Alden rails against PACT’s management of pandemic

Alden McLaughlin MP addresses Parliament on Wednesday

(CNS): Former premier Alden McLaughlin (RED) was deeply critical of the PACT Government’s management of the COVID-19 pandemic when he spoke in Parliament this week. The veteran politician accused them of living in “some kind of parallel universe”, because despite “their preening” about how good they were, he had “found no constituency of support, no approval of the way the government has managed the COVID-19 pandemic”.

McLaughlin, who now sits on the opposition backbench, said that if he was still the premier the management would have been “very very different”.

He said that while the country had to open at some point, “I don’t know who thought that the point to reopen should be at when the virus is at its peak in terms of community spread… because that’s where we are”.

While he lauded the government for continuing the rollout of the vaccine and reaching a level of coverage he never thought possible, which he noted was largely protecting us from the worst ravages of the pandemic, he described the current rate of community spread as a “disaster”. He said it was undermining any efforts to rebuild the economy or to re-start tourism.

“The community spread of the virus at the level that it is scares people away from events, from bars, from restaurants, from stores. And… who in their right mind is going to travel to a country where the level of community spread of the virus is so high that you are almost guaranteed to get the virus for your vacation?

“And if you test positive… you are then going to be condemned to your hotel room… Who is going to pay for that privilege?” McLaughlin asked the speaker. “Without effective control of the community transmission of the virus, the economy cannot and will not ever recover.”

Only tourism destinations that have kept a lid on the spread have been able to attract visitors, he said, as he wondered how the economy would recover until the government does something about the transmission.

McLaughlin said the government had not put in place any effective measures to curtail the spread of the virus since its return after 14 months with no community transmission. He accused government of letting the virus run until it burned out, and while that might work in the long run, he said, he didn’t know how long, and in the meantime it would destroy the economy.

“Somebody has got to get their arms around this issue,” he said, as he called for the enforcement of the necessary protocols, which he claimed was not happening. Instead, PACT was organising an experiment with a cruise ship, he said, when everyone knew that cruise ships were the crucible of this COVID pandemic.

McLaughlin also highlighted the problems being created for the Cayman Islands Tourism Association (CITA), as he referred to its recent meeting and the catalogue of challenges they faced. He said the government was making the situation worse by not granting permits and by the poor management of the community spread.

You’re doing a marvelous job running the community park in your constituency Alden.

    • Anonymous says:

Alden is no longer a member of Government. He is now merely the MP for Red Bay. His power to spend government funds is no more. All he can now do is advocate. He pushed for Government to purchase the land for the park and he pushed for the development of the plan and the work done so far while he was Premier. Now however, it is the new Minister of Planning, the Hon. Julianna O’Connor Connolly and her sister minister, Hon. Sabrina Turner the MP for Prospect to complete the park.

      • Anonymous says:

Oh you poor man, no longer can you do anything but dress up really nice, collect a fat check and tell Roy what to say and do. But as far as taking care of the district of Red Bay, your lookout (12:10) person says you can not do anything.

      • Anonymous says:

Since you can not do anything, why don’t you do us all a favor and resign and let us have someone who will work for Red Bay instead of making excuses why he can not do anything. Can’t is a coward to lazy to try.

The truth about Covid is that virus anywhere means virus everywhere. Until we can somehow stop fake stories about vaccine dangers and vaccine hesitancy and help Africa with logistics to vaccinate everyone, we will always have mutations and spread. Closing borders and travel bans do nothing to prevent it and are pointless… you can’t shut down and stop travel for economic reasons either. The only long terms solutions to Covid is everyone being vaccinated and regularly boosted.

  6. Anonymous says:

The only thing you can overhauls criticise pact for is not making vaccines compulsory for everyone, which would have reduced hospitalisations and deaths, but seems the voters were against that anyway. More big news articles in the uk Sunday papers about the now 5.8m delayed cancer and other non Covid operations as 30 per cent of hospital beds are taken by Covid patients who are 90 per cent unvaccinated, if you choose not to get unvaccinated, you are very selfish. You contribute to increased spread and increased burden on hospital space that could be used for more deserving people with non Covid illnesses.

    • Anonymous says:

YOu are only half right. Being unvaccinated does not “increase the spread” since you can get covid if your vaccinated.

But it does cause more strain on hospitals.

