(CNS Elections): Isaac Rankine, a new face on the political scene, has announced his intention to run for office as an independent candidate in East End. The local IT expert is the first candidate in the 2017 campaign to challenge the incumbent, Arden McLean, who has held the seat since 2000. Rankine kicked-off his political campaign with an event in the constituency at the weekend, where he told voters that no one owns the seat.

A former manager with Cable & Wireless, Rankine now owns an IT consultancy but said he had been planning his bid for office for over two years. He said, “As an Independent candidate, I am prepared to work on your behalf with the democratically elected government to ensure that East End is no longer perceived to be the district that is left behind.”

Planning to talk with his would-be constituents in small yard meetings, Rankine has a functional and informative website and has launched what appears to be a relatively organised campaign for a political novice and fully independent candidate.

Although Cayman is about to enter its first ever election under the system of one man, one vote in single member constituencies, East End is one of only two seats that have always been single-member constituencies. It is the largest geographical district but it has the second smallest number of voters on Grand Cayman, at 719 compared to 717 in North Side its neighbour. The two districts in the Sister Islands are the two smallest districts by numbers overall.

McLean has confirmed he will be standing for the fifth time in the district in the hope of retaining his seat, but he and Rankine are unlikely to be the only two runners. The PPM is planning to field a candidate in the district and other independents as well as a possible CDP candidate may choose to make a bid for the seat.

Issac is a very decent, intelligent and sensible man. It is a such shame that there aren’t two seats for East End, both he and Arden would have worked well together for the community and the Islands.

Best of luck to you, Issac!

Issac Rankine is a descent and intelligent young man who I have known for many years.

He has given much of his time to our community especially with his IT skills at the Harquail Theatre for the past 25 years or so.

I just wish he was running in West Bay Central where I’m supposed to be voting – but I do understand his roots are strong in the East End district.

    Good Luck Issac !!

Love the freudian slip. Election time brings out a lot of eat-enders, and drink-enders, and $25-enders.
