COVID rate continues to decline in latest trend report

(CNS): There are an estimated 916 active cases of COVID-19 in the Cayman Islands as of Thursday morning, but the spread continues to decline, according to the latest weekly Public Health Spotlight report. Between 12 and 18 June, 369 cases of the virus were reported, with the daily average dropping from 67 in the previous week to 53, though that increased by Wednesday of this week to 57 cases, as the numbers continue to fluctuate.

There were eight people in hospital on Wednesday who were positive for COVID. Last week hospital admissions as a result of the virus continued to fall, as just one new patient was admitted directly relating to the virus, with four more people testing positive after being admitted for other reasons. Throughout the week, nine patients were treated for COVID-19 while in the hospital.

The current COVID-19 regulations expire next Thursday, and it is likely that when it meets Tuesday Cabinet will decide which new regulations will be rolled out based on these latest numbers. Government is under pressure from the broader community to lift the mask mandates, especially in schools, and the tourism sector is hoping the CIG will lift all restrictions, including pre-travel testing and vaccine requirements.

Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan has been lobbying for all of these restrictions to be lifted, but it’s unlikely that Travel Cayman will be disbanded yet. Over 900 people are currently isolating as a result of being infected and the spread of the virus remains persistent, but fewer people are becoming ill from COVID.

In its weekly report, Public Health said the Cayman Islands still has the lowest cumulative fatality rate among the Caribbean UKOTs and among the lowest of all Caribbean countries. This could be attributed to high vaccination levels, as the epidemiological data suggests that it has saved the lives of 56 people that were hospitalised.

“Key metrics have started to improve again and the declining trend in cases noted prior to last week has since continued,” officials stated in the report. “Vaccination continues to be the key protective tool against COVID.” Almost 95% of the population aged five and over has now had at least one dose of a vaccine.

On the plus side of dissuading unvaccinated tourists, they do tend heavily towards angry Trumpists, so it isn’t all bad.

Covid declining while the immunity has waned off of the majority. Where’s the science showing us how that works ? Less cases now than when the vaccine was supposedly protecting people 🙄

From speaking to several people who have hand COVID in the past couple months many are not reporting it. I’m sure this isn’t unique to people I know. The Government is making decisions with flawed data.

Here comes the COVID-19! Pre-arrival testing and mask mandate to be lifted 30 June. Be careful for what you ask, you may get it – COVID-19 in this case.

We will get what we deserve. Reputable news sources with scientists are confirming that the newer variants are causing infections in fully vaccinated people.

The drug companies are rushing to create a new vaccine for the variants.

The virus is mutating globally and we are sitting ducks when the safety precautions are lifted.

You the no that requiring people to get an LFT test before flying in, or wear a mask in a store or restaurant, is protecting us? Removing those restrictions will make minimal difference to the current situation, where the mask mandates are rarely observed and we have a higher local infection rate than the countries people are flying in from.

Most people have had it alraedy. Nothing to be scared of. We have 3 or 4 jabs provided by the UK ages ago, it’s no longer a concern to people.

As a Caymanian I am grateful for lifting majority of Covid Restrictions. I was hoping ALL restrictions would have been lifted. I am just reading with disgust, that unvaccinated tourists wont be able to come to Cayman. What are you doing? Just lift all for everyone. You are simply just add more fuel to the fire of one off Cayman’s pillar economy. My suggestion to you go back to the drawing table and just lift all restrictions. I dont think this is going to sit well with tourists.. Disband travel Cayman and place all employees into Gov’t jobs. I would still commend them for doing a good job, but its now time to move on.

The majority of other Caribbean islands have now either fully re-opened to those who have chosen not to take the current covid vaccines, or only require a rapid test to enter. These include BVI, Barbados, Jamaica, T&T, Grenada, Dominica, Dominican Republic, the Dutch ABC islands, Cuba, Monserrat.

We recently spent some weeks in Cayman as unvaccinated visitors (close ties exemption), spending c$30k. However, the hoops we had to jump through means that our next trip, probably in January, is likely to be to Bonaire.

All data now show that the vaccines have almost no effect on infection or transmission after a few months, and Cayman has higher infection rates than most other countries, so there is zero public health logic for this discrimination.

Oh do grow up. No one has had Covid cross their mind since Christmas. Covid was last front page news outsole cayman in December 2021 when all rules went. In cayman now the only mask mandate is fosters. Nowhere else. Been like that for months.

