Coastguard formally ends efforts to find reporter

(CNS): The Cayman Islands Coast Guard has ended the active search at sea for local TV reporter Andrel Harris, who was reported missing on Wednesday, 4 June. Officials said that, in line with the International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue manual, “the suspension of activity indicates that all reasonable search areas have been thoroughly covered, all available resources have been utilised, and there is no longer a reasonable expectation of locating the missing person alive.”

While active surface and aerial search efforts have concluded, authorities have said that they will continue to monitor for any new information or developments that might assist the investigation.

“This difficult decision follows exhaustive efforts over several days, including the deployment of multiple assets and personnel across extensive maritime and coastal zones. Regrettably, it has now been determined that continued active search operations are unlikely to result in the recovery of the missing individual,” the CICG said.

Harris was last seen on Tuesday, 3 June, around 9:30pm, walking along Pedro Castle Road in Savannah. The coastguard said their thoughts remain with his family and loved ones at this profoundly difficult time.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is urged to call 911, as the RCIPS continues its enquiries to establish what happened to Harris.

My sympathies to the family. If the old JMU was still in operation at least there would have been closure and not excuses, cowardice, inexperience and failures…..
The current MLA’s know the current CICG leadership is a community joke. Failures and cowards.. Do the MLA’s have the integrity to make changes, doubtful.
The experienced personell left in 2021 because they knew the ineptness of the current leadership.
As is now the current CICG could not find the Titanic sitting on top of Owens Island…

They had time to show off on facebook posting video of them jumping waves and sending the boat 85 degrees up in the air though.

Should’ve told them he had ganja on him. Maybe then they would’ve taken the task seriously.

My heart goes out to Andrel Harris’s mother and family. I feel your pain.

To this day my heart still aches for my brother and it’s been over 40 + years. My brother drowned in the Spott’s area in 1977 when I was just 14 years old and I am now 64. It seems like yesterday. I am still traumatised to this very day. When the divers went out in the water off Spott’s dock at around 3:00pm (accident happened at around 12:00noon) He had already drifted towards the South Sound area and was ready to go off into the drop off when he was found. Maybe my family is one of the lucky ones. My point is that the Police Divers and CICG should have been deployed in the water on the Wednesday morning after he went missing, and they could have done land searches after weather conditions deteriotted and they may have found him alive or his body may have been found. Time is of the essence in situations like this.

I did not know Andreal personally but he seemed to be a very nice and down to earth soul from what I saw on live TV coverage during the 2025 Elections. It’s not a day that goes by that I do not think of what could have been if things were done differently. At least his mother and family would have some type of closure.

God Bless his mum and his family and may Andrel’s soul rest in eternal peace. God only takes the best for his Rose garden.
God looked around his Garden and found an empty place.
He then looked down upon this earth and saw your loving face.
He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest.
His Garden must be beautiful, he always takes the best.
He knew that you were in pain.
And knew that you would never get well on earth again.
He saw your path was difficult, he closed your tired eyes,
He whispered to you “Peace be Thine” and gave you wings to fly.

I say this with complete sincerity and respect for the memory of the deceased and his family: what does it say about us as a society when the search for Spikey the dog lasted longer and drew more community involvement than the search for this young man? Where were the sniffer dogs, the drones, and the widespread community support in his case? The same questions arise when I remember the woman who went missing at the dump a few years ago.

You obviously were not involved in any searching for Andrel. The number of people, vessels, divers, drones, etc used for this search was very high. You may have seen wealthy people paying more to advertise a reward for a missing dog, but you did not see more people actively searching for that dog than you did Andrel.

Is your life so good that you have to make up shit to be upset about?

I understand what you mean, but I think the search for Spikey lasted longer because his owner paid for so many ads and he paid for the drones etc. He wouldn’t give up. I don’t know if that was because the community cared more in that instance.
I think there was some closure for the owner in the end.

I do understand the frustration that you mean that we are not trying more. For me personally, I didn’t know how to help as I don’t own a boat or jet ski. I think I saw someone else post that they wanted to help look on their walks near Ocean Club, but didn’t know what to look for.

I do hope that there is some closure on this and I agree for the poor woman who was never found at the dump, but I don’t think that this is because the community didn’t care, but more of how do we help.

Perhaps having a team that can communicate sensitively to the public could be helpful in letting them know what to look out for without disrupting an investigation.

Seriously? No one was looking for Spikey in the sea with divers and drones. Helicopters, etc. Someone could have the dog but who is kidnapping a human and not asking for something.Government wasn’t looking for Spikey, his owners were. Need I go on to what a ridiculous comparison.

And the young Jamaican lady, believe disappeared around Pedro. The banker. Lady from car park at restaurant. Please remember more, They should be remembered, never mibd ‘Hero Square’ for overpaid, some corrupt, politricians, should
be a wall to remember those taken away by drunk drivers, and all others above.

People in the Cayman Islands should not be disappearing never to be seen again.

There are some people who are sick, attitudes and
      revengeful.

We should not be ruled, loved ones taken by these ‘we are bIg’arseholes, Cayman, Jamaican or any other. You think you are big on a small Island, yiyr comlatriits are crying in Belmarsh to come home. Babies can’t take it!

Get them out and keep them out of Cayman, Caymanians as others do not want you here destroying oyr Islands.
