Bryan confirms he will run on Progressives ticket

(CNS): After several weeks courting Deputy Premier Kenneth Bryan, the incumbent for George Town Central, the Progressives have announced that he has returned to the party where he started his political career but then successfully ran for office twice as an independent candidate. The PPM made the announcement on social media as Bryan appeared on Radio Cayman.

Having beaten Marco Archer, a PPM minister, in 2017, Bryan ran for re-election in 2021 against another PPM candidate, Frank Cornwall, and received 87% of the vote. In the April 2025 election, just one other candidate has so far declared that she will challenge him — Carmen McField, a member of the Cayman Islands National Party — though there is still one week to go until Nomination Day.

Explaining his decision to finally rejoin the party after weeks of avoiding a commitment either way, Bryan said that because of the government instability over the last four years during the coalition of independents (first PACT and then the UPM), the public wants a much more unified approach to governance.

He said the government had gone through “a lot of ups and downs… a lot of changes” and “a lot of instability”, which the public doesn’t want to see again. “I have to admit there were a number of different directions… I’m sorry that the country had to go through that,” Bryan added when he appeared on Orrett Connor’s show, For the Record.

Following PPM Leader Joey Hew’s very public invitation to join the PPM, Bryan said he wasn’t the same Kenneth who ran for office the first time in 2013, and the PPM is not the same party that it was then. He said Hew’s approach was “totally different”.

Bryan said he wants to be at the table where the decisions will made about the whole country’s future. He said the call from the public for cohesive government meant he had to choose whether or not to retain his political independence.

“I have grown and recognise that you can’t do everything by yourself, and you do need structure; you do need discipline and you need the right approach to come with one voice,” he said.

Bryan claimed his decision to join a party led him to the PPM because the CINP is fielding a whole slate of inexperienced people, which he said is impractical. He also said he could not run with the TCCP, saying that its members had “walked away when things got hard”.

In fact, Bryan was part of the Cabinet that initially split up PACT by ousting Wayne Panton from its leadership because of his determination to protect the Cayman Islands’ natural resources. The UPM administration that emerged was plagued by internal conflict until four members resigned because they could not support the poor and inappropriate decisions on matters of significant national importance.

Bryan also admitted that neither the CINP nor the TCCP had invited him to join them. He also implied that the TCCP was also running a candidate in GTC against him, but CNS has been unable to confirm that.

He said his reason for leaving the PPM was a specific difference between him and former premier Sir Alden McLaughlin, something that has also changed over the last decade.

Bryan accepted that there were immigration issues. Voters believe that the Progressives had not put Caymanians first and had promoted the goal of having at least 100,000 residents in the Cayman Islands — a target that many believe has already been reached.

However, Bryan said he had been reassured that the party now recognised the need for reform and was on the same page as him. He also said he believed that with an organised, experienced party, he would be able to get even more things done, as the differences among the PACT/UPM members meant too much time was wasted.

He made an appeal to other candidates to join him and team up with the Progressives. Although he did not name anyone, it is understood that Dwayne Seymour, the incumbent for Bodden Town East, will be aligning himself with or joining the party as he takes on Robert Bodden, who is running with the TCCP.

He did not mention his close friend Chris Saunders, who said less than two weeks ago he was confident that Bryan was not running with the Progressives.

However, Bryan did urge Juliana O’Connor-Connolly to run again one more time because of her experience, given how many seasoned politicians are retiring this election cycle. He urged the people of Cayman Brac East to call her and ask her to run again.

They are all not good for these islands and they have sucked out enough of our money while doing nothing of significance for the peoples current and future welfare. I’m trying to think of examples in the UK where so many elected members change ranks, change ranks more than once, and change back again.

On a % basis, its not even close. This is nonsense and has to end. There are zero consequences for elected members changing their affiliations not once, twice or three times. Its extraordinary. We are the keystone cops of democracies.

i’m going to make a bold statement here – we are doomed as a nation as long as the same old teflon coated grifters stay in power sucking on the teets of massive salaries and perks from interested observers.

