PPM to hold national meet after picking team

| 08/03/2021

(CNS): The Progressives will be holding their national congress on Friday, almost two weeks after already selecting its team to run for office and months after Premier Alden McLaughlin announced Roy McTaggart as heir apparent for his job if the party secures enough seats. But according to former members of the party, the original constitution called for the members to elect the party team and leader before the campaign begins.

The PPM leader has faced criticism, including from former members, that the party machinery is nothing more than a charade. This decision to hold a congress after the candidates were already nominated and McTaggart publicly declared as McLaughlin’s successor has also seen the party accused of undermining the originating principles of the party and the internal democratic principles.

However, given that the membership was never properly consulted over McLaughlin’s decision to form a government with his former nemesis, McKeeva Bush, many former Progressives long accepted that the party itself is no longer functioning as it was intended.

Nevertheless, on Friday night the members will be meeting to see the candidates that have been selected on their behalf and to rubber stamp McLaughlin’s selection of McTaggart to step in as premier, while the premier, if he is returned, satisfies on paper the constitutional requirement to demit the top job for one term. He has already stated that if re-elected, he will take up the role as minister of financial services and overseas trade and as an advisor to McTaggart.

The PPM is fielding eight candidates in an alliance with two independents but they are hoping to secure several more independent candidates on that alliance platform before Election Day so as to define a clear path to a government without depending on the party’s current controversial political partner, McKeeva Bush, and whichever members of his West Bay team are elected.

Although McLaughlin has publicly denied running in any alliance with Bush, the party is not fielding any candidates in West Bay and none of the other candidates in that district have declared a formal alliance with the government coalition.

It makes me sad to see that Roy is mixed up in this mess. I can’t support Roy as part of this alliance.

Roy McTaggart is a puppet for Alden. I am so disappointed in Roy I thought he was a leader but he a spineless

Was Roy selection before Party Congress by a vote from all or them? or it was just who ‘All-den” handed
      picked?

That means he may not be official head of the party, but for sure the “poppet master”.

They must have changed the party constitution because last I knew the members of each constituency are meant to choose who runs for office in the respective areas…

      Alden dictates!

I’d much rather have Roy than some newbie managing the country’s finances. Roy has already proven himself and knows what he’s doing. Pity I can’t vote for him. He’d have my vote in a heartbeat.

Didnt Ezzard try that approach, and ended up running as a party of one.

Doesn’t matter what Ezzard did. This is to do with the PPM and their constitution which has existed since the inception of the party.
