But according to former members of the party, the original constitution called for the members to elect the party team and leader before the campaign begins.
The PPM leader has faced criticism, including from former members, that the party machinery is nothing more than a charade. This decision to hold a congress after the candidates were already nominated and McTaggart publicly declared as McLaughlin’s successor has also seen the party accused of undermining the originating principles of the party and the internal democratic principles.

Nevertheless, on Friday night the members will be meeting to see the candidates that have been selected on their behalf and to rubber stamp McLaughlin’s selection of McTaggart to step in as premier, while the premier, if he is returned, satisfies on paper the constitutional requirement to demit the top job for one term. He has already stated that if re-elected, he will take up the role as minister of financial services and overseas trade and as an advisor to McTaggart.
The PPM is fielding eight candidates in an alliance with two independents but they are hoping to secure several more independent candidates on that alliance platform before Election Day so as to define a clear path to a government without depending on the party’s current controversial political partner, McKeeva BushMcKeeva Bush (CDP), West Bay West MLA Speaker of the LA, Leader of the Cayman Democratic Party. Although McLaughlin has publicly denied running in any alliance with Bush, the party is not fielding any candidates in West Bay and none of the other candidates in that district have declared a formal alliance with the government coalition.
