themselves, in particular men, the MLA quoted from the religious conservative press and asked when it was that “child molesting had become man-boy love and crushing a baby’s skull and sucking out their brains had become a human right”.

Eden also threatened the possibility of violence as he warned homosexuals to stay away from his children or grandchildren.

Angered by the lecture series organized by the Truman Bodden Law School examining the inequities in Cayman Islands legislation relating to the LGBT community, Eden said the focus was misplaced but then, ironically, spent almost an hour of parliamentary time attacking the gay community.

The MLA said people were losing their homes, kids were going hungry, the country was in desperate need of a mental health facility and improving education standards but claimed that “people that come here” were focused on gay rights. He was particularly enraged by the implication from a visiting lecturer that Cayman needed to equalize the age of consent for all, regardless of sexual orientation, to sixteen years.

Immigration law needs to allow same-sex dependents

Eden implied that allowing rights for homosexuals would lead to multiple husbands and man-boy love and various other behaviour, which he described as “wicked and immoral”, that he claimed, without explanation, would ruin people for marriage between a man and a woman.

Dismissing the idea of any reforms to protect the LGBT community from discrimination because of sexual orientation, the local politician also described medical problems that he believed were common among gay men because of the act of anal intercourse.

Taking an ultra-conservative position, the veteran MLA dismissed any consideration of rights for homosexuals and called upon government to “affirm to maintain the definition of marriage to be as expressly provided for by the Constitution and Law as being between persons of the opposite sex”.

The position taken by the 70-year-old member was echoed by some of the younger members of the Legislative Assembly.

His Bodden Town colleague and the youngest MLA, backbencher Alva Suckoo, seconded the motion. While his speech was less extreme than the one presented by Eden, he offered his support for what he described as the “important points”. He said it was a discussion that the country had to have because the rest of the world was promoting the idea of same-sex marriages and, as an overseas territory, Cayman would have to address the issue. Suckoo said that any decision made by political representatives in relation to the matter should not be made against what the people want.

He said he did not support a “lifestyle” or concept that goes against the local culture and said same-sex unions were a sin. Cayman, he maintained, was a Christian society. Suckoo also said he believed that members of the LGBT community were choosing that lifestyle and government “could not legislate for a sin”.

The only other MLA to speak on the motion, although it was supported by the members who were present in the Chamber when it went to the vote, was Finance Minister Marco Archer, who also pointed to his religious position for condemning homosexuality. Taking a ‘condemn the sin not the sinner’ approach, he was still keen to ensure that marriage remained between two people of the opposite sex. While acknowledging the fact that no formal legal petition has yet been made from the LGBT community, he was clearly fearful of the idea of marriage equality.

The minister said he liked to think he was a fair person. He said the LGBT community “shouldn’t be persecuted” because they are “humans just like we are and they have feelings just like we do”.

He said if there was a desire in that community for equality regarding property ownership, laws could be passed to provide for that without changing the definition of the marriage law or the Cayman Constitution.

The motion was largely academic as it simply reaffirmed what is already law, which would not prevent government for passing separate legislation for civil unions for same-sex couples.

The Human Rights Commission has advised government to begin addressing legislation because, given precedent already in the European Court of Human Rights, the Cayman Islands would struggle to defend its current position to continue discriminating against the LGBT community.

    Dear Mr. Eden,

Can you please explain to me how between sex between two consenting adults (be it man and woman, woman and woman, man and man) leads to……and I quote…..”child molesting, man-boy love and crushing a baby’s skull and sucking out their brains”.

What kind of thoughts are going through your mind to come up with that scenario?

What happened to the separation of church and state?

I am a Caymanian and was raised in the church however I do not believe in God. What right do you have to ram your bigoted, hate-fueled, ignorant views on me?

As you warn homosexuals to stay away from you and your family, I warn you and your like-minded associates to stay away from me and mine with your dark ages ignorance.

Instead of worrying about what consenting adults do behind closed doors I suggest you turn your mind to the following that is happening in theses islands:-

    Domestic violence
The staggering high number of sexual assaults made against children and women
    Teenage pregnancies
The dismal level of education in these Islands
The corruption that is rampant in these islands

That list should get you started…and when you’ve dealt with that there’s lots more to deal with.

It’s none of your damn business who is having sex with whom.

