Independents secure nine seats

| 25/05/2017

(CNS Elections): With independents securing three major PPM ministers’ scalps and the CDP failing to secure any seats outside of West Bay, the final results have left Cayman facing significant uncertainty over who will lead the next government. The results were all in well before midnight, but the question of who will lead the next government and who will be sitting in Cabinet is completely up in the air.

With all nineteen seats counted, the tally was nine independents, seven PPM and just three for the CDP.

The PPM secured some surprise results, with Barbara Connolly taking the George Town South seat with 40.6% of the vote, ahead of Mike Adam who had been tiped to take the seat but in the end secured just over 33%. Paul Hurlston, Catherine Tyson and Alric Lindsey all lost their deposits after failing to secure 10% of the vote.

Over in West Bay there was no change. McKeeva Bush secured 76% of the vote taking his WBW seat easily. Bernie Bush received 54% of the vote in WBN and Capt. Eugene Ebanks secured 56% in his head-to-head race in WBC. Tara Rivers (IND) took 53.8% in WBS, well ahead of  CDP candidate John Jefferson.

The Results in Cayman’s first ever election under OMOV in SMCs are as follows:

West Bay North – Bernie Bush, CDP

West Bay West – McKeeva Bush, CDP

West Bay Central – Capt. Eugene Ebanks, CDP

West Bay South – Tara Rivers, Ind

George Town North – Joey Hew, Progressives

George Town West – David Wight, Progressives

George Town Central – Kenneth Bryan, Ind

George Town South – Barbara Conolly, Progressives

George Town East – Roy McTaggart, Progressives

Red Bay – Alden McLaughlin, Progressives

Prospect – Austin Harris, Ind

Savannah – Anthony Eden, Ind

Newlands – Alva Suckoo, Ind

Bodden Town West – Christopher Saunders, Ind

Bodden Town East – Dwayne Seymour, Ind

North Side – Ezzard Miller, Ind

East End – Arden McLean, Ind

Cayman Brac West and Little Cayman – Moses Kirkconnell, Progressives

Cayman Brac East – Juliana O’Connor Connolly, Progressives.

Check back to CNS later today for full details and analysis of the results.

That’s a stretch…PPM did a decent job but they were far from perfect. I think the election results speak for themselves, a Government is only as good as the constituents that vote them in.

The problem with OMOV is not the fact that everyone gets gets one vote, it is the fact the districts were shrunk to the size that someone like Kenneth could actually get elected (WAY too small) and that term limits weren’t included.

Think I’m wrong? If he could beat Marco who is the best MLA in decades, how the hell do you expect to remove someone in a district that thinks that way? Get used to a couple of these seats having horrible representatives from now on.

    • Diogenes says:

I can see your frustration at the result, but that is also the beauty of OMOV. The people of GTC deserve the representation they desire. Under the old system, the people of GCN, GTS, GTE, & GTW decided who would represent GTC. Setting aside any personal animosity, most people would agree that we (the people of Cayman) owe a huge debt of gratitude to Marco Archer for the way that he managed the finances of this country over the last four years, and the legacy of what he has done will continue for many more years to come.

A majority of the voters in GTC, 495 of them to be precise, felt that they were no better off after four years by Marco Archer stabilizing the finances of the country, paying off debt, and setting aside some money for the huge contingent liabilities that lie before us. It’s probably hard for some of them to understand why it costs so much for the government to fulfill the promise they made to Civil Servant that after 35 years of service they would have free health care for the rest of their lives, when any one of Kenneth’s 495 supporters can go to the George Town Hospital and not have to pay anything either. And that includes those who have never worked a day in their life!

Kenneth has four years, as do the other 18 MLAs, to show the people of GTC that they are better off by having elected him. What we the people have to ensure is that none of the 19 elected take the money that belongs to the entire country and hand it over to their supporters for no good reason other than to ensure that they will always have a majority of the vote at election time. All we have to do is abide by the laws of this country and speak up when we see something wrong, and no politician will be able to create a fiefdom anywhere in Cayman.

Caymanians have spoken. We want representation for us, not for special interest groups or for financial interests. And if you’re not a voter – sit down. Go back to where you can vote if you want a say. You’re here as our guest – remember that, I know this will get tons of thumbs down by CNS’ primarily expat and Caymanian hating commentators, Just shows us who you really are.
I am proud of my Eastern district voters who rejected the party system, Let’s hope the CDP and PPM don’t combine now to hold on to power for themselves.

  4. Diogenes says:

One possible solution out of this plight is a PPM government with independent candidates Suckoo, Eden, and Rivers all given Ministerial positions thus .forming part of the government, but without them having to become members of the PPM.

1&2) Premier – Alden and Deputy Premier Moses, both with same portfolios as before thus giving continuity of relationships with UK and overseas.
    3) Eden as Minister of Culture + Health. Yes it will be hell for four years but better than a lifetime of hell.
    4) Roy as Minister of Finance & Financial Services – the only visible option.
    5) Tara as Minister of Education
    6) Juliana as Minister of Works/Development/Agriculture etc
    7) Suckoo as Minister of Environment & Social Development
Joey, Barbara, David remain on the Back Bench and the Premier will always be on a knife edge with respect to decisions that he has to make.

