CNS straw poll finds premier most vulnerable incumbent

| 22/04/2025
Juliana O’Connor-Connolly

(CNS): More than half the readers who took part in the CNS straw poll on which incumbents are the most vulnerable thought that Premier Juliana O’Connor-Connolly is the most at risk of losing her Cayman Brac East seat. However, 730 readers took part in the poll, which was open to all, and the district itself has only 521 voters, so the result may not be indicative of what will happen on Election Day.

When asked to put on their pundit hats, more than half of those who voted believe O’Connor-Connor will lose, though other indicators suggest that the premier is in a much stronger position than our poll found, and the result may be wishful thinking more than punditry.

Almost half of the readers who voted (47%) thought that Chris Saunders was the next most vulnerable of losing his Bodden Town West seat. Sabrina Turner was predicted to lose in Prospect, as was McKeeva Bush in West Bay West, tying as the third most vulnerable candidates.

As of today (Tuesday), 730 people took part in the non-scientific poll to predict which of the 14 candidates fighting to keep a seat are the most vulnerable. We have no way of knowing how many are registered voters or in which district they live.

André Ebanks was seen as vulnerable by only 47 (6.5%) of those who voted, compared to 375 readers who said O’Connor-Connolly would lose in the Brac, which is more than the votes she received in the last two elections in her single-member constituency.

While CNS readers differed with regard to who they saw as being vulnerable, almost all who voted in the poll believe that some of the incumbents are vulnerable, with only 19 people predicting that all of the incumbents will be returned to office.

Incumbent candidates can have an advantage over challengers if they have achieved something of note while in office, but voters may not always like what they have done or believe they accomplished enough. Candidates who remain visible to the constituents and spend their time in office working the ground may find it pays off.

However, CNS readers at least seem to think that some of Cayman’s politicians have passed their sell-by dates.

This is a CINP bot poll. If you think Julianna is losing to Dan Scott, you need to get your head checked, regardless of what you think of her.

If CBE voters elect her again, it will confirm they agree with their island remaining stagnant and their young people becoming increasingly depressed and despondent — and for what?

Brac voters don’t think beyond what the Church tells them, with Juju as the chosen messenger, paving their way to Heaven.

Then get your church to teach Juju the difference between right and wrong, also known as Integrity.
And for the sake of Juju supporters that means….

Doing the Right thing, even if nobody is looking.

Stagnant? Under how large a rock do you slither?
Brac tourism and real estate are buoyant. Last two years saw tourism arrivals increase by over 40%. (And this is without a cruise ship industry.) Housing starts are up. Health services have improved. A new cancer and dialysis centre is in the works. Water Authority has completed providing main to the entire north side of the island. Available data and reports suggest that Cayman Brac remains one of the safest areas in the Caribbean. Layman E. Scott High School on Cayman Brac has demonstrated strong academic performance over the years, often surpassing its Grand Cayman counterparts (not bad for such “depressed and despondent” kids, eh?). My businesses are doing well.
Bottom line: You are damn well clueless.

Julie quietly spearheaded and supported many needed improvements and projects.
And, guess what? Woo hooo! Julie got reelected!

If JuJu does keep her seat, can we look at the Brac gaining independence????

You’re forgetting that Dan has an army of paid cronies all over Cayman Brac to ensure he is elected.

You Don’t need to have an army or pay for them…If at the people’s expense, you can use government equipment and money to buy votes, at no cost to yourself.
          Right Juju..?

Why don’t you get Dan to check into this? He likes the court room and perhaps he can stir up some trouble since you brouight up unfounded allegations about “JuJu”.

Do you really think that a trained lawyer and long-time politician who be so stupid to use government equipment to buy votes? I don’t like Juju, so please be specific about your allegations – the anti-Juju people and the public want to know.

CNS, why have you stopped using the photos of Juju on the paver that has still not made its way back to Grand Cayman?

          • Anonymous says:

The equipment is rusting in the Brac, meanwhile Cayman has no option other than paying a private contractor for all paving work.
Perhaps Juju could come and do some paving here to defray the cost to Cayman.

One-time election payments are nothing compared with years of largesse.

See me new paved road, a JuJu gimme
See me new house roof, a JuJu gimme
See me new water tank, a JuJu gimme

Of course, nothing wrong with taking money from every candidate. But they all know that you can only vote for one, and those damned election people have been slowly closing all those postal votes and other means of getting your hands on someone’s elses ballot.

Duh, of course some of us from CBE are selfish. It is in my district – so go Juju.

? What has Dan and his counterpart from CBW/LC done for Brac?

So what you are trying to say is that Juju has a proven track record of being able to source funds from various Government programmes/departments in order to do things for her constituents.

Track the money bobo. Do a freedom of information request on all that stuff. What will you find?

        1. Cabinet approval for paving/roads
        2. A decade long established programme for repairing houses on Brac.
        3. Government giving generators, water tanks and plywood to residents – as part of hurricane preparation and hurricane relief (also approved by Cabinet for years).
Yes, gimme, gimme has been done by Juju in the past and I do hope she will continue to show compassion and a sense of humanity to those like me who are less fortunate, can’t afford house insurance and don’t like to ask for the gimme, gimme.

In her gold mine of Cayman Brac, Juju gets the gold, and we get the shaft.
          How very Christian of her.

Believe me, there are hundreds on the Brac who aren’t offered those “gifts”, and who wouldn’t take them if offered.

Yayyy! Danny Boy got his ass kicked by Julie. Seems his money bought some worthless paid cronies if their goal was to get him elected. Good riddance!

What has been done by the Premier? Are you high?

CNS, this poll makes me laugh. And I do think it is truly “wishful thinking” that the Premier does not enjoy strong support from Cayman Brac East.

The fact of the manner is one can drive thru the Cayman Brac East district to see what has been done by the Premier – whether you agree with what is being done or not.

In contrast, the person presumed to have the best chance to unseat her, Dan “Thin Skin” Scott, has his wife and another woman driving around campaigning for him – wheres Dan?

So my prediction CNS is simple – the Premier will not only retain her seat – but will get more votes than the other 4 combined – 3 of whom wont even come close to the 10% mark.
