(CNS): Updated 4:45: Jessie Perry, who was very badly burned in a major car crash just over two weeks ago, has died at the burns unit in the Jamaican hospital where she was airlifted last week. The 21-year-old woman was in critical condition with burns over 80% of her body after the car she was travelling in flipped over and then burst in to flames. The 32-year-old driver of the car, who was burned over 20% of his body and remains in hospital, has been arrested for causing death by dangerous driving but police confirmed he has not yet been charged.

Perry is the ninth person to die after an accident on Cayman roads this year, which is turning out to be the worst year on record for traffic fatalities.

Perry had been out celebrating her 21st birthday when the black Audi she was in collided with the curb at the right hand bend on the West Bay Road by Public Beach in the early hours of 14 September. The car flipped over and ignited, which police believe was as a result of a ruptured fuel line. Perry and the driver were found by the burning car at the scene when police and emergency services arrived.

So much mention of Health Insurance in the above comments. Yes, i agree that everyone needs to be covered but we need to be practical. A domestic worker earns; let say CI$500 per month. After she spends on food, transportation, rent (not live in), send home for her family and miscellaneous; what is left for insurance which on an average costs CI$130 TO CI$200 p.m.?? People it is so obvious to me; we need a corporate group policy for these types of workers so they can pay a very minimum insurance premium (less than CI$50 p.m.). That is a solution and not beating up gums for nothing.

What? You cannot be serious !! This is exactly why the Cayman Islands need a minimum wage. No one should be making $600 per month and be expected to pay rent, health insurance and I am sure for this poster, the illegal repayment of work permit expenses.

Shame. Will government now insist that temporary workers now have health insurance -and medicals? Life/death is no respecter of persons.

The most hateful, ignorant and zealous people must be living in Cayman. Condolences to the family of this young woman, may her soul rest in peace. People, the survival rate for such a case is slim to none and if she had survived, what would be her quality of life after this ordeal, God knows best and no amount of money to privide the best medical care in this world would have saved her if God saw it fit to receive her young soul. XXXXX

CNS: Please note that the driver has been arrested so no comments about him are allowed.

They should of sent her right away if she were a local she would of been flown to Miami

You should not speculate without the facts.

She was young and looked healthy which is a big plus. What we don’t know if she had inhalation injury or the depth of the burns.
Given the 80% burns & her age gives her a baux index of 101. If inhalation is involved then 118.
Anything below 140 it is now possible to survive. What hasn’t been mentioned is any injuries from the crash itself. We don’t know what her SOFA or SAPS II scores were on admission.
Without knowing these it is impossible to have a good guess of her true chances.

It should also be noted that she cannot be transported until she is stabilized. No air ambulance service takes the risk. Obviously they did manage to stabilize her for transport but that’s all we know.
It fine to be armchair specialists but without the full picture it is impossible. Only the HSA A&E doctors and whichever specialist dealt with her know these figures and no doubt the coroner will now know. Wait for the inquest before judging. Having insurance doesn’t mean everything when the issues are horrific.

With that sympathy for the family and may she RIP.

And you know that she had a visa and health insurance coverage?

My sincere condolences to her family and friends. A terrible loss and although I don’t know the young lady, a loss of life through an accident is never easy to comprehend.

In regards to the insurance. CINICO only take new clients twice a year. So although the law says you have to be insured. CINICO will turn you away if it’s not within the two months out of the year. This needs to change. If the law states you have to have insurance, then there should be no limitations.

Regardless of insurance, every individual deserves the best care regardless of insurance, when it comes to trying to save a life.

Always sad to see such an early end to a life. Do not let this be forgotten nor let the people responsible for the accident and lack of insurance go unpunished.

rest in peace. She may be alive if the government install crash barrier on the bend by public beach. It will stop cars flying off the road due the people can’t drive due going too fast. I have seen few cars went off at that bend. Again government is saving money for their fat paychecks.

I feel very sad about this. Many people were doing all they could for her survival. I wish I could say something to make those who loved her feel better, but words fall short in times like these. I’m sorry it happened this way. Deeply sorry.

