Veteran news broadcaster hits hustings with PPM

(CNS): Longtime broadcaster and CIGTV news anchor Donna Bush was making instead of reading the headlines on Thursday when the Progressives announced she would be running for office in Savannah on their platform. Rumours that had circulated for more than a week that Bush would be replacing Josh Parsons, who recently dropped out of the running, were confirmed in a press release. She is the second former news reporter to hit the campaign trail with the PPM, joining her former colleague at Cayman 27, Kenneth Bryan.

Bush, who is making her first run for office, will be taking on Heather Bodden, the incumbent who is running with The Cayman Community Party (TCCP). However, PPM Leader Joey Hew said the party was confident that Bush would beat Bodden in what is currently a head-to-head race in one of Cayman’s larger constituencies.

The PPM said she was a trailblazer in local broadcasting who has shaped how Caymanians stay informed, and has earned the trust of the people after some thirty years in broadcasting by holding leaders accountable and ensuring transparency in public affairs. Beyond the newsroom, she has dedicated herself to mentoring young Caymanians, creating opportunities, and building confidence in the next generation.

“My commitment is to ensure that our community has the resources and opportunities needed to thrive. I will work tirelessly, both in Parliament and within our neighborhoods, to advocate for real solutions that improve the lives of our residents. I am excited about what we can accomplish together with the proven, stable leadership of the PPM, and I look forward to building a brighter future for Savannah,” she said.

Hew said Bush was a powerhouse. “Her ability to connect with people, her deep understanding of the challenges faced by the Cayman Islands, and her unwavering integrity make her an exceptional candidate for Savannah,” he said.

“We are confident she will defeat her opponent and provide the highest level of representation for the people. What the people of Savannah are calling out for is ‘Action’. They need representation that actually gets things done. Donna has always stood for truth, fairness, and delivery — values that align perfectly with the People’s Progressive Movement. She is exactly the kind of leader Savannah needs.”

Another talking head who thinks she should help run the country, following Foolio, Austin and Kenny. Can we please stop electing these glib lightweights just because they can string a couple of sentences together? It hasn’t worked well in the past and it won’t work with her.

Donna is a huge improvement over Heather. Wayne is trying to create another version of PACT. Look at the bunch of candidates with him. Not one can be an effective minister.

That means you will help inflict on Cayman a Kenneth Mac disease that will destroy us.
Donna is a nice woman, but a vote for PPM now means a government of the most unsavory bunch.

Your votes are not going to her, they are going to make Kenneth, Juju, Seymour Saunders and of course Mac , the people who run our lives and further enrich themselves.
People like Donna are merely election fodder used by illiterate unprincipled unemployables to get into power and raid the country’s finances.

Saw her at quite a few of the public meetings the PPM held prior to the 2021 election – She did always seem very comfortable being spin doctor for the PPM despite nominally being a civil servant not a political appointee,

At least now she will never credibly be able to hold a job in journalism again which is a silver lining

Being an MP is not easy. You have people waylaying out everywhere, believing you can shake a stick and solve their particular problem. They come to your house at all hours asking for your money or to help them get a job. If a bill is up for consultation, MPs need to spend the time and read it backward and forward and discuss it with their constituents to make sure they understand it and/or can voice their concerns. If they rush to get a Ministry, then very little gets done in their constituency and because district councils have not been created (which is in the constitution!) they do not have a group of people that cand get things done at neighborhood level. If they manage to get a motion passed in the house, there is a 50/50 chance nothing will be done about it anyway, so before rushing to say they are running, people should think long and hard about what they are getting into.

André, Dan: Gentlemen, please discuss the many pros (and few cons) of forming a synergy. Nothing against Ms. Heather, but we need candidates for the 21st Century. We need candidates who will pay attention to civil servants and use their common sense. Enough egos. Enough wasting public funds. Do we really need a $100 high school? What happened to the many motions that have been approved over the years? What happened to the Yolande Forde report and Vision 2008?
