Daily COVID cases fall in line with drop in PCR tests

| 07/12/2021 | 105 Comments

(CNS): In today’s coronavirus report, Public Health officials recorded the lowest number of positive COVID-19 cases in the Cayman Islands since the middle of October, as PCR test numbers fell to just 530, revealing 61 new infections including one in a traveller. It is not yet clear if this fall in test and infection numbers reflects a decline in spread since the positive rate is 11.5%.

Over the last week that rate has yo-yoed from a low of just under 7% to a high of 15%. There are still 3,645 active confirmed cases of the virus, including ten on Cayman Brac, and there are 14 COVID-positive patients in hospital. Alongside those with the virus, several hundred contacts are also quarantining. The number of people in some form of isolation is now 4,208.

The total number of cases recorded since the start of the pandemic is now 7,724, with almost 7,000 of those cases recorded over the last three months.

There were no COVID-19 vaccination clinics held on Monday, 6 December.

  1. Common sense says:

Time we consigned TravailCayman to the history books.Incoming travellers need to show proof of vaccination and a negative PCR/LFT test when checking in for their flight. Give arrivals in Cayman an immediate LFT test and if they fail, it’s self isolation or quarantine. No more “authorisations” from T.C. needed to return home.

    • Anonymous says:

Too much testing of tourists on holiday . It’s been a couple weeks and it’s proven that they are not bringing in or catching covid ( how many tested positive so far? 6-8? Drop the LFT and save them the time, expense, frustration, aggravation and let them enjoy their holiday w/ PCR on the way in and on the way out.

    • Anonymous says:

You don’t need a travel cayman authorization if vaccinated. It just takes 30 seconds on the travel cayman website to scan your vaccine bar code from HSA so it’s in the records for arrivals at airport. Literally 10 seconds of my time. Not really a pain. The stupid things is these day 2 5 8 tests and the ore departure PCR in England to come back. I’d ditch those for vaccinated.

      • Anonymous says:

You do need an authorization if you only have a cdc card. Waiting over a week and a half and still did not receive.

        • Anonymous says:

5:19pm. I remember when people from the USA and some here as well, were making fun of us in Cayman for having the paper cards. My my, how we have advanced and now are a part of the “Common check” worldwide program with our own QR codes whilst the backward USA still has a paper CDC card.

The USA used to lead the world in just about everything and it is such a shame to see how divisive and backwards they have become just in the last decade or so. Crumbling infrastructure, broken and divided political system, racism, extraordinary amounts of school shootings, violence and the list goes on..With all of their technology and advancements they still have not been able to put in place a simple “verifiable” vaccination card. Nearly a million dead from Covid and only about 60% of the population vaccinated, such a shame to see how political differences has been the way as to how people make decisions for their own health and survival.

      • Anonymous says:

And what if you are vaccinated in another country like Canada? Same process?

      • Caymanian says:

Yes you do if from a Country with less than 60% 1st dose vaccination rate.

Stupid I know to punish a traveller for people back home.

Many people are reluctant to get tested or report results because of the exit tests. Too many people still testing positive after three weeks. I would hope those people are actually quarantining themselves though. If they dropped the exit tests like every other country more people would report positives.

      • Anonymous says:

So drop the exit tests and let those that remain positive back out into the community to continue spread???

The utility of PCR tests may be questionable going forward:

“Scientists have discovered a “stealth version of Omicron which cannot be distinguished from other variants using the PCR tests that public health officials deploy to gain a quick picture of its spread around the world”, scientists have said.

The stealth variant has many mutations in common with standard Omicron, but it lacks a particular genetic change that allows lab-based PCR tests to be used. It has a specific deletion of a genome which means it cannot be detected.”

    https://www.euroweeklynews.com/2021/12/07/stealth-version-of-omicron-avoids-detection-on-pcr-tests/

    • Anonymous says:

That is not quite correct – it can be detected as COVID – it cannot easily be differentiated as the Omicron sub-variant. So the testing still reveals presence of COVID – but differentiating the strain is an issue.

    • Robert Mugabe IV says:

Scientists can and will say whatever they are told to by their employers in Big Pharma.
Just like the entire rushed vaccine productions worldwide, without any long term effects testing. If they had we wouldn’t have all been so excited about the Covid vaccines where immunity wanes within months of the second jab. Would anywhere near the amount of people have taken the jabs if this were known. Of course not.
Sure a lot of folk will say, ‘well it was an emergency vaccine, we needed something otherwise millions more would have died.’
After all Fear is a great motivator.
Shouldn’t we all stop using the term ‘vaccine’ until they find one?

    From this evenings international news:

“Early data from South Africa suggests the Omicron variant can partially evade protection from the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine. Researchers found there was about a fortyfold reduction in vaccine-induced antibodies that could neutralise the Omicron variant relative to an earlier strain.”

CNS: This is the same story from Reuters. I couldn’t find this one exactly – Study suggests Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine may only partially protect against Omicron

But good news, Evening Standard – Omicron: early data from South Africa suggests variant results in less severe illness

    • Anonymous says:

These studies are obviously flawed because they look for neutralizing antibodies only. Even with delta part of the vaccine induced antibodies were sufficiently different from the original strain that they were counter productive and to some extent infection enhancing. That would surely occur in this case as well and different testing is required to study that. What you very well might end up with is a vaccine that overall enhances the infectivity with Omicron (but maybe not disease severity). Time will tell.

Just get on with it and bring in vaccine passports. If you are unvaccinated and die it is preventable. Get vaccinated and you will be fine.

and if you have such a serious medical condition you should not be in public.