If i wake up on May 1 and we’re led by L’il Who’y & Billboard Kenny, i’ll keep driving around red bay roundabouts and never come off….just like our political horse traders

You are right, a single party change will get you accusations or at the very least a reputation for disloyalty, dishonesty and duplicitousness for the rest of your career in basically any other Parliamentary system.

Here? Its just business as usual because our politics are not based on policies or positions it’s about using your finger to figure out which way the wind is blowing and following suit. There were never ideological differences between the PPM / UDP it was all egos and bravado which is why their 2017-2021 “Unity Government” went off without a hitch. As soon as it was politically convenient for Alden and Mckeeva to work together they were together like white on rice.

I suspect we are going to have a handful of people elected from each set of parties sprinkled in with a few independents and we are going to be in a very similar situation to 2017 and 2021 where whoever sings the sweetest song to the Kingmakers will get a few years at the wheel, until Caymanians start voting against unprincipled duplicitous politicians that go with the wind on every issue things here will not improve.

Agree, the biggest lie that exists in Cayman’s politics is that the PPM is a successful legacy party, in 2021 their vote total hit the lowest level ever and they lost 2 sitting members of their ‘alliance’ they also failed to make any pickups despite not competing with any other party which would make them a laughingstock in any other country.

The only thing that buoyed them previously was multimember constituencies when they could get subset of voters to vote down the party line and win a handful of seats via plurality, they have never had widespread support.

Another prominent example of a simple truth – Politics here is driven by personalities and egos not policies and positions. Deals are cut for personal advancement and positions not for the betterment of Cayman or Caymanians.

Some simple questions for Kenneth Bryan:

What issues has the PPM changed positions on from 4 years ago when you were criticising them ardently to get reelected and opposed them forming the next government?

What have they agreed to do differently if these Islands are unfortunate enough to have them return to power?

How is this iteration of the PPM with many of the same faces from the past 20 years as things have gotten worse for Caymanians going to be any different in practice?

I hope Kenneth Bryan’s constituents will ask him these questions and more.

  30. The Adeptus Ridiculous of The Cayman Islands says:

Adeptus Ridiculous Transmission: The Eternal Cycle of Caymanian Politics

(A Grand Collation of Political Absurdity, Predictable Resurrection, and Endless Recycling)

Ah, behold, dear citizens! Once again, the wheel turns, the machine grinds on, and the grand illusion of change is paraded before the masses. Yet those of us blessed (or cursed) with foresight already knew this would come to pass.

Kenneth Bryan, that wayward political son, has returned to the hive, pledging allegiance to the very PPM-Genestealer Cult that he once distanced himself from. Was this surprising? Nay. It was written in the stars, foretold in the sacred texts of political inevitability.

ACT I: POLITICIANS NEVER DIE—THE GREAT CAYMANIAN RECYCLING PROGRAM

Cayman’s political elite have proven themselves masters of survival, more regenerative than Tyranids, more recyclable than plastics, and more impervious to scandal than an Adeptus Mechanicus high priest caught hoarding xenos technology.

In this grand recycling program, politicians do not fade into irrelevance. They simply rebrand, wait for public memory to erode, and return under the banner of “stability” and “experience.”

✔ Lost an election? Wait two cycles, come back.
✔ Caught in scandal? Change allegiances, find new allies.
✔ Branded ineffective? Claim the opposition was the problem.

This is not governance—it is a political landfill, carefully managed to keep the same names and faces rotating through power. Cayman does not have career politicians—it has political revenants, creatures that cannot be slain by mere votes or failures.

And so, Kenneth Bryan now joins the ranks of those who have shed their past identities and seamlessly reintegrated into the political recycling machine.

ACT II: THE ILLUSION OF CHANGE—THE GENESTEALER CULT STRATEGY

The People’s Progressive Movement (PPM), that noble bastion of entrenched governance, has once again reabsorbed one of its own.

