Cayman Islands courts, Grand Cayman

(CNS): Nadia Miranda Powery pleaded guilty Friday to stealing over US$400,000 from her former employer, Cayman Villas, between November 2015 and December 2016, when she worked there as an accountant. Powery was charged with several counts of theft as well as obtaining property by deception and forgery relating to cheques she paid to herself. Despite admitting to stealing a significant amount of cash, Powery, who is from Bodden Town, was bailed to return to court later this month, when one outstanding charge which she has not yet answered will be addressed and a sentencing date set.

With Powery’s travel documents already surrendered to the court, the crown accepted a $10,000 surety and did not object to bail until sentencing, when the local woman is expected to face jail time, given the amount of money stolen.

  1. Would state my name but the BAD MIND on here is real! says:

After reading most of these comments I am disgusted, Not only by the actions of Nadia but by the senseless comments of many who obviously were very close to her. These people must have been some type of friend to her once, yes you have all right speak on your disgust of her actions, on the disappointment you feel, what the hell express your pity for her and her children but to dig a hole deeper and speak so low on a person you once were friends woth Don’t speak highly of you, it show a special breed of “BAD MIND” You are no better than her if this is what you say of someone you obviously called a friend. Yes she completely ruin her live and possibly the lives of her children but she is handling this with grace, which starts with admitting your wrongs. Nadia, I don’t know you but I feel for you and your children, it’s unfortunate that this is a situation that you have placed yourself in but like they say when you are this low, the only way to go is up. I will pray you continue to endure this as gracefully as you have been and I will say a special prayer for the “BAD MIND” that is all over this page!! Good luck as may God be with you!

How could this happen in the private sector. I am sure the money was not stolen in a day. I keep reading on CNS about good the private sector is and the civil service is not good.

But from my reading and research the private sector is much worse than the civil service. Again how could this happen in the private sector.

If you say it can happen anywhere. Which I agree with. Then don’t ever Criticize the civil service again.

She was the accountant so of course she hid her theft! They probably found out when they did the audit. You will always be found out and an accountant should know better! She should have her license yanked so can’t do it to anyone else.

Small companies are extremely challenged. The principals often wear multiple hats trying to grow their dream. They fall victim to people who gain their trust as they’re in great need of someone to help them. The thief often goes above and beyond to appear as a helping hand. Eager and helpful, gaining trust daily, and weekly until they gain the access to the money and other resources.
People like these are like baby sitters who turn out to be child molesters.
They should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

It doesn’t seem like this is her first rodeo. So, how come other employers who may have experienced her “sticky fingers” didn’t warn others? Are references no longer used?

Yes they are but references are mainly vague statements about how long a person worked at said business. Details about why they “left” are usually not included.

6:40pm That is such a load of cr@#….. This woman flaunted her “good fortune” and lived the high life, driving fancy sport cars, buying motorbikes, going on trips, buying a house, and her house looked like a best buy! She didn’t spend a penny on so called “desperation”. She is a mother of many and she didn’t give 2 thoughts to her kids during this time. Even if she was desperate you don’t steal from people like this. $400,000 wasn’t enough for her so then she had to go steal $40,000 plus from Saxon. I see she has fooled another.

Maybe her baby daddy should have gotten off his butt and gotten and job, but instead he has been charged with numerous crimes himself. Just look it up on the cause list in the court system; gambling, drugs, stolen property etc.

Check the small print when you open a bank account or ask your bank now what their policy is on forged signatures and them not doing their due diligence on behalf of their customers when there is suspicious, unusual activity. You will be shocked

Yes. When I opened my account years ago, there was a blurb about [the bank] not will not be held responsible for any transfers of money by me or anyone purporting to be me. That’s a rough paraphrase. I simply lined that out, and initialed it. The agreement was signed, and I was given a copy. Days later I was contacted and asked to fill out a new agreement, as changes weren’t allowed. I refused.

These agreements are a contract. You have the right to amend a contract, and the other entity has a right to accept or refuse it. I just got lucky that the BM was careless. That doesn’t mean that I am protected in any way if my funds suddenly disappear, as none of the accounts in the Cayman Islands are insured.

Companies need to stop the “no prosecution” practice and check references every time – whether local or foreign, it’s not complicated. For some reason the banks in particular think it’s embarrassing or that it shows they don’t have enough controls in place & therefore don’t prosecute – people will always find a way to steal if they want it enough, no amount of internal controls will prevent theft. But shame is one of the biggest deterrents of all so how about doing your civic duty & pressing charges.

Sorry but some Jamaican nationals and pr holders of Jamaican descent aren’t the only ones committing crimes here. Haven’t you stopped to think she could also be a caymanian married to a Caymanian ? Who said she was even married at all ? The fact remains that whomever commits crime within these islands ruin it for all of us, local or expat. There are other ways to address the issues facing the Cayman Islands right now without being discriminatory towards one group of people without knowing the facts. And that goes for the trolls citing deportation order at every disappointing headline, because not every person convicted of crime in the Cayman Islands is caymanian.

Did her employers take some time to notice the theft or is this yet another example of the wheels of justice crawling along at a snail’s pace. Recently we have seen a number of guilty pleas which avoid the necessity to prepare a case for prosecution but at the cost of reducing the defendant’s sentence by a third.Hopefully the CPS under new leadership will now improve their delivery of justice.

Who knows how may other ppl she worked for in the meantime. There is Office Supply and Saxon(we all know she stole from Saxon) wonder if she stole from Office Supply as well. Good for Cayman Villas and Saxon for bringing this serial criminal to justice. This woman needs to be stopped. The worst part about it is because she pled guilty they will automatically reduce her sentence by 33% and then they will properly reduce its further because she has children. She should get 10+ yrs for her crimes but will probably be out in 2yrs and right back at it….. I see comments from ppl who are shocked to see her in the news. She is a Master manipulator and has fooled many.
Sadly Cayman Villas and Saxon will never see a penny back, but they did something about it regardless of the possible damage to their reputations. Someone had to put a halt to her ways…… Alleged companies she has stolen from: Office Supply, Rubis, Westin, Digicel……. Confimed companies: Cayman Villas and Saxon.

How do they manage to get away with for so long. Is there ever an audit done. Pay an auditor to audit your businesses every year, Doesn’t matter whether she is Bodden Towner, CAymanian or not, they need to have to forfeit everything they own and spend a long time in prison. They are only making it harder for the rest of us who desperately need employment.

Apparently either she was very good at hiding the fraud or there were no audits.

Not everyone can afford an auditor, especially very small businesses.

If this small business made enough to have $400k to steal, it made enough to afford an auditor.

You obviously have no idea how long it takes a small business to save up over $400,000 in profit. Most small businesses are not audited and if some are, they are probably worked on long after the year end. It isn’t an instant process you know!

And the Westin, Rubis, Digicel and others. But no one wanted to be in the press so they let her go without charging her. Because of this she was able to continue her thieving ways

12.05 and now, all of those business should get together and write a letter to the Judge. She needs to do some hard time! Honestly. I’ve counted 5 businesses so far that she’s stolen from, and it wasn’t small sums of money. Pretty sure there are others!

Many large companies who would be investigated by their larger corporate entities just do nothing. Self preservation often trumps justice.

12.05pm if all this is true she needs some serious prison time even with her third off, as this is the only wat to stop her stealing.
