Election Day confirmed as 2025’s 13th public holiday

(CNS): The Cayman Islands Government has confirmed the official list of public holidays for 2025 after the designation of Wednesday, 30 April, as General Election and Referendum Day. All registered voters, even those still required to work on public holidays, must be given time off to go to the polls. No employer is allowed to make any pay deductions or impose penalties on workers who need time to vote.

Under the law, any employer who refuses or interferes with the granting of a reasonable time to vote commits an offence and is liable to a fine of up to $500 or imprisonment.

Any employees denied the opportunity to vote should report the infraction to the authorities.

Three of this year’s public holidays have already come and gone, and Election Day is one of ten remaining, including the new Emancipation Day holiday introduced last year and the King’s Birthday, which will be celebrated on 23 June.

This means that many workers will enjoy an extra seven days off work within three months between Friday, 18 April, when the Easter break begins, to Monday, 7 July, when the Cayman Islands mark Constitution Day.

But after that it will be more than four months before the next public holiday, which will be Remembrance Day on 10 November, and then the official Christmas vacation on Thursday and Friday, 25 and 26 December.

See the full public holiday list below:

  • Friday, 18 April – Good Friday
  • Monday, 21 April – Easter Monday
  • Wednesday, 30 April – General Election and Referendum Day
  • Monday, 5 May – Emancipation Day
  • Monday, 19 May – Discovery Day
  • Monday, 23 June – King’s Birthday
  • Monday, 7 July – Constitution Day
  • Monday, 10 November – Remembrance Day
  • Thursday, 25 December – Christmas Day
  • Friday, 26 December – Boxing Day.

We should definitely have a Dr.Roy day to celebrate his rescuing Cayman from becoming a dependency of Jamaica when they went independent.
That decision to remain with the UK is what provided the foundations of Cayman’s success.

I think we should have the entire week off, to celebrate democracy and how it has saved Cayman from itself over time. There’s never been a better example of the law of unintended consequences than our democratic political system here in paradise.

    Amen sistah! #banleafblowers

You forgot to mention that all of the government schools have to close the day before as well so they can set up a few folding tables and chairs at a handful of them.

    How very ridiculous.
Most importantly, remember to stock up on your liquor on the 29th. Those laws are even more stupid.
