(CNS): A woman who was positive for COVID-19 died at the hospital Wednesday, though no other details about this patient have been released. There were just 89 positive community cases of COVID-19 among the batch of 1,275 PCR tests conducted Tuesday. As of 8am Wednesday, Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee reported that there were now 3,866 active cases of the virus, with the first indication that what has been the runaway spread of the virus may have peaked, despite yesterday’s still relatively high cases.

With 18 people now in the hospital, the number of serious cases of COVID-19, the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, also appear to be falling. No new cases were reported in the Sister Islands, where there are now just 15 active cases of the virus.

While the country may be at the beginning of a decline in spread, there are still 4,500 people in isolation. But the Health Services Authority has also rolled out a new system for people who need isolation letters. Individuals requiring proof of isolation can still use their positive PCR result from the laboratory or request a letter online here.

A negative PCR exit result may serve as an isolation release notice or, if required, one can be requested through the form. Each request will be verified by a Public Health official to confirm those under mandatory isolation.

“Due to the number of cases in isolation, the requests for these letters through email have been substantial,” stated Medical Officer of Health Dr Samuel Williams-Rodriguez. “Within the first few days of releasing the form, we have completed over 200 requests and have caught up on all backlog. This approval process is more automated providing a faster turnaround time going forward.”

Meanwhile, according to the latest COVID vaccine results, 58,124 people (82% of the population) have had had at least one dose and 56,155 (79%) have had two. 11,171 people (16%) have received a booster shot.

“COVID death toll”? A number that does not distinguish between deaths of people who happen to have tested positive for Covid in the prior month and deaths where Clive was the cause of death. No indication that any vaccinated person has died from COVID at all in this outbreak.

Germany is about to lockdown all the unvaccinated adults by prohibiting them from all non-essential public spaces. We should be putting in a vaccine passport system now before we start getting cases of Omicron.

Eventually anti-vaxxers won’t be able to leave Cayman at all so they need to at least be able to do things here.

        • alaw says:

I am baffle as to why anti-vaxxers hate to be called anti-vaxxers!

          • Mumbichi says:

Do you like being called a vaxhole?

There are no people that self-identify as “anti-vaxxers”. There are only people who don’t want the mRNA vaccine. “Anti-vaxxer” is a strawman term used by people who wish to denigrate those who chose to not take the vaccine.

    • Anonymous says:

We have one. The HSA app allows you to carry a QR coded vax certificate on your phone or print it out. What we need are rules to make you required to produce it it enclosed, public spaces.

What if the vaccine doesn’t work well against Omicron, or what if it prevents serious illness and death but doesn’t really stop transmission?

What’s the point then, of segregated vaccinated people from unvaccinated people?

Astounding what an easy ride the media and public are giving this Govt in the midst of their total mismanagement of the situation.
Cayman went from a paranoid society scared stiff of covid to one that seems to not care less. Totally bizarre.

I think it’s a change in general. I think in general the population is over it. I certainly am. I did everything I was told to do last year and realistically if you want to get off the island and move closer to life before COVID, then we have to learn to live with it. I think that has more to do with seeing other countries learning to live with it. I doubt if PPM had managed to form a government that it would be much different. PPM pointing fingers acting like they would have managed this pandemic differently is silly. Any government would have had its challenges and it doesn’t mean I am praising PACT, but I just don’t know that PPM would have done much differently or any better. Everyone is navigating through murky waters with COVID, but in general I think the population is ready to move on and be able to move more freely.

The Governor and certain ministers pushed to open the schools too early- it’s a truism that it’s the schoolchildren who are the big spreaders here- I hardly know a family with school age kids which isn’t completely infected.
This Govt put regs in place and then did nothing to enforce them.
Have u seen the gyms ?? Covid centers if ever there was one- no one checking vaccination for entry, no social distancing , no masks …. It’s a joke.

A new Covid drug has been approved in the UK

“An antibody treatment which has been found to reduce the risk of hospitalization and death from Covid-19 by up to 79% in high-risk adults has been approved for use in the United Kingdom.

