More flooding expected as rain continues

(CNS Video) Update Thursday 6:30am: All government schools will be open today, operating under normal working hours, the Department of Education Services announced early Thursday. The National Weather Service issued another severe weather warning on Wednesday evening as more rain was forecast for the remainder of the week, putting more homes at risk of flooding. With many roads impassable after more than 8 inches of rain over the last 24 hours, the NRA was out trying to clear drains and alleviate the flooding problem where possible but were pressed for resources and officials told CNS that the amount of water was making things tough for crews.

Weather officials said models indicate a further 3 to 4 inches are likely to fall over the next 24 hours, placing some parts of the Grand Cayman’s lower lying areas and homes in jeopardy. With roads closed, stalled vehicles stranded in deep water and the rain water rising all over the island, police were urging people to drive with caution and stay off the roads if possible.

June floods on Grand Cayman

Several schools and the UCCI closed early due to the weather and even Finance Committee was adjourned early to allow MLAs to get out to their constituents and help with the flood work. Officials said that any school closures tomorrow will be reported as soon as possible and parents are advised to stay tuned to the news for updates. Shelters were opened today, however no one checked in and they were closed this evening but will reopen if necessary.

Satellite images show extensive multi-layered clouds across the NW Caribbean, with scattered showers, some of which will be heavy and accompanied by thunder, as confirmed by weather radar images. The area of cloudiness and showers is moving slowly toward the east to northeast and it is expected to linger over the Cayman area for the next few days.

This post is specifically for Posters 04/06/15 10:38 and 4/06/15 12:37 who were both so sure they knew better than the NWS that the rain was over. It’s now 04/06/15 4:37 and it’s bucketing down! Why are some people so cantankerous? So mean? So annoying? So know-it-all and know-nothing?

for poster 4.39 get out of your shower. Around Sunset House we have had just a few drops the whole day, about 1 sixteenth of an inch at most.

Exactly what model are they looking at when forecasting another 3 to 4 inches over the next 24 hours. Looking at their own Doppler radar images the rain belt has now passed to the east of us and my forecast is zero to a half inch max.
We did not get a severe weather warning until we had already experienced 48 hours of torrential rain and now we get a further warning which is totally unnecessary.
What with the NRA who do nothing to clear the drains until after the start of the rainy season and now this abysmal performance from the NWC we have yet more classic examples of gross incompetence amongst our Government agencies.

Why is it the nra did not proactively started blowing the wells out knowing a week in advance this system was brewing and June is known to be rainy season throughout the history of the Cayman Islands? There’s two well on my road and they are clogged and guess what, water is now everywhere! This is just pure incompetence!
