Cayman Islands Hospital, George Town

(CNS): There were about 1,130 active cases of COVID-19 in the Cayman Islands Monday morning with nine people now admitted to hospital, an increase of five patients since Friday. The seven-day rolling average case number for Monday also increased to 87. Over the last five days, 417 people have reported positive for SARS-CoV-2, including 36 on the Sister Islands as the virus numbers keep climbing.

In the updated regulations rolled out on Friday, social gathering limits were dropped for outside events and indoor ones increased to 750. The increase in case numbers was blamed for retaining the mask mandate.

We really need to spread the word that Paxlovid (the treatment drug) needs to be taken on day 1 or 2 of symptoms for high risk people. There is a very small window. Do not wait until it is too late if you are high risk.

Certainly, any treatment that offers some protection against dire outcomes is better than nothing. However, at-risk persons should NOT depend solely on Paxlovid but should always take prudent precautions so as not to become infected in the first place.
From Pfizer’s own website regarding a recent study they conducted:
“In this trial, compared to placebo, Pfizer observed risk reductions of 32% and 37% in adults who received PAXLOVID for five and ten days, respectively, to prevent infection. These results, however, were not statistically significant and, as such, the primary endpoint of reducing the risk of confirmed and symptomatic COVID-19 infection in adults who had been exposed to the virus through a household contact was not met.”
The takeaway: Pfizer deemed that the desired endpoint was NOT met by their drug.

And why would you report it if you are positive? You are stuck in quarantine until you produce a negative PCR test which is asinine. If I feel sick and test positive I am staying home until I test negative on a LFT, I AM NOT reporting it to government and being subjected to a PCR test to exit quarantine. CIG continues to follow some sort of made-up science.

I shall agree that the number is somewhat…er…under-reported.
Far more egregiously under-reported is the number of Long Covid cases. Crickets from our government about that. The pathetic Cayman Islands government Minister of Health has yet to even mention Long Covid in her windy blabbering. A sinister coverup? Or just incompetence?

Long Covid Fact-of-the-Hour: Top U.S health advisor, Dr. Anthony Fauci has described Long Covid as “…a phenomenon that is really quite real and quite extensive”.

  6. Anonymous says:

The Covid pandemic continues and yet the Cayman Islands Government utters not a word about the very real and very serious issue of Post Covid 19 Syndrome or “Long Covid”.
The UK government is taking it very serious and so is the US Government. The following is excerpted from a Bloomberlaw article of March 21 2022 reporting on the U.S. government’s efforts to address the issue of Long Covid:
    …..
“Long Covid is a catch-all term for the constellation of health conditions caused by Covid-19, some of which are so severe they’ve left people unable to work. There’s a real concern the pandemic will leave a whole population of people who can’t work. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in a March 2 report that this could affect the broader U.S. economy through decreased labor participation and an increased need for use of Social Security disability insurance or other publicly subsidized insurance.
By some estimates, there could be anywhere from 7.7 million to 23 million people who have developed these new, recurring, or ongoing health conditions like debilitating fatigue, difficulty breathing, and cognitive issues, since their initial Covid-19 infection, the report said.
One of the most cited studies, by researchers at Oxford University in the U.K., found one-third of people who contracted Covid-19 in 2020 had one or more symptoms three to six months after they first got sick.
Through its Long Covid Initiative, Solve M.E. plans to release a white paper in the coming weeks that estimates 31.9 million adults in the U.S. have long Covid and 9.5 million of them are disabled by it. The group feels its expertise in M.E. is an asset to studying long Covid, but Taylor understands others might feel they’re looking at it from a particular perspective. (Note: Solve M.E. is a group that advocates for patients with post-infection illnesses.)
In 2020 Congress provided $1.15 billion in funding over four years for the National Institutes of Health to study the long-term consequences of Covid-19. The NIH gave New York University Langone Health $470 million to set up a national network of large-scale studies called the NIH Researching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative. An NIH spokesperson said RECOVER is working to understand the pathology of long Covid.