Xevudy, also known as sotrovimab, was approved for use in patients aged 12 and above by the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) on Tuesday, the MHRA said in a statement.

The drug “was found to be safe and effective at reducing the risk of hospitalisation and death in people with mild to moderate COVID-19 infection who are at an increased risk of developing severe disease,” the statement added.

Sotrovimab was developed by London-based GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) and Vir Biotechnology, based in California. It “retains activity against all tested variants of concern, including key mutations of Omicron,” according to a statement released Tuesday by maker GSK.”

  7. Cayman’s Pandemic forgotten says:

Unfortunately it’s always a drop before a huge spike comes Cayman it’s how this Covid19 trend has played out worldwide. Those heaping self praise of their great leadership and themselves by Grandiose announcements is detrimental because it’s only stands to justify and encourages those who have prematurely open us this place one month before Christmas to satisfy their elite friends who have never taken this pandemic serious describing it as the “sniffles “were being inconvenienced and have continued with their very unsafe and selfish behavior despite numerous warnings about the high level of contagiousness of this virus. Who along with the unvaccinated nut Jobs who stupidly still believe it’s a hoax despite unequivocally proof of just how deadly Covid 19 is and the huge loss of life worldwide and here now! Omicron increased level of Infection will no doubt make its way here to Cayman if is not here already and we should take the steps to safeguard and protect the vulnerable from it.

Death rate triples under PACT goveenment.

  9. Anonymous says:

Even more reason to get vaccinated. Notice where these new variants originate, centres of mass infection where no one has immunity either acquired or induced by vaccine.
This is the future, get your immunity now, help stop these variants in their tracks or others might be given the chance to evolve, rise up and eventually we might all succumb.
That’s just extreme rhetoric, I can’t believe we become that stupid not to believe in our own capabilities as as technological species, well the majority of us at least.

  10. Anonymous says:

Rip … Very sad. These people should be in heroes square. Any victim vaxed or not is a tragedy. Let’s only say good things here.

    • Anonymous says:

You have got to be kidding!
My condolences to the family & friends of the deceased but unless you are vaccinated you have done nothing to be applauded/praised for. No underlying health issues so this could have been prevented.

    • Beaumont Zodecloun says:

Thank you. I wish it were so, but it appears we have lost the ability to discuss and debate.

Condolences to the family of the deceased.

      • Big Bobo In West Bay says:

Big Beau, We are well past the discuss and debating stage about vaccinations. I am no longer going to debate with Caymanians the pros and cons of vaccinations.

We don’t have time for the virus to mutate again and the chronically stupid should not be praised for their non action.

        • Beaumont Zodecloun says:

I will register your vote for “no discussion, because I’m unable to function at that level .”

See what I did there? I ascribed a position on your behalf — which you may or may not deserve — just as you did.

What you are expressing is your opinion. Just thought you’d want to know, in case you were asked.

  11. Michael Day says:

My 6 year old followed my wife (vaccinated) and 17 year old (vaccinated) all contracted Covid. My house has been in isolation since 5th November. The only one that was ill (bad cough and fever) was the unvaccinated 6 year old.

I had the booster shot two weeks prior to the 5th. I remain negative despite my little one coughing in my face. I made no effort to avoid catching it.

My point is: get vaccinated and get the booster. That’s all. Stay safe.

  12. Anonymous says:

Not surprising given PACT’s refusal to do anything to slow the spread of the virus. Thank goodness the US is going to tighten travel rules tomorrow. That might actually do something to slow the next wave coming at Cayman.

    • Anonymous says:

Another wave is about to kick off with all the corporate Christmas parties too!

      • Anonymous says:

Doubt it. Most christmas parties are for vaccinated only and negative test pre arrival at the party for responsible firms.

        • Anonymous says:

Oh yeh, I forgot the vaccinated are invincible sorry.

