School bus on wrong side of the road

(CNS): The driver of a school bus who was caught on camera driving on the wrong side of the road in order to beat the morning traffic in Red Bay last week has not only angered commuters and worried parents but has also caught the attention of the police. (See video below.) A spokesperson for the RCIPS Traffic Unit told CNS that they are taking steps to identify the driver involved and intend to prosecute.

“The type of manoeuvre the video shows is dangerous and illegal, and persons caught doing so risk losing their licence,” the traffic unit said. “Our officers will be attending the school to warn drivers against engaging in this type of driving behaviour, and if the driver is located, they will be prosecuted accordingly.”

The poor driving habits on local roads are well documented and illustrated by the number of crashes reported every day. But there are also concerns that road rage is on the rise. Tensions are mounting behind the wheel as people sit in endless traffic lines morning after morning as they make their way to work, and drivers attempting to beat the traffic queues by cutting off other vehicles fuel evermore anger and frustration.

Local social media pages are littered with dashcam footage of drivers behaving badly and adding to the near-permanent commuter chaos on local roads.

The traffic mess was exacerbated during the Friday evening rush hour on 18 November when the entire capital ground to a halt because the roads around the harbourfront were closed for the Pirates Fest activities, for which Premier Wayne Panton issued a national apology.

He also said that the government was going to address the unrestricted importation of cars as one way of managing the volume of traffic on the roads, in addition to plans to both widen existing roads and construct the controversial East-West Arterial extension.

“Caught the attention of the police”. Really! Wow, that’s nice. Were children in the bus? Track this person down, sack them from the job, and prosectute their ass for putting children’s lives at risk.

How many transport companies would be contracted to carry students to Red Bay on that day? How many possible drivers might there be? Could it be a dozen? Instead of calling those numbers, our crime fighters prefer to broadcast proof of their own logic impairment. It’s more unsettling than the bus driver.

If there weren’t 10, 15 or 20 accidents on any given day caused by moronic driving, on top of the other nonsense people call 911 for, maybe the traffic po-po would have more time to go patrol and see & prosecute these kind of infractions instead of going to deal with the scratch Karen got on her Land Rover while she was parked at Camana Bay.

Regarding the importation of cars. I moved from a 1 bed to a 2 bed recently. I still only sleep in one bed, still only use 1 bathroom at a time.

Impose a limit of a couple of imports every 2 or 3 years. Sure, people will game the system, but it’ll deter the casual entrepreneur who imports Honda Fit Hybrids and gives it the old “new to island” nonsense.

Old, unroadworthy vehicles need removing from the streets…but they’re not.

The main issue here is terrible traffic enforcement, with too many people having a lack of decent transportation options. The yellow bus driver is just a symptom of the stupidity.

want to control traffic. You don’t need to refuse car imports. Simply put the cameras on the top of patrol cars. who will automatically find the people who do not have a license or Insurance. I would bet my last dollar that 30% of the cars on the road are driving without insurance.

So this is what it takes to look closely at the drivers of these buses. How about for years, people saying these idiots stop in roundabouts, and hold up all traffic. Making traffic worse.

or they stop on a highway instead of turning off into the road, where they are letting kids off.

I came from a country where bussing kids was routine, and not ONCE did a bus stop on a highway to let kids off. they would turn into the side road, stop. let the kids off. then turn around and get back on the highway.

If we are supposed to stop and follow the rules not passing buses when they let children off. Why do they feel they should not follow the rules of the road themselves?

I have reported this exact thing and got nowhere. A school bus stopped on the ETH in front of the Kimpton and let kids off which is bad enough, then these kids ran across four lanes of traffic to get into Raleigh Quay instead of the driver getting off at the roundabout, dropping the kids then head back to WB.

They are telling us they have the bus on video. The bus must have a license plate, which would be registered to one unique vehicle, one bus owner, who has one authorized driver at a time, who they should be able to be locate in seconds with all this useful plate registration data. Why have license plates and retain this data if the police can’t figure out how that might be useful in helping them to locate those responsible and solve mysteries? Honestly, you have to wonder.

Exactly. It should not take more than 5 min to find the bus and the driver. Only in Cayman.

    • Anonymous says:

If you watch the video the plates are not visible. All pictures and videos of vehicles do not automatically show the license plate. Relax a bit they will locate the driver.

If it’s the same bus driver who stopped on a busy roundabout a few months back who I reported with the license plate then I suspect absolutely nothing will be done about it.

We all agree that we have third world standards of driving, therefore the police need to step up. Stop EVERY vehicle they see with no seatbelts being worn. This obvious infraction is not generally prosecuted. If they’re serious about reclaiming the roads, start with absolute basics.

The crapheaps on the road are not stopped despite this easy to spot offense. This easy ticket then makes people actually follow some other rules.

It’s so basic. Plus, with the inevitable crashes we have, it may even save some ingrate from a trip through some glass.

stopping or slowing importation of cars isn’t the problem. It’s that fact that a lot of older cars that have no business being on the road are still in use because of lax inspection rules and no enforcement of cars that are not licensed.