      • Anonymous says:

Unvaccinated do spread it more than vaccinated as they are more likely to catch it and carry higher viral loads

      • Al Catraz says:

Being vaccinated lessens the severity of the infection, because your immune system has a head start. That ALSO shortens the time that you are infectious in the event you do become infected.

So, yes, vaccination decreases spread of the virus by shortening the window that a vaccinated person is infectious.

I am a physician so I want no part in an argument. But, I want to share a good study. It came from the USA NBA. The players and family last year were in isolation so they could play. They were tested daily. What was seen?? Vaccinated tested positive for 5 days and unvaccinated for 7.

In the era of coronavirus, the most interesting events – those that can realistically and quite dramatically change the lives of billions of people – hardly make it into the news. Have you heard a lot about the WHO emergency session on December 1? No, everyone was discussing a new strain, Adele’s new album and yet another cunning Russian – a close cold snap, which the European tabloid press affectionately calls “Beast from the East”
Meanwhile, the results of the session promise to be simply fateful. The member countries of the organization agreed to begin preparations for the creation of a global international treaty “to combat pandemics.” The clauses of this agreement will be binding in 194 countries of the world, that is, almost everywhere, around the globe. No, no one will harmonize them with national legislation. And no, no one will ask the opinions of the population of these countries either.

How will this global agreement will be implemented? The fact is that the WHO health regulations are binding on all member countries of the organization. A “pandemic treaty” will replace these rules with much more stringent and detailed. According to them, each government will be obligated, upon request, to provide WHO with data on all the details of diseases in the country, even if it includes personal data of citizens and facts sensitive to national security.

WHO looks like a modest Geneva office with boring instructions. However, in fact, its instructions are mandatory for doctors around the world.

    • Anonymous says:

The WHO and the EU are not fit for purpose. I wouldn’t pay either too much time if I were you. Will both be replaced within a decade.

Whether PACT or PPM has to follow Public health advice.
Common sense says when we get cold and cough dont know covid or flu. When covid test positive dont know delta or omicron. So what . The preventive measures are same and I am not repeating.
So we learnt we cant stop entry of covid but we delayed. Similarly we will not stop omicron.
Then the Public health saying any positive visitor and family contacts inquarantine until omicron test negTive is useless.
A visitor may test positive on 7th day and I need not say consequences.
Just learn from usa canada and uk and follow them. We r not better than them. We have to learn and follow them.think.

Ok, So what did Alden do for us Caymanians. Well he gave away the most beautifull part of 7 Mile Beach to Dart. Remember the land that was supposed to be our camping ground. Now Dart is building another hotel. So he and his buddies can import more slave labor, at the cost of Caymanian jobs. I truly wish this man would go and sit down and shut up. Alden you had 8 years in power. You did nothing to help your own people. You and your so called last Unity Government, sold Cayman out. Yet you expect Caymanians to live on $6.00 an hour. When food, housing, gasoline and insurance prices have risen every year. What you need to do is exit politics. Am so feed up of the way you have treated your own people. Maybe you should finally give us Caymanians something to rejoice about. What was your plan for Cayman. Oh issue more work permits, while your own people suffer. And can’t afford to live in their own country. Remember time has a way of repaying persons like you, who have left Caymanians broke, and unable to afford to live and survive in their own country. Do us all a favor, and exit politics. You only only care about you, not us Caymanians. Sad when you can only complain. I ask the question again. What was your plan. Oh keep your people down and treat them like dogs. Must be hard sitting on the other side. Then again who gave himself a raise. You did Alden, while your own people continue to suffer in their own country. You and your so called Unity Government, all you have done is make it impossible for Caymanians to live in their own country. Please do us Caymanians a huge favor exit politics. You have done enough harm. Your not part of the solution, you are the problem.

You mean…if employers are willing to hire. Many jobs aren’t even advertised. Much of hiring on-island is done by word-of-mouth or through the back-door. Your traditional job application process, vetting process & objective hire no longer exist. It’s been in a decline since ~2010, and has only accelerated. So, your best bet is to network & listen for the verbal job adverts aka “sneaky ads” & subjective recruitments that evade the traditional print advert for all to see & fairly apply for an interview or shortlisting. Cayman Islands job market is crap and its unscrupulous Human Resource practices/management are nothing short of disappointing, especially for a small island nation.

What is alden’s problem? We have stricter measures than most countries for arrivals. We have had vaccines available for almost a year and everyone will be boosted by next few weeks. We are 2 years into a pandemic that will go on for years.

