(CNS): A student escaped unscathed from a minor collision in the car park of the John Gray High School on Wednesday after cycling into the path of a car entering the campus, driven by one of the teachers. According to the Department of Education Services, the minor motor vehicle incident occurred at around 8:00am, when the student crossed in front of the car. Although the teacher took “quick evasive action”, his car hit the bicycle, knocking the student off.

The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded promptly, and neither the student nor the teacher was injured. Officials thanked the EMS team for their swift response and urged students and motorists to remain vigilant and exercise an abundance of caution, particularly in and around school zones.

Teachers have been working miracles in the classroom. How could this teacher work a miracle to C-L-A-I-R-V-O-Y-A-N-T-L-Y PREVENT the child from riding into the path of the car? C’mon!

The use of the road is EVERYONE’S responsibility. This includes pedestrians.

I’m extremely happy that both are ok.

Quote: The Department is encouraging all students, staff, and motorists to prioritize safety, especially during peak arrival and dismissal times.
I want to add to this by saying that ALL drivers entering a school compound should be expected to follow ‘the rules of the road’ and set a good example to all road users, especially pedestrians and students. This means that when an arrow on the road indicates that vehicles move in one direction only, then this is the rule of the road which should be followed by ALL road users.
Unfortunately, ignoring this rule is all too common, especially at CHHS, where an accident is waiting to happen.
How do we teach students to respect the law when we may be the very people who are breaking it.

There are actually painted green cycle lanes around JGHS designating it as a cycling area to expect cyclists. The teacher should understand that it is a school for kids, and should be expecting children. Motorists should always be prepared to stop, and giving space especially in a school yard – not relying upon their ability to take evasive action. This is the motorist’s fault. We need laws to ban these adult motorists from our roads for a year. Everything is backwards in Cayman, blaming kids on bikes at a school. This is also the RCIPS mentality that normalizes cyclist “misadventure” deaths.

You’re one of those parents whos kids never do wrong, right? This kid cycled into the drivers path, not saying he was pulling stunts but clearly the kid is at fault.

Ah, the health and safety cluster that is traffic around that area. You have crossings that are usually unsighted due to cars parking on, or up to them, for most of the day. Why even use the crossings, though? When you do see people crossing the road, they’re doing it everywhere but at the crossings.

“abundance of caution”, a legacy copy and paste term from COVID. Can we all agree to not ever use it again??? Please!

Why are we blaming the child victim on a bike at a school with painted bike lanes, and not the adult motorist that should properly know it’s a school zone and should be exercising extra caution, actively scanning the roadway and paths ahead for soccer balls, kids on bikes, kids on phones, etc? If there are adult motorists knocking kids off bikes with the front of their cars, they should loose their license for a year, at a minimum.

Because I don’t know if you have seen recently but it has become a foolish trend for them to do a wheelie towards oncoming cars and then swerve at the last minute. More to come.

Sure, but how does the motorist piloting the moving car not see this happening, calculate the wheelie glide path, and then stop their car before the impact? Motorists are supposed to have their eyes open, scanning ahead for this hazards, are they not?

you as a person rightfully driving on the road is willing to stop in the middle of the road to avoid someone doing something foolish and reckless? I say continue you driving and if they don’t move, they don’t more not your fault and you did not cause an accident, they did. Stop enabling and encouraging this behavior making them think it is okay with and can get away with something so reckless. and last time I checked we drive cars, not pilot them.