Bills have been introduced in the House and Senate to appropriate more money to research and to educate doctors about long Covid. One proposal would provide grant funding for community-based organizations to help long haulers with legal matters, get public benefits like Social Security disability insurance, or deal with housing issues.”
    ……
The USA is taking Long Covid very seriously and so is the UK. The UK has funded research on Long Covid and has set up specialist clinics across the UK to deal with Long Covid cases. Very recent research suggest that upwards of 50% of those infected with Covid will experience Long Covid.
But what are we hearing from the irresponsible Panton PACTless Clown Car about Long Covid? Crickets. Not once have I seen or heard them so much as mention the issue much less give it the serious attention that it warrants. Have you? The Clown Car is grossly negligent and irresponsible. Long Covid gives rise to long term impacts on the population and yet the Clowns ignore it as if it does not exist. How utterly pathetic!

Well cut and paste. But what is your point? Covid is and will remain endemic and now omicron is one of the most infectious diseases there is. Long covid is not a reason to impose restrictions, because people will get the disease, sooner or later, most likely sooner. The only reason to impose restrictions was to protect health care from being overwhelmed and to allow for vaccination. Even countries that have no restrictions now have not been overwhelmed by omicron and everyone who wants vaccination has had it.

You missed the point? Seriously? How could you possibly miss the point?
Ok. Read slowly and pay attention this time. Ask for assistance if you have problems getting it. First off, I never mentioned restrictions, you inserted that. I was addressing only the issue of the postacute sequelae to Covid 19 infections. Call it what you will: Post Covid 19 Syndrome/Post-Covid-19 Condition/or “Long Covid”, the postacute sequelae of Covid is being ignored by our hopelessly, breathtakingly, irresponsible government. So you do not miss the point again: Long Covid is a very real and very serious health issue that is being acknowledged and addressed by responsible governments the world over. But just not in the Cayman Islands: we officially ignore it as if it does not exist. Statistics from research allow us to conclude that there have been–and are–many cases of Post-Covid conditions here. That indication is confirmed by several health care professionals with whom I have spoken off the record. I am one of the suspected cases, as are some family members and others I know. I have heard of several more in my business and acquaintances circle. The point that apparently went well over your head is that the Panton-PACTless Clown Car (PPLCC) and their minions are totally ignoring the issue of Long Covid. Have you heard or read anything from the PPLCC about Long Covid? Have you? Ok…did you get the point this time? Hope so.
(By the way: “Excerpted from” would clearly indicate cut and paste…duhhhh….smh, eyes rolling… Would you transcribe it and type it all out?)
PS: The experts say and logic dictates that the best way to prevent Long Covid is to prevent Covid-19 infections. Apply as needed.

Since two times offering rational discourse on “the point” did not register with you, I will repeat the point a third and last time for the s-l-o-w class. A forth time for those below the slow class will not happen, I will simply refer to the time stamp of this comment so they can get a literate person to assist them to comprehend the point in the following sentence:
**THE POINT: It is grossly irresponsible, horridly negligent, and pathetically incompetent for the Panton-PACTless clown Car to continue to ignore the issue of Long Covid.**
(I summarise in one sentence in case Attention Span Deficit is a factor in play regarding missing the point.)
Get it now? Is three times the charm?
If not, a hint: It would be a great point if you get a literate point person to give you pointers about getting the point and they point out the point and as a result the point is pointedly pointed through that pointy thickness and you can point to the point yourself rather than pointlessly babbling about missing the point. Because in this exchange I have gotten the point rather pointedly that educating the pointy non-learner is a point that is pointedly pointless. (Get the point? If not, gee…too damn bad, you are on your own.)

He, (and I assume it is a he given the pomposity and ego on show and the descent to the ad hominem), seems to want someone at CIG to look into long covid.

And yet, the real point of this terrible styled composition is given away with the comment “The experts say and logic dictates that the best way to prevent Long Covid is to prevent Covid-19 infections. Apply as needed.” That runs directly counter to the comment below “The fact that I never wrote about restrictions is a manifestation of your entrenched “restriction” obsession and is a quite benighted inference.” The poster wants to “prevent infections” but is critical of the natural inference that this means support for restrictions which now clearly only delay infections rather than prevent them.

We can read. We can infer. We can also analyse data.

Take care, you are about to disappear up your own backside.

