Octogenarian dies from COVID-related causes

(CNS): An 86-year-old patient who was fully vaccinated but suffering from severe comorbidities died Wednesday as a result of COVID-19 related causes. This is the sixteenth person to die as a result of SARS-CoV-2 over the last two years in Cayman since the virus arrived on our shores. Another 15 people are in hospital due to the virus, after two new patients were admitted and three were discharged. So far, 200 people have been admitted to hospital with the virus since March last year.

There were further indications that the case numbers are finally falling, as Public Health counted 132 new positive cases for Monday, 31 January, though the figure is expected to increase slightly when the final number is confirmed. A decline in numbers at the end of last week followed a peak earlier, according to the COVID-19 Situational Report covering the period between 23 and 29 January.

During that week 35 people were admitted to hospital because of the virus and the majority of patients are unvaccinated, officials said. 7,930 tests were carried out by Public Health over the course of the week and 2,146, or 27%, were positive. But since almost 600 people tested positive on Tuesday of last week, the numbers have since begun to decline, suggesting that the impact of the very contagious Omicron variant of the virus may have peaked.

UK data show Covid now has an infection mortality rate of less than 1 in 1000, less than ‘flu. For the vaccinated it is much less, since vaccination reduces the need for intensive care by 58 fold for the 75+.

To put into perspective an 86 year old woman has about a 13% chance of dying n the next 12 months. So even if every 86 year old caught covid the most increase to the risk of death would from 13% to less than 13.1%.

For people who are currently in isolation, under this comment:

Thumbs UP if you DID report
Thumbs DOWN if you DID NOT report

This should give us an idea of the number of people who are reporting and who are not.

Good innings, doubt I’ll last to 86.

200 hospitalized since March last year per the article or March 2020?

No daily reporting covid news means good news. It was expected. This is how the world works. Only good news are reported.
    What’s new?

Thank you for the link to the weekly report. Did i miss the “recovered” numbers, or the “active” numbers?

Sad news on the loss, condolences to the family.

Don’t report, it’ll get you stuck into a never ending system that holds you hostage longer than you are infectious.

False, and also bad advice. Yesterday we got same day exit PCR, and a release letter online in minutes with a low positive PCR test result. Delighted to be back at work!

      • Anonymous says:

I went for exit test yesterday too… No results yet. So yes, I’ll never report again if they continue to use the PCR exit for everyone so they are overwhelmed.

Should I have been in your place, the ultimate outcome would have been the same: I would be back at work. The difference is that I would have certainly not reported the positive LFT. I would have taken a few days off and away from public contact and left it at that. No fuss, no muss. Delighted to have not put my ass in government’s hands.

        Still no results….

While we have a large percentage of people with comorbidities it does not appear that our leadership has taken this into consideration when making decisions related to the suppression of the virus. The decisions that are being made by the government don’t seem to be based on the best available medical and scientific research.

Every death is sad but for the healthy triple jabbed covid just isn’t a concern anymore. People does from all sorts of illnesses every day. Time to end all testing and isolation / restrictions in cayman like the rest of the world. Case numbers and daily reporting don’t matter anymore – omicron and it’s new danish sub variant are no longer a concern and the booster clearly prevents illness and death. COVID just isn’t headline news in the Uk and other countries anymore.

Literally an article about another accelerated death in a person who was also fully vaccinated. Being fully vaccinated is a great advantage, as are wearing a mask, distancing, and LFTing regularly. It is not a bulletproof vest.

BREAKING: U.S. reports 3,895 new coronavirus deaths, one of the highest since the pandemic began

It’s gonna be so cool when all those cruise shippers spread it here since they get out of LFTs!

Breaking: The US is full of unvaccinated idiots. The UK, with no restrictions now other than a 5 day quarantine, had 45 deaths within 28 days of a positive test, and about 30% of those are deaths from other causes according to official and sane datasets. 30 deaths from 69 million.

86 year olds die every day. Hardly news.

Never-the-less it was reported, and a little compassion does no harm. No doubt this person meant a great deal to those close to him/her. May they rest in peace.

I watched a movie where the society has the elderly kill themselves when they turn 60 year old. Hardly what I would call elderly but I guess this is what you would want. Remember, we are all going to be old some day unless we die young. I am so mortified by this current administrations nonchalant attitude towards the elderly but I guess it’s understandable being that they are younger but I hope they look in the mirror and realize that almost all of them are obese which will make them susceptible to dying from Covid. My father lived many years with Type 2 diabetes. He died in his 90’s. I’m just saying this to say that if these diseases are managed then they will live to ripe old ages but if they get Covid it will cut their lives short. People need to stop being selfish and exposing the elderly and/or immunocompromised people to Covid. Rest homes should have a plexiglass area that the families can see their elderly relatives so they still can have that contact without the literal contact. And relatives keep your children away because the children are bigger super spreaders than adults now.

How would you suggest financing the permanent never ending closure of the economy and everyone being locked down, which you seem to advocate? Where would the money come from if cayman ceased all business and closed the ‘economy’?

    • Biteme says:

His/her words sound harsh but honestly y’all not much better if at all. When you go about your comments disregarding the human toll opening has cost in a suttle way you are saying F U I want my money so please don’t start being compassionate now. Keep your “prayers and condolences” to yourself.

Is it really on a decline tho, or people just fed up of reporting cause of length of time to get released from isolation?

      ☝🏼

This could not be a more astute observation. The current regulations have turned a typically law-abiding country into one to where the rules are not being adhered.

      • Anonymous says:

        Typically law abiding country? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

        Try so pay attention man.

      • Corruption is endemic says:

You think this is a law abiding country?

Do you read the news or actually live here?

The pirate DNA is strong. People who benefit from corruption are just as guilty as those committing the crimes. The general population actively seeks out benefits from the politicians here that are illegal. The what’s in it for me attitude is a core value.

In a democracy people get the government(s) that they deserve. Look at the history of these islands.

Too true sadly!! Cayman parents wanted their kids back in school after Christmas so taught them “not to LFT test or report.”

I know of 3+ well respected families that you would assume are “law abiding” that refused LFTs because they didn’t want kids to miss High School. Of course these same kids infected their classrooms and made my child very sick. Thanks for being so selfish?

The Ministry of EDU & Government failed us here at a simple task. ON-SITE LFT to return to school- https://www.gov.uk/government/news/testing-measures-to-ensure-young-people-return-to-classrooms

It worked for England last month, but our new Chief Medical Officer does not have the desire or wherewithal to control reporting. The proof of this is again sadly the outbreak in the schools and CI Prison?

Also- we failed our public when we had the chance in October 2021 with the 50+ covid-breach cases going to Court at the same time as the Omi-spike, but do to favors for friends and no teeth by police; we chose NOT to enforce punishments or any notable fines. So the message by halloween was that Govt was not serious anymore about controlling covid.

I was never an Alden fan, but at least he took Covid and measures to control seriously.

The report card since Dr. Lee left is a big fail.
