Robbers set up victim with fake car sale

| 29/09/2022 | 62 Comments

(CNS): A resident who arranged to meet someone who claimed on social media to be selling a vehicle was robbed Wednesday night at the location where he had arranged to meet the seller and exchange cash for the car. But as the would-be buyer waited at the rear of a restaurant on North Church Street, he was approached by two masked men, one armed with a gun and the other carrying a knife. The man with the firearm struck the victim with it and demanded money.

The two men then fled the location on foot with the undisclosed quantity of cash. However, the police said that the victim did not receive any serious injuries during the incident.

The suspect with the knife is described as being of dark complexion, about 5’8″ tall and of medium build. He was wearing a white sweatshirt with a hood. The suspect who brandished the firearm is described as being of dark complexion, about 5’8″ in height and of slender build. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

Police said the public should take extra precautions when conducting transactions with strangers.

“It is advisable to meet any purported sellers in well-lit public places, preferably during the day, and to bring a friend or family member with you,” the RCIPS said. “Do not take large amounts of cash to first meetings, arrange electronic transfers or arrange to leave a small deposit before final exchange.”

The matter is currently under investigation and anyone with information is asked to contact the George Town Police Station at 949-4222.

Which sensible person meets someone late at night in some dark corner to exchange cash for a car like a drug deal.

The proper way was to meet at the DMV, sign over ownership same time and have the car transferred to your name as the cash is exchanged.

I have no sympathy for this person.

You people are terrible with this I don’t have sympathy for the person.
Please do not be ridiculous. I also agree it takes common sense to
know how to move especially with previous crime data. It was like one lucky shot for the criminal.
Listen, the person could have passed on because someone with evil intentions and most likely
a illegal weapon thought it was alright to rob another human being like it was nothing.
Shame! The problem is these illegal guns, and maybe even illegal immigrants living on this island.

Yay, let’s be like America and let every low IQ, insecure loser own an arsenal. The statistics are overwhelming; more guns, more gun crime.

I’d rather not be a sitting duck when the crime gets to my area. If those we have elected don’t give a sh!7 about us, the least I can do is protect my family and myself. If it doesn’t go in my favour, at least I went out on my feet and not on my knees.

You people who love to compare to America and guns are more than welcome to not own guns. No one is forcing you to handle a firearm. Just stop preventing people who do want from getting it and protecting themselves. You are more than welcome to wait on the police to help you.

If you want guns, piss off to the USA. Nobody is forcing you to live here either.

I enjoy going to bars and restaurants, driving on the roads, walking around my neighborhood, knowing that it’s highly unlikely anyone in the vicinity has a gun. I realize it’s not a zero chance, but I’d take that over wondering if people around me are concealed carry types.

If you know about the story with Moses, when his father in law advised him to assign other men to be leaders of groups of men, it was good organization. The same idea is beneficial for a special crime prevention syndicate against organized crime.
It is too bad you feel people should just pick up and leave their home with no credit for suggested efforts. Heck, I would want to return to my home in peace, not in torment by the over growth of illegal weapons and murderers in my community.

            @10:52:
I do not know what la-la fairyland you are living in, but any wannabe gangsta who wants and can afford a gun can get a gun. Several years ago a quite dodgy former employee offered to get me a Sig for CI$1500 cash. He rattled off a menu of several other handguns he could get. That made my blood run cold. It would probably make you doody your breeches if you only knew how many people you rub shoulders with while out and about are strapped. According to RCIPS data for 2021 there was about 85 gun-related crimes per 100,000 persons in the Cayman Islands.

        • Anonymous says:

I agree about the sitting duck statement you made.
There definitely needs to be a special crime prevention syndicate readily available to address these problems. Absolutely no one should feel at fear for their life because of illegal weapons handled by murderers on these islands.
Listen, those who glamorize murder need to check in and know it is absolutely a bad idea to smuggle and hoard deadly weapons. Anyone with good intentions toward individuals who come here to live, work, and make it home alive eventually deserve protection too.
So you tell me who you this the real culprit are? It ain’t hard to spot. The signs are universal.

LOL OK Rambo and when one of your gun nutter friends decides to shoot up your kids school you’ll run in to save them will you? Or does a few dead “sheeple” not matter so long as you’re a real tough guy who will only go down on his feet not his knees? Such a lame trope. Here’s an idea, don’t get killed at all. The last people who should be allowed a gun is you insecure types who “need one to protect themselves”. The statistics couldn’t be any clearer, the more guns there are, the more gun crime and if a household has guns those people are more likely to be the victims of gun crime too. It’s a complete fallacy that if everyone has guns we’ll all be safer, the opposite is clearly true.

Anonymous 12:40 pm, please point me to those statistics? Actually, statistics show that the more firearms there are, the less crime there is. People who imagine less firearms usually mean less licensed firearms and do not say how they intend to prevent illegally held firearms and the crimes they are used to commit. The Harvard study that shows the opposite (available guns correlate with more gun crimes) invented a framework that claims to know how many illegally held firearms are available and also “controlled” for things like poverty and race; in other words, it was a worthless study that tried to counter the raw statistics based on gun control data, which shows that the states with less gun control have less crime and high gun control equals higher gun crimes. Nations with extremely high gun control laws still have high gun crimes. Outliers are nations without a history and culture of gun crimes, although many also have firearms available to most with low gun crimes anyway (Such as Switzerland & Finland). The UK is not reflecting its gun problem effectively, because they tend to ignore crimes between gangs, but their gangs are highly armed anyway because they are using guns.

How does one determine the number of guns, unless they are legally held? You do not, but all the so-called “studies” done to support gun control claim to have solved that problem. In the USA where guns are generally available, people think gun crimes are very high, but it is generally lower than the Cayman Islands rate. Another fun fact; the homicide rate in Afghanistan is generally lower than Cayman’s! More gun control, more crime; less gun control, less crime.

You got the wrong ones Mam or Sir.
You and the other guy need to amend your canvases.
The law abiding citizens with special training
deserve every right to protect themselves and deter crime. Also, you may just get some justice from a community effort. It is so insulting to see someone from these islands address people the way you did. And if you were talking about Caymanians being incapable dummies, you are talking to one that is the complete opposite.

Really, what do you expect? As a lot of the hot development projects are finishing up, the cheap work permit workers that are just being fronted by locals getting them permits (that the workers pay for themselves) now have no work and no money. So instead of these people be sent back to their home country, they are allowed to run around the island taking on whatever they can find or turning to crime. Of course no one in power cares about it because they only see the economic benefit (lifestyles of the rich & famous) for themselves and to hell with the community. Since we are turning into the lawless wild west, best we all be armed and have handle things ourselves.

If there was this level of violent crime in the U.K. it would be considered a national emergency! Then again, all the cops I know who went out there from England lasted a year on average before they gave up and came home.

Who said anything about accents in this article?
      If Caymanians voices get smaller,
there are local veterans available to remind you.
Who is mixed up with the source will be found out.
And for those authentic few that still exist,
we honor and respect heritage day.
This is no matter of accents.
It is the matter of how many
are in the net with the source.
You are welcome to explore that thought.

Ever want to sell something, conduct it in the police station car park. If the seller doesn’t agree ask yourself why.

Simple. No police officer is going to object to you being in the car park for your own safety.

Then again, this is Cayman so they probably will, probably ask you to move on after you get robbed and get half the cash as a kick back for ignoring any police reports.

I live in America and in my neighborhood we still keep the doors unlocked, can walk down the streets at any hour and do not have a high rate of crime and especially gun crime. America is a huge place. Please don’t think everywhere in America is unsafe. There are many places in America where there is very quiet living.