Appoint a Speaker from outside the House, like a post career Civil Servant (not Linford) who worked in the Legislative Assembly and who knows all of the protocol and can rule fairly without kissing butt holes.

Ezzard, obstinate as he may be, is another alternative to Eden for Minister of Health and Culture, just don’t let him have anything to do with environment.

As much as I like him, please don’t make Harden our Premier, and keep Saunders as far from our finances as you possibly can!

All the blame going around for voting in people not qualified? We can only vote for candidates who stood for election! the best candidates, as usual, didn’t stand – either because they’re too busy making a lot of money in private sectors (and that’s ok but i wish it was different), or they’re not allowed because of draconian rules about eligibility (surely we need to objectively review who can stand for election)

and for those saying it’s crazy people with only 1 or 2 or 5% of the electorate can’t possibly represent….the rules mean only small #’s of people can/will vote for candidates….the rules are what’s brought us to this, and they need changing (term limits/eligibility/etc/etc/salaries/etc)

meanwhile, get ready for a few flip flops and 4 years of more nothing really…..

  13. Caymanian donkey says:

Ok now that this is over. Let’s see if any of these elected persons come back into their districts. Simple answer No, they got the job now!

  14. Anonymous says:

Before people go on talking about the party system being dead, let’s give this one a think.

Two of the independents got voted in last time as PPM, so really those seats didn’t change, there was no change in ideology. If you look at the margin of victory through GT total and consider the old system before OMOV, PPM likely would have run a landslide across GT and Kenneth would be sitting just where he was 4 years ago (and where he should be), with not enough votes to get a seat.

Secondly, the Independents are not a party, those that voted for Alva or Tony would not have voted for Saunders or John John and those that voted for Ezzard and Arden would not have voted for Kenneth. There is no total unity of independents. One of the major Parties will control the government.

  15. Anonymous says:

Integrity, intelligence and experience are the main qualifications for a good politician, but not in Cayman.

  16. Diogenes says:

Donald Trump’s election kool-aid has been imported into Cayman, and I predict that an Independent candidate will be named as the next Premier, and he/she will be removed from office before the end of the year.

This is a good thing for Cayman, as only through pain will we be able to mature. Anyone who failed to get more than 50% of the vote will know that next time they can easily be removed, so they will work for the people or try to grab as much as they can get for themselves in four years.

Since Kenneth Bryan is the man of the hour I will use him as an example, but this applies to most of them.

Kenneth received less than 500 votes, and Cayman has a population of 50,000+ and registered voters in excess of 20,000. So Kenneth’s supporters represent less than 1% of the total populations, and less than 3% of the registered voter. What does this mean?

Most people did not vote for a candidate who would best serve the country, but for a candidate who would best serve them. Kenneth, like all the others, was elected on promises, so when he fails to keep his promises then his supporters will become disenchanted/disillusioned and search for another political saviour.

What will cause people to become disillusioned with their candidate? The euphoria will wear off, and the handouts that bought their votes will gradually dwindle to nothing until they magically reappear just before the next election. Some will get appointed to cushy government boards, or good pay for do-nothing jobs, but most of them will soon realize that their candidate will not continue to pay their rent, water bill, electric bill, phone bill, and give them $25 every time they ask. People like Saunders will blame the opposition, whomever they may be, for not passing legislation telling banks how much they can charge/pay as interest and all of the other promised social programs will not materialize and people will still have to pay their mortgage or lose their house.

Please do not blame one-person-one-vote for incompetents being elected as they were elected just as frequently under the old system. You are now in a position to hold your Representative, whether you voted for them or not, accountable for their actions. After a few my election cycles we still start to get the hang of this new system and begin to elect people who are mostly capable of doing what needs to be done for the benefit of all, rather that what would please a few.

You have no right to speak about President Trump!!!

    • ThIs WrItInG Is VeRy IrRiTaTiNg says:

Any easy way to solve the problem of so few people electing an MLA is to go from single member constituencies, which unnecessarily divide the islands into small factions, to island wide voting where everyone gets 19 votes. The 19 people with the most votes become our MLAs regardless of where they live to serve everyone in the Cayman Islands. If an MLA is only looking out for the few that voted for him/her then we will be taking a giant step in the wrong direction. All MLAs need to have the best interests of the Cayman Islands in mind at all times.

      • Anonymous says:

We don’t need 19 MLA’s or 19 votes. OMOV with island wide voting will suffice.

Outside of West Bay, where there are folks that can read, and seniors that did not accept 800 bags of groceries and frozen turkeys – most would never cast in favour of the disgraced CDP leader who chronically misused his position of trust, using public funds as if it were his own money for his own glory. For anyone disillusioned with PPM, the Independents were the only available alternative.