There is nothing wrong with driving an older car that’s in good shape, but many are not and should be removed from the road entirely. Increase vehicle license enforcement, double or even triple the cost of yearly licensing fees and you’ll see much less cars on the road.

The cost of licencing is already 5-10X the cost of other jurisdictions. On my piddly pension, it is a months pension to licence my old jalopy. Find another way to be punitive!

People come here and think they can drive like idiots!
Noooo police present here so why not!!!!!
    You can run red lights
Don’t have to stop at STOP signs
Don’t have to use your turn signal
    Tailgating here is ridiculous
Lets go 10mph under the speed limit
Cars all over that shouldn’t be on the road
Lets have a roadblock where people just turn around and the police do nothing lol
The roads here are really getting out of hand here!

The truly shocking part is that the RCIP sees this as a major incident. These things happen everyday, buses, trucks with unsecure loads, people passing on the right on the shoulder of the ETH, speeding, tailgating, and more general disregard for traffic laws given that the odds you will be stopped, ticketed and or arrested are next to zero.

You just need to spend 5 minutes on any road to witness total lawlessness.

The Cayman Islands Government has adopted fecklessness as its governance model.

Except for the signing away of ludicrous amounts of the public’s funds derived from one of the highest levels of indirect taxation on earth and cost of living burdens on earth, the RCIPS is not owned or controlled, directed by, or accountable to the CIG, let alone the electorate.

      There be the dichotomy.

Responsibility for the quality of law enforcement, and/or the woefully unacceptable lack thereof, lands squarely upon the Crown itself and not the CIG (civil service or elected).

I know its hard for you Colonialists to accept any given truth or to take any responsibility when it does not fit within the parameters of your dysphoria of conceit but facts are facts.

If you wish to broach this subject with the party (by construct of fairytailed Royalist demagoguery) directly responsible, then you may feel free to book an appointment at the naked emperor’s sandcastle to air your grievances. Methinks you both have a lot in common.

“they are taking steps to identify the driver involved and intend to prosecute.” Driver damn unlucky – how many times have the RCIPS refused to take action on dash cam footage saying that it’s impossible to prosecute based on that. But this time I guess RCIPS desperate for a positive story to offset their PR disasters over CUC pole gate and armed robberies, and prosecuting this guy be a massive step up from recovering kayaks. Until they discover the driver is one of Dwayne’s constituents lol.

The busy roundabouts no longer work efficiently in rush hour and need to be replaced with traffic lights.

Chances are, anyone stupid enough to drive a school bus in the wrong lane does not stop at stop signs or follow speed limits in their own car. The police could write 100 tickets a day at the 4 way by the hospital, and a hundred a day for speeding if they actually went out with the radar gun. They could also write 100 a day if they just stoped at the back of the traffic on Linford Pierson and walked between the cars looking for people texting.

importations of cars don’t cause this, lake of public transportation that is reliable and affordable does. also, get your cops out there pulling over speeding weaving cars. it’s everyday, all day. I saw a cop watch a truck in front of them go past the speed check at 55mph and did nothing. a bunch of losers who do zero for our roads. if they cared they would be on every stretch everyday.

    • Anonymous says:

Speeders are caught every day and ticketed. Going five miles per hour over the speed limit is not the cause for the horrible driving we see daily. Maybe if the RCIPS focused more on the other infringements that impede the flow of traffic like, not using indicators on a round about and junctions, driving FAR BELOW the speed limit, actually prosecuting bus and taxi drivers for the dangers they cause on the road, putting in make-up while driving. The list can go on forever, but all they focus on is the easy speeding ticket. It’s all about revenue for them and it’s obvious they actually don’t care about making the roads safer.

You’re absolutely correct 💯 I’ve known of other instances where people call the police and report that they have the dash cam footage – the police have reportedly said they cannot do anything as they didn’t witness it.
Which is a huge part of the problem of lawlessness on our roads, as the police are usually nowhere around. And when they are around they often still don’t see or do much of anything, or nothing at all!

      • Anonymous says:

If they get video of an armed robbery, then it isn’t actionable? Any excuse (for not doing their job) is better than none! Video evidence clearly showing an offence should be prima facie proof and actionable. Anything else is pure incompetence!

    • Anonymous says:

Agree. They should have some sort of portal or other means for the public to submit footage.

Trouble is that I’m not sure they’ll do anything with the footage. The few times I’ve had some near misses captured on video and submitted my incident report, absolutely nothing ever came out of it.

Send your dashcam footage to “PR@rcips.ky”. You may do so anonymously. The file size must be under 15mb, so you will have to edit it down. Remember to get the plate number of the offending vehicle.

With all due respect if I wanted information from RCIPS I wouldn’t be asking for it in the comments on a news site. Just seems like a waste of time unless ranting anonymously is your thing. I wonder how many ppl come here and rant about the same redundant crap without actually doing anything effective about it.
Laziness at worst, misdirected time and energy at best. Just saying.
