Third deputy appointed to Elections Office

(CNS): Chevala Burke has been appointed as an additional new deputy elections supervisor to assist Wesley Howell, the supervisor, as the clock ticks down to the General Election and Referendum on 30 April. Officials said that Burke brings a wealth of experience and dedication to the role that plays a key part in safeguarding the integrity and efficiency of our electoral processes. She is now the third deputy in the team and the second on Cayman Brac, joining Sheena Glasgow and Ernie Scott.
Burke has worked in several key positions in the Elections Office, including as the presiding officer for the Cayman Brac East electoral district from 2009 to 2017, before taking on the role of returning officer in 2021.
She oversaw candidate nominations, organised and staffed polling stations, supervised vote counting and officially declared the election results. As part of the management team, she will now be involved in the oversight of the election process, ensuring that all procedures are fair, transparent, and in line with legal requirements.
The appointment comes at a critical time as Cayman continues to enhance the electoral systems and prepare for the upcoming elections and referendum, officials stated in a release about the appointment.
“Mrs Burke’s dedication and proven experience in election management are invaluable to our team,” said Howell. “Her leadership will greatly strengthen our efforts to ensure free and fair elections.”
Governor Jane Owen, who makes the appointments for the office given its independence from the rest of government, congratulated Burke.
“I am delighted to see Mrs Chevala Burke step into this key role as Deputy Supervisor of Elections. Free, fair, and transparent elections are the foundation of any democracy, and her leadership will help ensure the continued success of the electoral process in the Cayman Islands. I have full confidence in her abilities and wish her every success in this important role,” Owen added.
Burke will also continue to serve as the returning officer for Cayman Brac East for the 2025 General Election and Referendum.

This would appear to be a bit of forward planning so that when Mr. Ernie retires as ‘Brac Elections Supervisor’ they have someone with hands-on training (that they can only get once every four years) ready to take on the job. And forward planning is always a good idea.
