Error sets back claims and objections hearings
(CNS): Supervisor of Elections Wesley Howell has accepted full responsibility for what was described by his office as “an administrative oversight” that has caused the hearings of claims and objections against the revised list of electors to move to the first week of April. The hearings were scheduled for next week but the magistrate will now meet with voters on 3 April until 7 April, which means the final official register of electors for the May 2017 General Election, which was supposed to be published on 1 April, will now be published on 11 April.
But the Elections Office said this would not affect Nomination Day. Candidates will not have the final lists of the people eligible to vote in their districts when the campaign officially starts and will need to use the current list, but they can cross-check with challenges on the election site.
The distribution of voter ID cards, however, will begin on Cayman Brac before the list is published. This will be on Friday and Saturday, 24 and 25 March, at the Cayman Brac Agricultural show. ID cards for people on the Claims and Objections List will be produced, if necessary, once the hearings are concluded for the 11 April official list.
Voter ID cards issue schedules for Grand Cayman will be announced soon, officials said.
Anyone wishing to check the list of people for which a claim or an objection has been filled can be found on the Elections Office website and at the following locations in each Electoral District:

As I understand the article, we won’t know who all of the qualified voters are but voter id cards will be issued. What?
Innocent members of the public should not have to “cross-check” any list. The public should be given correct information on which to go on.
Potentially, this is a disaster waiting to happen.Will there be a controversy on election day over vote count and who is actually a valid voter?
For an elections office whose members have worked so hard over the past months and who has a supervisor who is extremely extremely bright and meticulous, I receive this news of an “error” with a feeling of skepticism. How can this happen?
Remember, the claims in the US elections of interference in campaigns allegations of voter fraud? Will there be such allegations in the Cayman Islands linked to “errors” like this one?
It is quite convenient for such an error to occur now.
Why wasnt the voters’ list verified and claims resolved right after the deadline for voter registration?
If candidates dont know who the voters are on nomination day, which “voters” will they be carrying their message to?
Does this mean that candidates get an excuse to further delay their campaign? Will they say that, since they dont know who all of the qualified voters are, they dont know who to direct their political campaigns to? Will this exercise now reduce the period of campaigning (the period where voters get to know their candidates) to two weeks? What a ridiculous and unfair result to the people of the Cayman Islands.
I sincerely hope that these are not delay tactics influenced by conflicted parties. I hope that the powers that be are not playing games by putting fear into voters by placing their right to vote under investigation. I hope that this is not a play on human rights. I hope that the error is legitimate. I hope that there will not be any voter fraud. I hope that the elections office is above the influence of politics.
How do we know that voters are in fact Caymanian?