    • The Sufi says:

You not believing in God is your right. Are you in anyway suggesting that the things you have listed above namely, domestic violence including sexual violence, teenage pregnancies, dismal level of education and corruption would be remedied by allowing the marriage norms in these islands i.e marriage between a man and a woman to be changed by allowing homosexual marriage. Obviously the practices you have listed are obstructive, destructive and against your conscience so may I suggest that creating another layer to these behaviors , which are also against the societal norms of these islands like gay marriage would only be making bad matters worse. I would suggest that the majority of the population of these beloved Cayman Islands will not stand quietly by and allow this to happen. Most of us unlike you still believe in God, the Bible and we have rights too. We do not want our right to have a society where the marriage laws are strictly between a man and a woman sullied and eroded by those of you who want to change it. I don’t understand why you think that we will not speak out about this. If you are gay that is your business, those of us who are not will never condone it. I pray that you will understand that our rights also matters and we will stand up and speak up. Also please bear in mind, according to my bible that the existence of God does not depend on whether or not you believe in him.

        • Truth Seeker says:

God does not give babies or anyone else cancer. Cancer like other diseases are caused by the impurities in the atmosphere. God created a beautiful earth that was perfect, entered humans over time and changed that with their pollution. God also gave each of us free will- he will not strong arm you to get you to do his will, but there are consequences.

Not much more to add but it would be nice to know if there are any Caymanian males maybe well known in the community, who we have heard rumours about being bi-sexual but keep a good social ‘face’ because they’re not allowed to be honest and would like the choice?

What if these men/women have their affairs with same sex lovers and then remain with their spouses?

Isn’t that worse than condemning gays? Let people be honest so that we are not simply increasing the lies and broken homes, relationships are challenging whether gay or straight, let’s try to work at having more peace and honesty.

Please, not another idiotic “The West Wing” speech. Try reading the New Testament where it is also clearly condemned.

Romans 1:26 ” Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. 27 In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed shameful acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their error”.

1 Cor. 6:9-10 “Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men[a] 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.

      Footnotes:

1 Corinthians 6:9 The words men who have sex with men translate two Greek words that refer to the passive and active participants in homosexual acts.

1 Tim. 9,10 “We also know that the law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the sexually immoral, for those practicing homosexuality, for slave traders and liars and perjurers—and for whatever else is contrary to the sound doctrine”.

Jude 7 “In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire”.

What did Jesus say about marriage?

Matt. 19:4-6 “Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’ 5 and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’[b]? 6 So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Very disappointed with Mr. Eden but more so with the younger so-called progressives like Alva et al. I’m straight and a spiritually Christian-minded person but LGTB is our modern day civil rights concern; prejudice and bigotry should not be tolerated, especially in the year 2015.
I can tell you that many young people in Cayman have friends who are Gay, Lesbians, black, white and from different ethnic backgrounds and unlike those of us older generations do not see these dereferences though the same dark, intolerable lenses as us their parents, grandparents.
There are so much more pressing issues facing the country than this. No wonder why the country is losing some talented Caymanians who are not free to live out who they truly are so when they go overseas and acquire a good quality education they stay overseas where they are not judged by being gay etc but by the content of their talents and character.
The sad irony is that many of these so-called values Politian’s have broken every other laws of the old testament; hence, in the new testament Christ the redeemer said ‘he who is without sin cast the first stone.’ I trust that the Governor will not sign this into law or the FCO will instruct her not to as it breaches human rights that the UK has signed up to.

As a born and raised Caymanian I have no issue with homosexuals/homosexuality (which I would hope you could have deduced by now) because, contrary to what a majority of Caymanians believe, homosexuality is not contagious, nor is it a “social and moral evil — a perversion and an abomination” and homosexuals will not corrupt your precious anglo-christian beliefs, nor will homosexuals go out of their way to force their beliefs on you (unlike other certain ruling parties). They will not kidnap little Bobby or Jessica and make him/her watch “Queer Eye for The Straight Guy” reruns, The Ellen Degeneres Show, listen to Adam Lambert or teach them how to dress nice. There will not be rampant gangs of homosexuals running around, wearing flamboyant clothing, stealing make-up, robbing stores with AIDS filled syringes, corrupting men/women/children, shooting people with their magical sex lube filled “homo-rays of godly sin”, organizing huge, drug induced “Hey Queen” parties in the middle of George Town and they sure as hell won’t want us to change the name of West Bay to “Best Gay”.