        • Caymanian says:

There has been reporting of several unique conditions where there were reactions such as Bell’s Palsy and there was talk also of Guillain-Barré syndrome but this was never confirmed. It might even have been confirmed to not be affected. I am not 100% sure there.

All in all there is a huge chance that there are no conditions in Cayman that this vaccine has an issue with.

My mother who has fought Cancer off twice and suffers with almost every imaginable condition took the vaccine and had no real issues after except a little injection site pain which many have had.

There is two things at play here.

          1. Damn idiots looking for a way out of not getting vaccinated and all for STUPID reasons. Some think they are so healthy it cannot possibly affect them. Marathoners have died from Covid. Gym rats have died from Covid. You name it, they have all died from Covid. Covid is not particular in how healthy you think you are.

          2. Some ill people who FEAR it might affect them with little to no evidence that it would.

Group 1 I have no use for and this might seem mean and bad but I will never apologize for it. I hope they catch Covid and get really sick to teach them a lesson. I don’t want them to die but I want them in a high level of pain. These people can cause others to die by propagating lies.

Group 2 I can more relate to. When you are really sick and I mean really sick like people battling cancer or dialysis it’s hard to take that risk especially with all the idiots out there saying stupid crap. All I can say is TRUST IN THE SCIENCE. There is no mass conspiracy going on.

          • When you watch too much leftist news says:

Ding Dong, if there are no conditions in Cayman that this vaccine has an issue with, and you are so safe taking it, then the unvaccinated should be of no issue to you. You have an obsessive disorder against natural immunity.

All ineligible kids, for starters. Omicron in SA seems to be hospitalizing an abnormally high number of kids under 5, if that matters.

          • C'Mon Now! says:

Just being a kid does not make you “medically unable” to get the vaccine.

The problem is that while that is real for a very, very, very small % of people the vast majority of people here who say they have medical issues preventing them from getting the vaccine are either mis-informed or lying for some reason.

Forbes ran a story on this in August saying:

“There are no known medical conditions which absolutely prevent a person from getting a Covid-19 vaccine.”

            https://www.forbes.com/sites/victoriaforster/2021/08/19/what-are-the-medical-exemptions-for-not-getting-a-covid-19-vaccine/?sh=1e6680ea44c5

But it did say around 5 in a million may have an allergic reaction. Even that can be managed which is why you wait after getting your shot.

So basically with our population size there is likely no one who can’t get the vaccine on these islands.

If there are any I would like to hear the reason and who told them they couldn’t and they ask them if they could buy me a PowerBall ticket the next time they travel to the U.S.

Strange how there’s more vaccinated people with covid than unvaccinated with covid in Cayman and the sister islands.

Said so in the CNS and compass just yesterday.

      Can you clarify CNS?

CNS: Cayman has an extremely high vaccination rate – over 90% of adults – so you would expect most cases to be in vaccinated people. Think about it like this: if the vaccination rate was 100% and 100 people tested positive, how many of them would you expect to be vaccinated versus unvaccinated? Does that mean the vaccine doesn’t work?

CNS gave you good schooling on how to interpret the statistics.
Here is a question for you:
Please give us a sound explanation as to why, in Cayman, the non-vaxed have far greater hospitalisation and death rates than the vaxed?

1:57, Have you been paying any attention at all the past 6 months on who is getting hospitalized and dying with COVID in America and Canada?

It is overwhelmingly the unvaccinated. This is just a simple overriding fact.

Get out of your Caymanian bubble and look around.

      • Anonymous says:

We are all exposed to whatever comes now. The vaccinated may have an immunity head start over unvaccinated. Immune system resilience can be affected by a variety of things including smoking, drinking, age, infections, autoimmune diseases, other preexisting health issues etc. A younger unvaccinated might fair better than an older vaccinated – everyone is different. The point being that each of us won’t know until we are immersed. That’s why, vaxed or not, it’s better to give our neighbours 6ft and not find out.

    • Anonymous says:

Vaccinated and unvaccinated people have died from COVID. Please do not put out the wrong information out there. Give the benefits of the vaccine but do not make it seem – take the vaccine and you will not die.

      • Caymanian says:

This statement is EXTREMELY short sighted and pointedly making a really bad point.

Let’s talk in terms everyone can understand.

Generally speaking 90% of the time a vaccinated person is in contact with the virus it will be blocked. It’s protection against severe disease and death stands at about 97%.

Now let’s compare against non vaccinated.

When you are Unvaccinated you are 20 times more likely to catch Covid under the same circumstances as being vaccinated.

Numbers out of the US shows serious illness and death is 11 times greater being unvaccinated vs vaccinated.

So it’s not that vaccinated people can not catch, get seriously ill or die from covid. It’s that the chance of this goes from 33% to 3%. This is why we take the jab.

        • Anonymous says:

You’re broadly correct but unfortunately your numbers are not correct. People can understand the terms you’ve put it in but you’ve essentially made up the numbers.

If only what you said was true, it would be fantastic. Unfortunately with the advent of Delta and now Omicron, the protection is substantially lessened.

I think anyone with any sense would still take the vaccine as it certainly confirms substantial protection from serious illness and death but it’s no where near the level you’ve stated.

      • Anonymous says:

5:18 In Cayman, the non-vaxed have far greater hospitalisation and death rates than the vaxed. This speaks volumes in support of being vaxed. Based on the local statistics the non-vaxed who are clinically eligible to get vaxed but choose notto are making a most idiotic choice.

On the other hand: If Trump supporters were true to their leader, they would get vaxed! The former prez is on record saying that the vax is a good vaccine and a safe vaccine and urged people to get vaccinated.
