CDC Detention Centre on Wednesday night (from social media)

(CNS): Customs and Border Control (CBC) has confirmed that there was “a tense situation” on Wednesday evening at its Detention Centre, where a number of Cuban migrants are being held. CBC said it was working with its partner agencies, including the RCIPS, HM Cayman Islands Prison Service and Public Health, to defuse the situation.

No details were given about what was actually happening or what had caused the situation, but social media posts suggested that the migrants had dragged mattresses out of the buildings and were rioting. Officials also said an update would be released later.

There are currently around 186 Cuban migrants being held by CBC at various locations and tagged in the community. It is understood that there are at least 80 people at the Fairbanks centre.

So how many rioters are being arrested and charged? We treat people how to treat us. No rules. No responsibility. No accountability.

Send their as$ back to where they came from. Quit this taking care of the worlds problems when we have plenty of home grown problems right here to deal with. The hell with all the human rights and worrying that the Governor will get upset. Let him go in there and deal with these ungrateful bums

Maybe we should work out a deal with Rawanda? Send them there for processing. Surely the UK wouldn’t have an issue with that!!

Haiti is closer, within range of Cayman Airways, and would gratefully receive 5K per person, per year. Come to think of it, perhaps they can also house anyone who threatens a witness at Northward.

Better still , send Kenneth Mac and Saunders to Haiti to show them what they are doing to Cayman’s future.

If they are causing us problems give them food and water and let them go! We have enough unwanted people to deal with.

How can we fault them for being upset and frustrated with Cayman’s lack of preparation? They want to link up with USA-bound Central American migration column and are being detained here like criminals. By now, our agencies should be fully aware of motivations, Visa waiver inducements, and Cayman’s strategic maritime position on this route, and expect more transiting Cuban voyagers. We also have a fully-funded Coast Guard with 100nm radar that should have those switched on, intercepting all unscheduled vessel traffic at Int’l maritime border, giving them options, and as much as is humanely possible: redirecting on those whom we can’t adequately process. If our agencies are “surprised” or “unprepared”, then there are officers that need to be fired.

But why is it Cayman’s responsibility to be prepared for unexpected visitors? We can’t guess that 20+ Cubans will be arriving every other day. We simply don’t have the facilities for so many people, and that’s not wrong to say, it’s just the facts.

Yes, Cayman should be prepared. Europe is managing millions of refugees. Cayman can manage 186. They are human beings.

That 186 could easily turn in to 4000 to 5000 if they now they can come here and get special treatment.

It’s time to renegotiate this rule and figure out a better and faster way of getting them returned to Cuba.

well, we live in the age of mass migration. Address its cause.

              Yup. Lax border controls.

These are mostly economic migrants. If they are their entry was unlawful. We owe them nothing but a quick trip home, and imprisonment if they ever come back without permission.

Why don’t you take them all in at your house then since you are such a bleeding heart!

First, they aren’t unexpected. Second, we have the tools to better manage the arrivals. Third, we can’t move our islands, so we are involved whether we like it or not. Pretending we aren’t involved isn’t helpful. There shouldn’t be any vessels approaching our waters that our Coast Guard haven’t been tracking for hours and 100 nautical miles. If CBC and Coast Guard are going to be run unprofessionally, then that’s a choice.

The deal with Cuba is obviously broken. They take too long to agree to take their people back. Those in boats who think they can go on should be given provisions and sent on their way. Only those who are shipwrecked need to be held for return to Cuba.