Here is a link to an article that will help people understand how being ass backwards and homophobic will hurt us financially; http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2014/11/the-economic-case-for-supporting-lgbt-rights/383131/

    “Now For Something Completely Different”
There are so many other important issues that need to be made that could/would actually have a positive impact on Grand Cayman (I wonder how well “The anti-Gaymen/women Islands” tshirts would sell?) but politicians are more concerned with keeping up the facade that this is still an “island paradise” that has not been turned into a miniature version of America (except for the whole support of gay rights and all that “ungodly” business). We have no more individuality or heritage because we have become nothing more than a floating testament of a past utopia. We attend the beggar’s banquet, sitting patiently and obediently to lick the master’s hand when we are rewarded for our complacency. We have allowed our island to be bought, sold and shared amongst those with the biggest bank accounts and those that are willing to write the biggest cheques so that we will turn a blind eye when they decide what is “safe for the environment” and butcher our island because it will be a “positive change”. We have been “informed” that “there is nothing underneath”, which we know is a blantant lie but we still accept it as fact because then we can continue to go about our scheduled lives, being greedy and complacent and not allow anything burst our bubble of ignorance. If we continue to let ourselves be bought and sold then there will be nothing above either.

    You know what else is a “social evil”? Political corruption;
Political – adjective – of or relating to the government or the public affairs of a country.

Corruption – noun – dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery.

Social – adjective – of or relating to society or its organization.

Evil – adjective – profoundly immoral and malevolent.

You want to make a ruling that will actually secure the future of Grand Cayman and preserve the heritage/futures of your children? Then do so by ruling to not remove the irreplaceable, to not continue to whore us out to the next bigwig that drops a huge bag of corruption in your lap. It may be too late to repair what has been broken but can’t we at least make an effort to do so? If not for ourselves then for the future generations to come…..if there are any.

Masturbating with one hand, watching porn, eating a bacon sandwich with the other. Sounds like a cracking Saturday morning, in all honesty.

That tie is just gorgeous!! He is such a handsome man…I can just imagine him all oiled up and in leathers….mmmmm…such a tease…and those luscious lips….

I was taught the same thing about whites having sex with blacks. Biblical teachings were used to outlaw interracial marriages in the U.S. until the late 1960s. Comparing a loving sexual minority to a dog-poker is the same rhetoric used in the White Southern U.S. where most of the religions in Cayman sprung. Now the descendants of those treated as animals are doing the same to gays. Just another variation on the same old sickening racism, religious terrorism, etc.

There was a time, a few decades ago, when the rest of the western planet held the same intolerant popular opinion. The same arguments were made and over time, and through education, proven to be ill-founded and morally wrong. Not recognizing the genuine love in gay unions in 2015, knowing all that we know, or closed to all that is available to be learned, is a self-damning testament of the state of education in the Cayman Islands and of those remaining dinosaurs that continue to hold this arrogant and closed-minded line – far too many. Thankfully, this will change as a more nimble-minded Caymanian generation takes over and their Caymanian children that have been raised better than this. Thankfully they do exist. Peace.

All is not well in the garden of Eden. Still, world population control will eventually not be needed, we will wipe oursleves out! Only hope the Chinese realise the benefits of LBGT sooner rather than later.

Go back to the stone age Eden, there you can hang out with all the make believe people in the sky, I believe Santa is married to a woman.

We are not ruled by stone age literature and we are not dictated by dark age mentality. To hell with your bible and your deluded perception of reality. We are free human beings, with thoughts, ideas and feelings just like you XXXXX

Very sad to see a basically decent man so wrapped up in intolerance and biblical nonsense that he makes a terrible fool of himself. At least Marco Archer showed strong signs that he is living in the 21st century.

  45. Anonymous says:

How do you feel knowing it’s mostly religious deluded pastors that molest and rape little boy’s? And not law abiding homosexuals.

    • Anonymous says:

“mostly religious deluded pastors”. Huh?? Where did you get this statistic from? I am assuming that this is not bigoted nonsense that you made up.

  46. Michael says:

Fear and hatred are rearing their ugly heads towards homosexuals once again. Don’t worry though, the Bible says its cool. Last I checked Jesus didn’t represent fear and hatred. He seemed like more of a love and respect kind of guy to me.

