(CNS): The recent solicitation by the National Conservation Council for nominations from the public for places that could become protected areas has closed after dozens of people nominated more than 45 potential sites. Speaking at the NCC’s general meeting Wednesday, John Bothwell from the Department of the Environment, which oversaw the consultation on behalf of the NCC, said it revealed a real diversity of interest from the public for protecting natural locations, some of which had never been suggested before.

“It’s going to be very interesting for the council to go through all of these nominations,” Bothwell said. He explained that the DoE would now prepare a report on all of the nominated sites, and given the number of submissions, it would take a bit of time to produce.

As they assemble the report, the department will also do the technical assessments of the nominated areas so that they can be considered alongside the public submissions. Full details of all the areas that have been nominated will be released in the report.

Bothwell welcomes the public participation in the nomination process because he said it reflects a growing interest in the community in the need to conserve the natural environment.

The increased attention from the public on environmental issues was also highlighted by an update from Lisa Hurlston, the NCC member for climate change-related issues. She reported that over 1,000 people have now taken part in the climate change survey that circulated following the recent visit by UK scientists.

Work in relation to Cayman’s climate risk assessment continues, and a report is expected in September that will inform the long-awaited new climate change policy.

So let me get this straight. Cayman, a few decades ago was a sleepy place that “time forgot”.

People came, fell in love with it…and decided to stay, adding to the local population.
Repeat, repeat, repeat for the next few decades.

NOW, these very same people, who did very well in Cayman financially I may add, now want to “stop the environmental destruction of Cayman”.

It is somewhat hypocritical, in my view, as ALL who have moved here, and their offspring, have not only contributed to but ACCELERATED the consumption of Cayman’s natural resources.

The local population still hold the majority of land holdings in the eastern part of Grand. That’s the real issue here.

Next time I will be nominating every piece of undeveloped land on the west bay peninsula. Let’s see how the environmental squad will feel about that.

I trust that these persons who nominated sites for conservation were nominating land they owned and not other people’s property

Was there a request for public consultation published somewhere other than an obscure dot ky website?

How much money is being held by the CI Govt Environmental Protection Fund? It doesn’t look like any was spent on the previous nominations!
More froth and bubbles. Who is in charge of the Ministry of Environment again?

Where in this article does it say that no money was spent on previous nominations? Stop playing games. Your agenda is obvious.

This looks like a bunch of English people wanting to yet again tell Caymanians what to do with their land. They probably will be devaluing property!!! They will not be paying property owners the true value of their land! They need to butt out. England is famous for sending in their people to dictate to others.

You tell them. In the end when all the foreigners are gone and this place is left with ugly empty buildings in despair, crime and corruption, they’ll be begging for foreign aid. I’ve never been so ashamed of being a Caymanian as now. When I was growing up, it was caymanians mostly who created Marine parks, promoter local heritage and such. Now look at us, idiots who sold out for foreigners’ cash yet still vilify them.

      what is Cayman famous for?

Clearly a case of cranial rectosis

That’s a pretty broad sweeping comment. Perhaps Caymanians need to take more interest in their land. Forgot too busy selling it all of for development and then moaning about it. You need to care about your environment and protect it because once it’s gone it’s gone. There are plenty of other Caribbean islands that are unspoilt and where you truly get a Caribbean vibe and not think you’ve come to Miami.

That would be a good start. Might as well add the vacant lot next door where we throw our rubbish over the fence