I hope our Independent coalition government swiftly amends our Constitution – it needs a lot of work. For starters we need: term limits (to force retirement of career MLAs), an Independent non-party-aligned House Speaker, loosen Birth Caymanian criteria, honor our civil and human rights obligations…and more. We need to scale back our unrealistic infrastructure ambitions, blooming payrolls, and CIG’s unaccountable spending practices. We need to conform to International Public Accounting Standards by recognizing and planning to offset and write down the impending government pension and healthcare liabilities that were ignored for four years – while pretending we had an operating surplus. We need to take responsibility for the tens of millions we pay to support Cayman Airways and the Turtle Farm, while ignoring the GT and Brac Dumps and an unfinished JGHS.

Moses and PPM need to stop kowtowing to Giora Isreal (Carnival’s longtime SVP Port & Destination Group) who alone contends that Cayman will be “out of the Cruise ship business” without a deep water port facility. His heavily-biased old dogma senior citizen opinion is simply not valid. Nor is it true that liners are getting bigger and bigger for our region – the order book speaks otherwise. All of the bigger class ships on order are destined for Asia/Antipodes including Carnival’s.

The best coalition would be Ezzard for Speaker of the House, Mr Moses for Premier, Suckoo for Deputy Premier, Arden for Minister of Roads etc, Roy for Financial Minister, Alden for the Financial Industry (where Wayne was) and Ms Julie and Tara for the other two Ministerial positions.

He will negotiate with Alden or Arden for Deputy Premier.

    Holy hakadooli, this is exciting.

Congratulations to Christopher Saunders for his win in BTW. I hope he is chosen as our next Minister of Finance as he is well qualified to do so and to represent our beloved Cayman Islands.

Whatever happens, the loss of Marco “Smoke And Mirrors” Archer is not a bad thing.

    • Unison says:

A great win indeed! ? … the district spoke loud and clear who they wanted!

      • Anonymous says:

Really, Unison? KB won by around 32 votes and over 200 people didn’t vote! What a shame on GTC and Dr. T!

Don’t mollocate the bloke before he has begun. (It’s a Scottish word.)

West Bayas what happened. Mac this is a very strong message. The UDP CDP or whatever the name change is..is finished.

    • Unison says:

I think its done for Mckeeva Bush. He should be Independent or resign. His days of leadership are over

    • Anonymous says:

Unfortunately we still have do nothing whatsoever but collect my very large paycheck whogene on the payroll for another four years. West Bayas are a complete disgrace to politics in this country.

      • Anonymous says:

West Bay is a prime example of politics most negative glaring examples! Decisiveness, Manupilative, Opportunism, Crassisim, Character Assassination , Immoral Behavior, Selfish, Humanistic Destructive, Environmental Destructive, Greed, Social Decay, lliteracy. These are the subjects that is being offered at the the West Bay political College for the next four years. The faculty body that will be teaching these subjects is called CDP headed by none other than (professor the biggest bush) that the soil of West Bay has grown, with over thirty years experience in these disciplines. Who did not sign up on the 24th need to hurry up because classes are about to start!

    • Anonymous says:

God sees. God knows. West Bayers should be left alone to elect their own gowerment and run their own hell hole.

    • Anonymous says:

Let’s hope Mac is kept out of any government as he will only do what he does best….disrupt and divert .

    • Anonymous says:

Them old head Bayas too fool…they believe any empty promise.

Where has Eugene…Bernie and Keeva been the past few years that’s they been back benching….they will learn though.

West bay will continue to need serious rehabilition as a district – insanity is conducting same actions with expectancies varied for different results.

Let’s not predict too quick on that, with what Alden (the coward) pulled off to get a seat, he will get an IND to go PPM side so that he will be Premier again.

    • Unison says:

He still has 7 but 3 he needs to form a government! Thats not easy to get. Also INDEPENDENTS are more likely to hold their ground.

    • Anony says:

This was preplaned with just minor skewing to the results. Alden knows all too well….Marco you jobless lol? Welcome to ‘our’ Cayman1

    • Anonymous says:

Tara seemed to be hesistating on going back to Ministry of Education when they asked her last night. She is possibly considering breaking ranks with PPM,especially if she can get a better position with a coalition government.

    • Anonymous says:

I think we will see Arden as Premier, the question is whether the other Ministers will be made up of all Independents and CDP or PPM. Mac can decide where he wants his support. Or you could get a situation with an Independent led PPM coalition. Arden as Premier with Alden as Deputy, in that scenario you could get Chris and Roy as Minister of Financial Services and Minister of Finance.

Lots of options and plenty negotiations still to go for sure.

  50. Anonymous says:

Arden will be the new Premier.

A Christian fundamentalist state. With the emphasis on mentalist.

    • Unison says:

Well … he will have to go through men like Austin Harris, Christopher Saunders, and Anthony Eden to get the support. Arden is not the only one with leadership qualities. ?

    • Anonymous says:

Moses please. The only sensible one left.

    • Anonymous says:

Arden and Ezzard need to be kept out of government at all costs. Their brand of extremism would be a catastrophe for Cayman.

    • frangipani says:

Mercy! In that case I hope someone teaches him how to speak the Queen’s English!!
