Gov’t accused of pre-election road paving, again

(CNS): Romellia Welcome, who is challenging PPM leader and would-be premier Joey HewJoey Hew (GTN incumbent) is the leader of the PPM (aka Progressives). He served as opposition leader from October 2024 until the dissolution of parliament. More in George Town North, has accused the government of waiting until the month before the elections to fix roads in the constituency that are “in a deplorable condition”. Welcome said she has been lobbying for this work for “months and months”, and the opposition leader has known the work was needed for a long time but waited until the eve of the election to start the much-needed repairs.
However, it appears that Hew was only recently able to secure the cash for his constituency after making peace with the UPM minority government in the waning days of the administration. Given his previous position in opposition, he would not have had any say in how cash is allocated.
However, since his party effectively merged with several remaining members of the UPM, it appears that getting roads paved became easier. Three of this last administration’s ministers, including the premier, are now running on the PPM ticket.
Hew was called out by the auditor general in the run-up to the 2021 General Election when he was accused of waiting until just a few weeks before Election Day to begin utilizing the bulk of the roads budget.
In a recent social media post, Welcome said that constituents should not have to wait until the eve of an election to get much-needed road repairs done. “We need things done for our people all year round,” she said as she pointed to the work on roads crossing the two constituencies of GTN and GTC.

I am a GTN constituent but can barely find any information on what Joey and Romelia stand for on important issues like immigration, cruise port, dump etc. any ideas where I can find this information short of speaking to them myself?
I will vote for whoever paves the cut-through to Hurleys from Selkirk
Jay Ebanks spent most of the NRA budget resurfacing roads in North Side. Waste of public fubds.
Cant blame Joey Hew.
At a time when the cost of living is high UPM still spending money.
Between PACT and UPM the debt on
this country is over 500million.
TCCP sloganis Enough is Enough but you were complicit to the ridiculous spending too.
We all pay for roads to be fixed. What difference does it make whether it gets done in December or now?!
People, MPs do not give us anything. We pay for all these work when we license or inspect our vehicles or renew our driving license, so why complain about WHEN they get done? Yes, MPs will try to ensure their area gets attention as soon as possible, but there is no guarantee, so you are not obligated to give your vote to any MP seeking re-election. Vote for the candidate that you feel will work best with others, to fix the multi-million dollar problems. If we get those under control, the smaller ones will get solved too.
shameless sycophant.
To 3:09pm: Please, by all means, I invite you to indicate which sentence is not true. I am really curious. To accuse someone of lying, when they are merely attempting to explain how the process works, is simply irrational. GTN does not want their roads fixed then?
No one to run for in that district. A religious zealot who had been charghed with assault and theft back in 2010. Theft charge did not stick. And then Joey. A dunce who has been promoted past his level of competence
It’s not Joey that’s a problem, it’s the undesirables he will bring to the table if elected…..Kenneth Juju Dumbdum Mac and Saunders will again poison our lives, especially after they overthrow him to make Kenneth Premier..God forbid.
Absentee MP Joey “Who?” aka Dart’s lapdog is absolutely a problem. The fact that he now comes attached to those 4 other leeches just compounds the issues he already presents on his own.
Romelia is not a publicist’s dream I agree, but she has been , and will continue to be a worker for her community.
Joey will forget GTN if elected, and will bring with him the Parasites Kenneth, Jujudas , Mac, Dumberthandumb, and Saunders all of whom will continue to feed at the trough and bring us bankruptcy.
Cayman will proceed happily without them.
Can you tell us more about this assault and theft accusation?
I am confused. All government departments are still working as usual until elections, and NRA is no exception. All projects that were pending, all over the place, are still getting done. How does this become vote buying? How does Hew come into it? I have to wonder if we really understand how our government works — and mind you, I am no PPM supporter.
You can read the 2021 Auditor General Report as it describes how it works and the issues associated with it.
Hew currently has zero say in what the NRA chooses to do.
So, who is to blame, Jay? Edward? Tristan?
Waiting for Joey to show when and for how long he has been asking for these repairs and upgrades. Also Joey should show the communication of who he asked to do the repairs.
The Deputy Governor is shouting accountability for the Civil Service, so lets see who Joey asked and when he asked
To 6:20pm: But why does anyone have to be “blamed”? We all pay for roads to be fixed, so what difference does it make whether it was in December or now?
Tristan is very busy making sure all his own land is opened up with new unnecessary roads.
Hew himself doesn’t but 3 of his PPM colleagues in this election (O’Connor Connolly, Bryan and Seymour) are the majority of the 5 remaining in the unholy alliance that controls the cabinet
Are we meant to pretend that they are not up to the usual PPM nonsense assigning public money just prior to an election to have visible works going on for their incumbents to run on just as mentioned in the article – last election the PPM spent 88% of the NRA’s budget for roadworks between the announcement of the early election and the election itself. Electioneering with the public purse should not be the norm.
It is not a favor but what we pay these MPs to do
She’s not wrong is she..?