No vaccinated people are dying. We can’t make policies to protect unvaccinated… I struggle to have any sympathy for people that get ill if they made a decision not to take a vaccine that is proven to be safe and protect you. They are not the priority at all – the freedoms of the vaccinated are what should drive policy and it is correct we can travel freely without quarantine.

    • Anonymous says:

We have strict measures on arrivals but with this amount of community spread, that is not the problem. There are no restrictions in place to slow transmission in the community in this wave or the ones to come.

For nearly 2 years the world has tried to stop the virus spreading. But the virus has mind of its own and is laughing at silly humans.

So what silly humans continue doing, doubling the effort? They still trying to stop spreading. Are we Homo stupid?

Vaccines reduced mortality, treatments are available and, the wild guess, 50% of the earth’s population already had Covid19.

Why do we continue testing and locking up healthy/asymptotic people perpetuating mass hysteria? Treatments must be the focus, not chasing the virus. This is common sense if we are Homo Sapient.

I am recovering from Covid19. The first week was bad, I took doctor prescribed treatments and supplements. It worked. Yesterday I had vitamin cocktail IV treatment, approved by my doctor. What a difference it made!

Cayman has an Alternative Health clinic now. Excellent addition! Ask your alternative health practitioner what treatments are right for you!

All wrong, except for the cruise ship part. That is just a really bad idea. They are over-stacked, floating petri-dishes . But everything else he said is senseless. I am in the US, and it is abundantly clear that the risk of getting Covid after all the vaccines, including the booster, is very high, but its severity is extremely low. I say that because he’s touting 14 months of being viral free, and that’s great, it worked out perfectly white trying to get people to begin vaccinations. However, you can’t run forever, you can’t hide. Covid is here to stay, and like every other virus that came before it, even when humans didn’t walk the planet, we have had to adapt to. It is how we have survived as a species.
Now, I want nothing more than to return to Cayman ASAP. It has been our only home away from home for 20+ years, but I’m not sure if I’d be perceived as a contributory factor, and our family then mistreated. I want us to come when it’s the right time to be accepted.

  42. Tainted by Association says:

Alden is the one who paraded that imbecile in front of the nation, speaking gibberish and howling at the moon, posing as the minister of health, so he should just shut up.

Alden still trying to grant as many permits as he can. He just does not get the harm he has caused.

And if the PPM was in charge, there would not be the need for permits because the borders would still be closed.

Because of what he has done the Caymanian people are now so marginalized that there is every risk of them not giving a shit, either way. Our society is overburdened by impoverished masses brought in to benefit a select few who refused to invest in their employees, or pay a living wage. We have a growing underclass, who are waking up to the fact they were sold out. Many Caymanians are spending their inheritance to survive, and are starting to see their futures as suffocating under a debt mountain propped up by a handful of Alden and Eric’s Robber-Barons.

Oh please! We have been on that train since the Caymanian Protection law was replaced with the Immigration law. At least Alden and the Progressives left us with cash in the bank to tide through us tough times.

Experience counts especially in a crisis. If you still think that money grew on trees and the last two Governments were just following the civil service program board then you have further unpleasant surprises ahead. Unfortunately, even though I won’t be surprised, I’ll be suffering right along with you.

Ummm, the Caymanian Protection Law was never replaced with anything. It was simply renamed. And then politicians, developers and even civil servants started ignoring it and even acting contrary to it.

            • Anonymous says:

And that is exactly the problem. Politicians and Civil Servants ignoring the rule of law, unfettered in their ability to provide favors for their chosen, and leaving economic ruin for Caymanians in their wake. It is a form of corruption but is facilitated by supposed regulators who are also in on the game or are unwilling to rock the boat.

            • Anonymous says:

Who ever voted that comment down is denying fact. The Caymanian Protection Law, as written in 1971, lives on today as the Immigration (Transition) Act.

Now if only our Attorney General could explain why our government has been ignoring it, and even acting contrary to it?

          • Anonymous says:

The money the Progressives left us with was in fact generated by the private sector. Not the Progressives and not the Cayman Islands Government. Some of it is blood money. 30 pieces of silver received by the Progressives in exchange for destroying the prospects of Caymanians and damaging our future sustainability. You give them credit? They led us well through the early days of Covid, but generally, they are deserving of derision. Such a shame. We once believed they were honest stewards of our future, but the truth will out.

As if you could come up with anything better Alden.. but then I guess empty barrels do indeed make the most noise.. If it were up to you and the PPM we would be shut down indefinitely.