        • Anonymous says:

And in the true spirit of Christmas goodwill to all men etc, the unvaccinated are somehow lesser people because they made a choice that didn’t agree with yours. Oh and good luck making sure all the servers, are vaccinated too. I don’t know how you came up with ‘most’ Christmas parties, but I know of many who don’t give a crap if you are vaccinated or not. And before all the slagging starts about me not being vaccinated, I am, and still mix with my self disclosed unvaccinated friends because they are my friends and I respect their choice. I don’t make it my business to know who is vaccinated and who isn’t.

          • Anonymous says:

The unvaccinated are making my life hell and so they are lesser people because they are seriously infringing on my right to live a normal life.

The unvaccinated should stay in their homes and not leave. If you are not concerned about people being unvaccinated then you are part of the chronically stupid too.

Another death is very sad. We all need to take precautions as this pandemic is not over, and Omicron appears to be far more contagious than earlier muttions.

“Omicron is rapidly becoming the dominant variant of the coronavirus in South Africa less than four weeks after it was first detected there, Reuters reports.

Early indications suggest Omicron may be markedly more contagious than previous variants.”

    • Anonymous says:

There is also a school of thought from some experts that Omicron could be the beginning of the end of the pandemic. Super contagious but low death rate. The markets have reacted with stock falling and what is very interesting is JP Morgan advising to buy in this dip.

“While it is likely that omicron is more transmissible, early reports suggest it may also be less deadly, which would fit into the pattern of virus evolution observed historically” – source Bloomberg

      • Anonymous says:

I saw that. It makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint: Killing the hosts isn’t as good of a survival tactic as keeping them alive for future infections. Some people will still die, but probably not any more than who die from the flu or pneumonia caused by other coronaviruses.

      • Anonymous says:

Deaths tend to lag infections by 2-3 weeks, so humanity doesn’t yet know if that wishful assumption will hold. I wouldn’t bet my life on it just yet.

        • Anonymous says:

It isn’t an assumption, it is an opinion based on the ‘suggestion’ of reports. Everything starts with hypothesis, and I do not think anyone is betting their life on it just yet.

    • Anonymous says:

Why did you leave out that omicron is likely very mild and it would be a good thing if it becomes the dominant strain?

      • Anonymous says:

Doesn’t suit the Covid Cheerleaders to put that fact in. And before the Covid Cheerleaders accuse me of being a Covid denier, I’m double vaccinated, going for the booster.

    • Anonymous says:

Yes but early indication also suggest Omicron is less virulent. If that’s the case and Omicron can overtake Delta that would be fantastic news.

    • Anonymous says:

Weren’t cases going to skyrocket upon our opening up? It’s two weeks in two days! Yet both cases and hospitalization are down. Yes deaths are up, but that is true whether one had Covid or not. Thankfully, in Cayman we know through the marl road whether one was previously ill or not. So now your kind will jump on the Omicron bandwagon. Why not wait to see how dangerous it is? Same thing was said about lambda. Remember lambda? Delta Plus? My condolences to the lady’s family.

      • Anonymous says:

I was previously sick with the flu 4 year ago, so if I die after catching COVID you can safely say it must have been that flu infection, not the COVID that was the cause of death

      • Anonymous says:

And not many cases brought in by tourists like you all were in a panic about when the reopening was stated. I’m thinking about 3-4 cases were travelers?

  14. Anonymous says:

Condolences to the woman’s family and friends.
Glad the covid numbers are lowering. Continue to wear masks and social distance. Stay out of large crowds.

    • Anonymous says:

Have you not considered that covid numbers are lower because of less reporting? I reported my asymptomatic case as a result of a home LFT, but I could have easily not, and got away with it.

      • Anonymous says:

You are a fool if you reported that.

        • Anonymous says:

Hence why recorded infections are going down, as people aren’t informing the HSA after positive LFT tests.

We could just stop testing all together then Government can celebrate about having no infections of COVID being recorded in Cayman

      • Anonymous says:

Many people are doing this because of so many reports of families quarantining for a month.

      • Anonymous says:

We all know that the positive numbers are far higher than being reported- 100’s still going to work when knowing they are positive because they can’t afford the time off. It’s selfish and totally reckless but widespread…:
