(CNS): The state opening for the new session of parliament will take place on Wednesday, 25 June. The meeting will be held under the new Standing Orders that were passed at the end of the last administration, which include Question Time with the premier for the first time in the Cayman Islands. The new orders introduce fixed days and new hours for parliament to sit, as well as a two-month recess in the summer.

At the State Opening, which will begin at 2pm, Governor Jane Owen will deliver the Throne Speech, and Members of Parliament will review and table several annual reports from various government entities. The government is also planning to present several bills, including the Churches Incorporation (Amendment) Bill, 2025; Virtual Asset (Service Providers) (Amendment) Bill, 2025; Public Service Management (Amendment) Bill, 2025; and the Public Management and Finance (Amendment) Bill, 2025.

Dozens of questions have been submitted by members of the opposition, some of which will be included in the new Question Time. This will be a regular 30-minute feature that allows members to ask more general questions about the government’s performance. A 15-minute slot for Urgent Questions will also be available at each sitting, enabling members to raise pressing matters of public interest.

Members of the public can tune into the proceedings live via the CIGTV YouTube channel or Radio Cayman. They can also view the proceedings from the public gallery at the House of Parliament after signing in with security.

Can we get the 2024 Financial Statements from Cayman Airways, so we can find oy how much they cost the taxpayer last year. In 2023 it was somewhere between 30 and 40 million dollars!.

As much as it may “cost us”, take away Cayman Airways and say good bye to affordable affair. We will be held hostage to all the foreign airlines who (sans competition) will have a field day fleecing us. Go and look up how much a ticket to Turks and Caicos goes for. Find out what happened to airfares into Jamaica when they sold AirJamaica. KX is among the top 15 of the world’s best international airlines, so try being proud about it for a change!

Honestly, of all the government assistance to companies that gets handed out, Cayman Airways is the least of my worries. I view them them as a guaranteed emergency plan. Remember Ivan? Cayman Airways was the only way many people could evacuate and the only way many people who were stranded abroad could get back.

They have to, by law, provide those evacuation and repatriation flights and I’m pretty ok with funding that.

Read the Constitution. Parliament is not expected to meet every day, every week or every month… As long as they meet the constitutional quota, they can take a break and summer is the most logical time to do so.

PACT did not reach the constitutional quota because they had no idea what they were doing and you all voted in PACT 2.0 😂

This government is the best I’ve seen in 20 years. If they just keep trying to stay true we might see some amazing things happen.

However, their harsh immigration stance is wrong.

2:03, I think he will likely be a good Speaker. But I recall when he was on the backbenches he harshly criticized certain MLAs as they were then called who were collecting parliamentary pensions PLUS a salary …..double dipping as he ( and others) called it. Anthony Eden ad McKeeva Bush were examples. So now Mr Miller is collecting a HUGE salary for being Speaker, will he give up his pension or donate it to charity as he wanted others to do……..?

I believe the people will get objective and frank, if not ideal answers, from our capable Premier, not Juju-style, obviously clueless, “I am reliably informed” bull manure. Every MP should know their subject matter enough that they can answer broad questions. Operational, HR, Procurement matters justify consultation with Chief Officers; beyond such, MPs should do their homework. Equally, we need to learn to interpret information so we can question our MPs on the ground. Democracy must grow in the grass roots .

I am still waiting patiently to get Cinico Coverage amongst others in the over 65s uncovered by Cinico. I have been advocating for several weeks now under various Government Headings on CNS platform, which appears to be falling on deaf ears. What is the New Govt stance to tacking crime which seems not to be priority. Other issues have been addressed so far but nothing on these two issues. Let’s wait then until June 25th 2025.

Maybe try advocating directly to your MP instead of anonymous comments on a news site? Lot harder for them to say no to your face in person.

See another Murder in West Bay in broad daylight, which could result in retaliation. New Govt again what is your stance on Crime? I can recall under the previous Caymanian Commissioner Crime soared under his watch which resulted in him stepping down. I am wondering if this a repetition again under this Caymanian Commissioner. I can see the trend. Seems to me Cayman doesn’ do well with a local COP. Seek outside Help until things cool down. Not looking good Cayman!

I love how Alden runs the least accountable (to Parliament) government I can recall, suspending every standing order to push through any and everything, and then he leaves the new requirement to answer questions on the spot to others. Premier’s Question Time is a great addition but we needed it 2013-2021 when everything not bolted down and the ground under it was being sold and given away by his administrations. I am so glad he is on his farm now where he kept pretending to want to be, when you just know he was *really* enjoying those robes.

Just what was given away under Alden in 2013 to 2021?
Was it the 3000 + unjustified status grants?
      The West Bay Road?
      Safe Haven water ways?
There are too many voters who believe having their “Say” is important but not having knowledge of what the Government is doing.

Well, Dart asked him to create a legal framework allowing them to own the air above land and he did it.

Do you think anyone else could have achieved that so easily? The ability to own THE AIR?!

This is nothing new. Maybe step into the real world instead of staying on this rock and you will know that’s how it is in many countries.

I can just imagine in an alternate reality if the PPM were holding this Q&A session. Questions would be met by a blank stares, followed by much stuttered waffle from Mega Developer, pwned Boy Blunder and copious buffoonery and whining from PPM’s drama queen in chief.
This new development however is major step forward in Cayman politics and refreshing positive change. I hope that the sore losers in the PPM don’t attempt to torpedo it.

So are you suggesting that if the PPM hold the Goverment to account they will be sulking and throwing shade? Let just establish the standards you expect from now, are they to sit quietly and say nothing ?

8:25am: The PPM should stick to the facts. The Premier is advocating for a conciliatory rather than adversarial approach. In other words, “Can we all just get along?!” Understand that the voters are *tired* of the opposition being confrontational all the time instead of seeking common ground to solve the country’s problems. If anyone should be held accountable is the PPM, for selling our land and encouraging imported low wage labour in the mid-2000s, even when people were waving red flags like crazy.
