Suspect arrested for setting fire to GTN candidate’s van
(CNS): Police have arrested a 38-year-old man from George Town in relation to an incident of arson. A taxi-van owned by Romellia Welcome, who ran in George Town North in the April elections, was set ablaze in front of her home yesterday. A man was caught on CCTV footage, which was widely circulated on social media, throwing fuel on the van, having apparently set it on fire.
The van was parked outside Welcome’s home on July Street in Windsor Park. Police said that shortly before 2:30am on Tuesday, 10 June, they received a report of the fire, which appeared to have been deliberately started. The Cayman Islands Fire Service attended the scene and extinguished the fire. No one was injured during the incident.
Police officers later arrested a George Town man, who is known to the owner of the vehicle, on suspicion of arson. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
Unofficial sources have suggested the man is a close family member. There has been no indication from the police that the attack was related to Welcome’s work in the community.
The well known local community activist, who works as a taxi driver, was defeated in the election by Opposition Leader Joey Hew

@251 pm i hope you are not making this assumption on the fact that he is a Ebanks, there are many Jamaicans with the sir name Ebanks, I can tell you don’t know this fact , having said this I’m a born caymanian and I will be the first to admit most of the crimes committed in these islands are by caymanians, Jamaicans like all other nationalities here the majority are making an honest living, and not here to commit crimes
This is horrible, especially if it was done by someone close to Ms Welcome as is being suggested here. Whomever it is should be sent to jail or a mental institution.
Why was my comments not posted? But you post a pile of junk, ignorance and garbage.
CNS: Your comment was posted before I left the house (about 3:30-3:45 — I got back about 5:30), certainly at least an hour before this one. You can see it here. I suspect you needed to refresh the page.
Why is it that every time a criminal act is committed in Cayman, the response is something about Jamaica? Is it because we don’t want to admit that Caymanians commit crime? The majority of crime committed in the Cayman Islands is committed by Caymanians and we need to stop lying to ourselves and scapegoating other nationalities. Unofficial sources suggest it “might’ have been a family member which then makes the victim Jamaican. Or was the victim Caymanian?
By the way, I know we were not taught much Caribbean History in our days at School, but look at your skin and ask yourselves, or your elders: Where did this brown, or black, or mulatto or mixed colour come from? I don’t think it came from Europe. It was from Jamaica or Latin America, so don’t blame “them” for who we have become. Blame yourself and ourselves! Stop pretending that everyone else besides “us” commit crimes.
The black colour comes from African countries, part of that history you mentioned.
While there is some truth to your opinion the fact remains that the majority of drugs and guns in Cayman come from Jamaica.
Ask yourself is this why “Every time a criminal act is committed in Cayman, the response is something about Jamaica?”
The fact that he commented good morning with an angel emoji right under his mother’s comment on CMR’s live this morning was pure comedy.
Retribution fires are a Cayman classic.
Everybody knew who it was from the start and they made it sound like a random act. It be your own family.
I can see definitely the Jamaican Culture infiltrating the Cayman Islands. More is yet to come if we don’t have an effective Police Force to combat these horrific crimes which is slowly seeping into the Cayman Islands. Bring back robust Beat Patrol. Too many cases now going unsolved. If we continue on this path we will be heading down a train wreck. NCFC please implement new legislatures to combat crime. Please don’t let our Beloved Cayman Islands to be placed on the State Advisory List.
Kurt you and your Senior ranks need to take more draconian measures to tackle crime. However if it has become overwhelming seek help from other Jurisdictions excepting Jamaica. You can secondment Consultants, Policy Advisors had High Ranking Police Officers who can handle the situation. It’s not getting better it is getting worse. Proper training is lacking and that’s why there’s a public outcry concerning these high profile cases. Back in the 80s and 90s we had less officers, minimal equipments, modern technology was non-existent, but we got the job done and secured convictions. Start to do a reality check Kurt, soon we might be coming prisoners in our own homes.
“Prisoners in our own homes”…..That’s what Jamaica is suffering, and Jamaicans are bringing that to Cayman.
Stop Jamaicans from gaining power to do that to Cayman . Just one Jamaican JP has the power to rubber stamp the bredren’s scams and fake marriages, PR and Status applications without asking questions.
Identify and weed out.
Women can’t even walk the streets anymore in the Cayman Islands when they become targets, ambushed, mugged and robbed. It’s a crying shame, women will now have to stay in confinement if their homes. The day when a high profile woman or a female Tourist experiences this and get killed then everybody will be running around like a headless chicken.
I thought Estella and Judyann cases were eye openers. It’s plain and simple hire people who can get the job done. It is evident the RCIPS is not properly trained and equipped to handle high profile cases. It’s just pure confusion and miscommunications happening.
Pretty sure the Ebanks that was freed in RCIPS station arson attack wasn’t a Jamaican.
How sure?

Cayman is Draconian enough as it is already, no Thank you.
Could be personal, shit happens. But I hope it’s not related to her community efforts or political foray.
We don’t need to go there!
Arson attacks aren’t random. This isn’t “shit happens”, this is a targeted crime.