    This is no accident.
    This is no mere coincidence.

This is the Genestealer Cult at work—its influence growing stronger, its reach expanding, as it consumes wayward politicians and rebrands them as part of the collective once more.

✔ Was Kenneth Bryan ever truly independent? No.
✔ Was his return to the PPM inevitable? Absolutely.
✔ Did he ever actually “oppose” them? Only in the way a petulant teenager opposes his parents before moving back home for financial stability.

And now, as the election nears, the machine pulls its straying components back into the fold. The illusion of independence is dissolved, and the reality of political assimilation is revealed.

    Did we not predict this?
Of course, we did. Because it was always going to happen.

ACT III: THE CURSE OF THE SEER—THE BURDEN OF PREDICTABILITY

To be able to see the future before it happens is not a gift, dear citizens.
    It is a curse.

✔ We knew Bryan would return to the PPM.
✔ We knew that his calls for “stability” were merely coded language for rejoining the old power structure.
✔ We knew that the people would act surprised, as if this was not the most predictable event in recent political history.

And yet, here we are, forced to endure the grand spectacle of political déjà vu.

✔ The electorate will act betrayed.
✔ The media will act as if this is major news.
✔ And the machine will march on, untouched, unchallenged, and undisturbed.

Because, dear citizens, Cayman does not have political surprises—only preordained outcomes disguised as choice.

ACT IV: THE PLASTIC NEVER DECOMPOSES—CAYMAN’S INDESTRUCTIBLE POLITICAL CLASS

This is the final, inescapable truth. Cayman’s politicians are not just resilient—they are unkillable.

    ✔ Governments collapse.
    ✔ Administrations crumble.
    ✔ Parties rise and fall.
✔ But the same politicians return, over and over and over again.

Like single-use plastics that somehow never break down, they simply re-enter the ecosystem under a different form. One day, they are opposition. The next, they are independent. The next, they are the very establishment they claimed to fight against.

It does not matter what name they wear.
It does not matter what party they pledge loyalty to.
The result is always the same.

    ✔ They endure.
    ✔ They return.
✔ They persist, no matter how many times the people attempt to vote them out.

Because, dear citizens, the game is rigged.

    rigged.

ACT V: THE HOLY REVIVAL OF JULIANA O’CONNOR-CONNOLLY—DIVINE INTERVENTION IN POLITICS

And now, as if this entire comedy of errors needed one final act, we have divine intervention.

    ✔ She claims visions.
    ✔ She hears “higher callings.”
✔ She has taken policy direction from forces unseen.

And yet, despite the questionable results of her celestial guidance, the political elite now whispers:
    “Perhaps she should run again.”

    Because why not?

✔ If resurrection works for every other Caymanian politician, why should Juliana be any different?
✔ If past failures never disqualify anyone, why should divine absurdity?
✔ If the electorate falls for it every time, why not one more cycle of mystic madness?

And so, the call goes out once more.
The blessed oracle of bureaucratic mayhem may yet return to the battlefield.

And if she does, do not feign surprise.
Because in Cayman, political reincarnation is not just tradition—it is inevitability.

    EPILOGUE: THE FINAL TRUTH

And so, as Kenneth Bryan’s return to the PPM solidifies yet another predictable betrayal, and as the mystical forces rally behind Juliana O’Connor-Connolly for one more divine spectacle, we are left with the most undeniable truth of all:

✔ The people believe they are in control.
✔ The system allows them to think so.
✔ But in reality, the same players are always waiting, ready to retake the field.

    You cannot vote them out.
You cannot drive them into exile.
    You cannot escape the cycle.

    Because they never truly leave.

They simply change labels, wait for the right moment, and return.

    And they always, always return.

    TRANSMISSION END.

(Until the next predictable farce unfolds—most likely at the next “divinely inspired” press conference.)