I saw a same sex couple over the weekend while out with my family and nothing happened. Nothing. Nothing at all. It was as if it didn’t matter at all. I even forgot to be angry.

HAR HAR HAR! Democracy at it’s best! The governmentis the economy and the government rules………..

These bigoted and narrow-minded politicians remind me of the 1950s and 1960s clips of southern US politicians making comments about black Americans (and the current Cayman politicians will end up eventually looking as foolish as those 1950s US politicians…..). “Equal but separate” is not equal….

It was really not that long ago (1998!) where the Cayman Compass ran photos of passengers coming off the ‘gay cruise ship’.

But if these people don’t have the mental capacity to comprehend that some people are different (and therefore we should hate on them), there is nothing much I can say, other than you will eventually look as foolish and idiotic of southern US politicians from the 1950s and 1960s saying keep those n**** out of our schools……

While I hate no man or woman gay or straight, I am in agreement with his final position.

I believe he may have been a bit harsh.

We are taught to love the sinner hate the sin. So while I have no ill will to anyone I do recognize the sin and don’t agree with it.

I personally had no issue with the gay cruiseship landing but I do with changing our laws.

I don’t hate anyone….this matter is not black and white….its not be for it or you hate gays….I don’t hate anyone….I just realise I have to protect generations to come from themselves.

      • Protect generations to come from themselves? So you not only believe that homosexuality is a choice, but one that can be successfully averted by refusing to grant them equal rights? Cause if I have feelings towards the same sex I am not going to act on them if I cannot marry them? What a bizarre universe you inhabit.

Eden you are a complete fool, you could not find anything else to ride in the assembly that would give you some press in your last miserable unproductive years, so you choose this subject. No one wants you or your grandchildren, and they could turn out gay one day too, gayness is not prejudice like you in who it chooses, you are born this way, moron! You are just insinuating hatred towards the Gays, you and your Churches, why don’t you concentrate on all the other sins, like the one you just committed, judge not, or do you ignore that part, shame on you; we shall have our victory one day, and there is nothing you or any other ignorant politician can do about it, so stop blowing hot air, and try to tackle crime, domestic violence, child abuse/molestation, and corruption etc. Or are all of you sinners above the law because you claim to be Christians, as church goers you should know that many shall come in his name, but few are real, that is in the bible too, so you are one of them, claiming to be god like, when you are a sinning Hippocratic human, if I can refer to you as human. I have dogs and cats and birds, and would never think of having sex with them, but you will twist this any way you see fit to try to get people on-board with you, why you did not mention fathers laying with daughters, and sons, or uncles marring their nieces, and cousins and brothers marring sisters, is this OK? I am-sure this is a sin too, but you are just hell bent on hating gays. when the tourist dollar start to go elsewhere then you will sing a different song, get a life, you are a major embarrassment on the world stage, find a cave in Bodden Town and stay there

      • Anonymous says:

So good. If you don’t mind, I’m totally using your argument, especially the last sentence. ” Find a cave in Bodden Town…stay there” could also apply to my boyfriend, realter, banker, lawyer…

Don’t worry Tony, the Queervoultion is coming and your hatred can’t stop it. Well done to those who didn’t show for this vitriol. God is watching you all. See you in hell!

    • Caymanian says:

I second that. I might have taken a slightly gentler way of expressing it but the truth is this is a slippery slope we stand on….things like polygamy, beastiality and satanism lie in the wings waiting for this door to be opened.

I read an article in a Jamaican paper about a mother and daughter love bond and how that is a special niche group within the LGBT group. Not innocent love either but sexual.

Keep in mind when we let the dog in so come the fleas.

Most people don’t stop and think about the size of this situation as we think its just a LGBT situation and that people who say no to Gay marriages are haters and the truth is its not that black and white…it’s far more complex an issue than just that.

For the people who stand against it its about much more and we realise it’s a lot easier to prevent something than to try to fix it after….hard to slow aboulder rolling down a hill….

      • Cass says:

It’s hard for people to see the long road ahead; bestiality is right around the corner. Have fun kissing your dogs; oh people already do that so no biggie. Legalize gay marriage and legalize marijuana at the same time; that’s where I stand. Peace.