Looks like you’ve already posted about 8 comments mentioning new variants. Slow learner, read carefully and understand. Realize that there are going to be new variants for many years, possibly forever. You are in a shrinking minority and we’re tired of your obsessive and hysterical bullshit. We don’t want to live wearing masks forever and we can calculate our own risks. Keep wearing your mask while driving alone as long as you want and keep getting endless injections to protect yourself. It’s time for you to mind your own business.

Variants will always be created. Infection rates are irrelevant. The only measure of note is if a health system is being overwhelmed. That is not the case in the US, UK, or any other country having these latest variants. South Africa, which experienced more of these than most, has removed all restrictions.

Perhaps you would prefer China, or North Korea? If you don’t like South Africa, try the UK, which is currently having a BA.5 ripple, but numbers in hospital are only at the level of the BA.2 ripple from mid-May, and numbers in ICU and deaths have not increased significantly.

Because we all have 4 jabs. So we are vaccinated, very simple… we all took our jabs and didn’t die… some unvaccinated died, their fault. Now it is all over.

Day before flying testing is irrelevant as is mask wearing on the plane. We have thousands of cruise shippers arriving per week and they tested anywhere from 3-7 days before arrival and haven’t worn a mask on-board prior to arrival. They also aren’t masking on buses, in shops and in restaurants.

The science thus says, remove these restrictions. Keeping them would only be about politics

I’m sure there are many more people who are currently positive than the report says.
Some people are probably testing positive and not reporting.
Others don’t know they have it so they are not even testing.
Some are probably feeling mild symptoms but not bothering to test and carrying on with their normal activities.

Haven’t you consulted the mother country PM. I truly respect his decision to lift all restrictions. My God what is the Pact Gov’t waiting for. Are we going to give the CDC more ammunition to blacklist us more.. Boris Johnson had all kind of scientists and professors at his helm. He had enough, UK economy was going rock bottom , people and businesses were hurting, so he had to open back the country asap. Please for the love of God and Country, lift all Covid restrictions now Businesses, hotels othe tourism entities are feeling the pinch.. What is the hold-up PACT? I saw a video with Kenneth Bryan crying about banks foreclosures, yet he never mentioned about lifting Covid Restrictions. Businessess are hurting and tourism is down. That’s what he should be crying about. Please LIFT all Covid restrictions now , you will be held accountable to your constituents. If Jamaica did it why cant Cayman. For now you are not going to have a Covid free Cayman. People should know now how to safeguard themselves.

Government needs to make a decisions. Either keep the mandates or drop them. only about 50% of bars and restaurants are actively enforcing them and almost none of the shops in GT on a cruise ship day are ding anything about mask in some even the staff is not wearing masks. Personally I don’t care which way they go on this but if they are going to keep the masking requirements then enforce them. If they are not going to enforce than do away with the mandate. I would be laughable if it were not problem that is long standing in Cayman. Having successive governments that pass laws and regulation that have absolutely no meaning because of the lack of enforcement. Our elected officials seem to be able to easily find money to increase their pay on a regular basis but cant afford to enforce any of the laws they pass.

Newer variants are rapidly spreading in other countries as our enforcement of mask mandates is an absolute joke, as are the businesses who know better and flagrantly break the rules, which makes one wonder what other rules are they breaking.

Food safety? Tip sharing? Pension payments?

If anyone knows who these businesses are, post them up.

If they are so proud to violate mandates, they should feel no shame in the publicity.

But it does prove that masks are meaningless and ineffective. You state there is no enforcement, yet infections are reducing, that’s been the case for the past 2 years. Just open up and and rid us of these stupid mandates.

Travel Time LFT and masks are somewhat out of step with the rest of the world now, weeks behind North America’s policy easings, but Cayman’s per capita infection rate is still twice as high. Keep in mind that if McKeeva or Roy had their way, the border wouldn’t even be open yet – they wanted to lockdown and restore the zero-COVID bubble last August. We should expect these policies to expire next week.

  17. Lift all mandates says:

It is time to lift the mask mandate, as well as pretravel testing and vaccine requirements for visitors.

They serve no purpose at this point and only hold back our ability to earn a livelihood and have the best education possible.

CI Government, if you want to do something useful for public health, lift the Import Duty on Fruits and Vegetables and encourage healthy lifestyle. Obesity and poor diet kill many more persons than Omicron.
