(CNS): The Ministry of Youth, Sports, Culture and Heritage (MYSCH) has opened the nominations for National Heroes Day 2023 and is asking the public to put foward the names of local people or organisations for their volunteer work and charitable services. The nomination period for the local gongs is open until 16 October and will be entirely online this time around. Local libraries will help those who don’t have internet access.

“Each year thousands of residents volunteer their time, skills and resources to various causes which support the development and enhancement of our country,” said Culture Minister Bernie Bush. “Such selflessness and commitment to improving the lives of others is an essential component of what it means to be CaymanKind. The 2023 National Heroes Day observations will honour and celebrate these unsung heroes and organisations who inspire us through their acts of service.”

Premier Wayne Panton said National Heroes Day was one of the largest cultural events in the domestic calendar and many volunteers are heroes given their exceptional contributions. “Their commitment to serving our communities, whether it is through assisting vulnerable groups, or ensuring social cohesion, without compensation and fanfare, is a form of heroism that deserves recognition,” he added.

    Agree with 3.20pm. The person most deserving of National Hero under this theme is the late Olive Miller. However in these times she may be the wrong complexion although she herself never saw colour. Let’s hope she’s remembered for her 74 years of unparalled service to Cayman.

    The qualifications for consideration are complete BS.
    Have to have founded a charity prior to 1980 or had 20+ years of voluntary services or donated $1million? Honestly, we are actually saying someone that donates $1million can just be on the list?
    What about the newer charities or people that have been doing things the last 10 years?
    Honestly, this is complete BS.

    When you name so many people at once it loses its meaning. One or two a year yes, but at this point everyone in Cayman will have been named a hero and lose its meaning. What a joke!

    Those who are genuinely deserving of these awards will no doubt decline their nominations.
    Anyone who accepts is in it for all the wrong reasons.

    Seriously???…not only do they write job specs for specific individuals but now they are writing them for awards as well…civil service is a joke.

    “For a Charitable Services to receive an award, the not-for-profit organisation must meet the following:

    -Has made an exceptional contribution to the development, enhancement, safety and wellbeing of the community;
    -Is an established not-for-profit organisation with 20+ years in service;
    -Registered and in Good standing with the Cayman Islands General Registry;
    -Provide services in the Cayman Islands; and
    -Internationally recognised.🤣

    Well….if it’s to feature volunteers, then:

    ….the late Mrs. Olive Miller for National Hero!

    “What…she wasn’t born here?!” “Oh, we have enough now anyway?”

    “Well, how about the Humane Society?” “No?”

    “Yes, most of them are foreigners. So?”

    “Oh..I see. It’s not for expat volunteers.”

    “Well that’ll make for a very short ceremony this year!”

    Nice one Cyril!

    They get PR points already, now they need hero recognition too?

      That is mean.! I think the title”Hero” is being overused for things that do not apply, however I must add that mostly the expat community gets involved in cleaning up the beaches and other public areas. Thank you all very much for doing your part. More of the “locals” should pitch in.

      Are you implying that it is expatriates that do the volunteer work..?
