Workforce agency reaches out to unemployed

(CNS): As government continues to wrestle with the problem of significant unemployment among the local workforce in the face of more than 20,000 valid work permits on the islands, the National Workforce Development Agency is hitting the road next week. The agency is hoping to help jobless Caymanians find work and help them navigate the on-line service.

The agency, which is still relatively new and underfunded, continues to come in for criticism on a host of fronts. A combination of not enough hands on deck and continued problems with the agency’s website is still causing frustration among those using the services.

However, officials said that in an effort to provide improved customer service to its clients in their job seeking efforts, they will have agency staff on hand in all of the district libraries next week to help job seekers register online with the NWDA, search the job portal and apply for the jobs. The staff will also help people write resumes and prepare for the interview process.

The outreach starts at the public library in East End on Monday morning, 10:00am until 1:00pm, and then moves to Bodden Town Library on Wednesday 14 January in the afternoon, 2:00pm to 5:00pm. They team will be in West Bay on Monday 19 January from 10:00am to 1:00pm, and then finally in North Side on Wednesday 21 January from 10:00am to 1:00pm.

Instead of reaching out to the unemployed it would be more efficient if all unemployed are required to register with NWDA in order to continue receiving benefits. Shouldn’t the unemployed be embracing any services offered by nwda. Why does the govt need to spend money to reach out to them? I just don’t get it.

I am sick of hearing that the NWDA is appealing to the unemployed. The unemployed should get off their backsides and go get a job…government should hire some of these unemployed ie garbage collectors. How come all the fast food restaurants and grocery stores have majority work permit holders. Are you going to tell me a Caymanian can’t be a cashier or stock shelves?

shagee..Caymanians can be if they want, but they dont and feel the wages are beneath them.

Some of us can and are able to work and want just that. But when you take a job like the ones you mentioned and get hurt and then try to look for an appropriate job, ha it just does not work instantly as you want it to. The truth is that it takes a lot of work to get work. At least i am one of the ones that are not giving up. While us older ones are trying to find work i wish i could see the youngef ones out there doing the same instead of at the bars everyday and everynight!