Sincere condolences to the family of this young girl, it is very sad. Its got to the stage where people are afraid to go out in the evenings by driving or taxi, because its highly likely that some idiot/drunk driver might kill or injure them. I was driving home a couple of weeks ago on Friday 11th September, around midnight, feeling very vulnerable and hoping that nobody would smash into me. There were crazy drivers everywhere. I got to Shamrock Rd and it had been closed by the police due to a bad accident. Next day I saw that the stone wall near Ocean Club had been smashed up and there were road markings for two cars. Anyone know what happened in this one??

    • OC Resident says:

One car rear-ended another, sending both into the wall. Luckily no one in that accident was injured that I know of.

Condolences to the friends & family of this young woman. I agree it is a dangerous decision to be on the roads on a weekend night, in certain places. You never know when the racers / just plain crazy drivers will appear. It never used to be this way though, so something needs to change with police presence on our roads. My wife & I actually make a conscious decision to not be on the roads on a weekend night after 10:30 pm, even that is pushing it a bit late now.

      • Good governance says:

Sad part is I am terrified driving my children home or to school in broad daylight … The amount of cars that fly past (and I am at the speed limit already) is shocking. They tail and weave and race and we have to brace ourselves for it daily. Oh for the daily presence of a cop car to mitigate this behaviour like we saw in the 80s.

    • Anonymous says:

There is no safe time of day….try living directly off of Shamrock Road! People are racing and driving crazy all times of the day…

  12. Cassius says:

Sad. Very sad. Such a tragic loss of young human life. May God grant peace to those who loved her.

  13. Anonymous says:

So from now on a police officer on every corner of the street to take these drivers off the road permanently.
Every day i get tailed by these idiots, dangerous overtaking and speeding.
    Speed checks everywhere please.

If this poor lady was on a work permit, why didn’t she have health insurance as the law requires?

    • Anonymous says:

Based on reports appears she was on a temporary. I think only one year permit need to have insurance

      • Anonymous says:

Not true. And anyway, I believe she was here for longer than the 6 month maximum time permitted on a temporary.

      • CaymanIslands3 says:

It is instances like these when there is no money to help people especially expats that has contribute to our community. We have to do better. A community pay-roll tax (which will not hurt the financial industry) but be useful in helping the needy and charitable cause was proposed. But sadly I believe the tax fear-mongering crew, squashed this useful/charitable fee from happening. The fee could have helped everyone, just a certain amount from our salaries to help those vulnerable in our society.

      • Good governance says:

Every legal resident here, including on a temporary permit, should have health insurance coverage. It’s the law.

        • Anonymous says:

Just as with the pensions, for some it is the law for others it is business as usual with no repercussions.

    • Anonymous says:

Tragically the lack of health insurance may well have contributed to her passing. When are we going to enforce our laws? When people die! This beautiful land is degenerating into an effing joke! I am saddened, angered and disgusted. Will anyone act now? For one family it will always be too little, too late, but perhaps you can stop it from happening again.

      • Anonymous says:

Respectfully, the survival rate with 80% burns is so slim, having the money of Rockefeller, Vanderbilt, Onasis and Trump wouldn’t make a dent in that probability. Great Insurance purchases expensive but futile care. Human Physiology doesn’t respect money

        • Anonymous says:

That may be true, but the acceptance by this society of substandard (and unlawful) of foreign domestic workers (and others) must end.

    • Ellie says:

No insurance would have saved a person with 80% body burns. May she rest in peace.

    • Anonymous says:

Moron – $500 or $600 per month will not allow you to have medical insurance! Wake up, your head is the sand..

My heart sunk when I read this headline. My condolences go out to her family and friends. What a heartbreaking story. Rest in peace, Ms. Perry.

      • Cass says:

How can someone call you or anyone else a “troll” for paying your respects? And 3 people did that. Just plain bizarre really. RIP to the beautiful young lady who tragically lost her life on these hellish roads with some of the worst drivers in the entire world.