Apprehending such was not beyond your pay grade after all, but it did take three tries. How wonderful if the Clown Car should be so astute!
You attended Cambridge? Oooo! Wow! Cambridge pre-school? Zoo? University? Cambridge Brew House? Could just have well have been any one. Self-proclaiming haute school attendance is hardly a testament to an anonymous commentator’s intellectual level. Was your name-dropping a school supposed to impress? If so… Nah. Failed. Why? Here: I slummed it at Cambridge with a double major and a Triple First, but then moved up some notches to Harvard for post grad, culminating in two PhD’s, summa cum laude both. Nuff said about unsubstantiated academic boasts from online strangers.
I must say that you should be lauded for publishing a fact (even if that fact is abundantly apparent): of course I shall agree with you regarding your intellectual level. It must be a somewhat agonizing admission from a Cambridge lad, but, this Harvard quaddie thanks you.

Now to the gritty. (The nitty we may save for later.)
Why is it that the statement regarding prevention of Covid must needs mean it is intended to refer to restrictions? Why make “restrictions” the sole or most “natural” inference? Yours is not a competent conclusion, but a woefully benighted inference in light of the statement that that restrictions “clearly only delay infections rather than prevent them”. Disparaging “Restrictions!” indeed seem to be the lone pony in your less than impressive rodeo. May we assume that you possess some knowledge of restrictions and their role in delaying of infections? If so, you should be privy to this data and have ready answer: What is the average “delay” period that “restrictions” effect? A week? A month? Six months? A year? A decade? Or, “I dunno and I parrot this tripe aimlessly”?
Apparently you took the parting advice “Apply as needed” to promote your prime obsession.

                As to your self-recommendations:
                You can read? (Really?)
You can infer. (Yes. And I can do heart transplant surgery with a cheese knife… with likely the same success rate as your crafting of inferences; however, I know better than to try. You should be similarly prudent regarding making inferences.)
You can analyse data. (Yes! Analyse–pronounced with a long initial “ā”–is delightfully applicable to your exercises in logic.)

(Why are so many silly people so obsessed with the background noise of “Restrictions!” reverberating in the vast vacuousness of their own skulls that they see “Restrictions!” everywhere?) The fact that you wrongly infer that the point is “Restriction!” could be a manifestation of your having been instructed by teachers incapable of instilling literacy and critical thinking skills. Sadly, that is something I cannot remedy here. (I have given you the benefit of the doubt and placed the possible culpability on your instructors.)

Something besides covid and long covid is also causing excess mortality across the globe, but scientists haven’t got a clue what that might be. I mean except for covid there’s really nothing new that’s been introduced to the population over the past year. They’re stumped.

      • Anonymous says:

That is certainly food for thought.
In my opinion, if the Sars‑CoV‑2 virus exhibited the ability to achieve provirus or cytoplasmic episomal latency–as was hypothesised by some reports early in the pandemic–that would have been detected and confirmed by now. The main reason to reject Covid 19 latency is that it is accepted that coronaviruses cannot establish a latent, post acute infection.
Regardless of the cause, the Panton-PACTless Clown Car is ignoring a very real threat to our health because Long Covid can present with symptoms far more widespread and severe than those manifested during the intitial Covid infection.

Long Covid Fact-of-the-Day: Women are less likely to develop severe acute Covid but more likely to develop Long Covid than men.

Where did I state or even imply that the health conditions mentioned are the “same” as Covid? I made nary an allusion as to the equivalence of those maladies to Covid. Functional literacy and reasoning competency would lead one to agnise that I expressed a conditional statement that is wholly valid. In point of fact, an apt observation would be that I was expressing a dissimilitude rather than an equivalency.
If your moot is applicable then I shall proffer that he employed a passel of conditions inconsistent with Covid in regard to the potential to instill general public concern and they certainly differ in their ability to transmit to others. Which brings me to frame a salient question that is not rhetorical but urgent: How many cases are being treated involving heart conditions, neurological issues, pulmonary deficits, etc, that are likely postacute sequelae of Covid?
FYI: Following your injection in regard to what “the rest of the world” does: The WHO (you know…the WORLD Health Organization) recognises and reports on the potentially dire impacts of Long Covid and has done so for some time.
