(CNS): The number of positive coronavirus cases recorded in the Cayman Islands since 8am on Thursday morning was not expected to be released Monday evening because Public Health is still working on how it intends to report active cases. However, according to social media and other sources, there were cases in dozens of places throughout the weekend and Monday.

These included government offices such as the busy DVDL building on Crewe Road, the planning department and government schools, with nine cases alone at Red Bay Primary and several at Savannah Primary, as well as a number at early learning centres. More offices, restaurants, bars and supermarkets in George Town are also losing staff to isolation.

CNS understands that the former health minister, Dwayne Seymour, has also tested positive for the virus but is said to be doing okay.

Despite the evidence that cases were soaring again Monday, there were no figures about the positive cases recorded since Thursday. The number of active cases, how many people are symptomatic and how many people are currently in hospital are also unknown.

Government has still not responded to numerous questions surrounding the protocols for isolation now that rapid test kits are being used widely in the community. There are also mounting concerns that people are not reporting when they are sick and are not adhering to isolation policies.

In another message to the country on Monday about the current situation, which he recorded before he headed to Glasgow, Premier Wayne Panton asked people to keep calm and not to let the pandemic pull them down. He said the surge in cases was to be expected as the virus was here now.

“We individually and collectively have to do all that we can to stop the transmission of the virus,” he said. “While having positive cases in our families, our communities and work places can be alarming, we have to appreciate the fact that we have not had any really critical illnesses from COVID.”

He said the HSA was quite capable of taking care of those that have been hospitalized.

Panton said that people are not helpless in the face of COVID-19 and urged everyone to consider the protocols to protect themselves from the virus, such as proper hygiene practices and social distancing, as well as rethinking where they are going and what they are doing to keep safe.

He said the country was not heading for a lockdown, regardless of the increasing numbers. He also urged everyone who is not yet vaccinated to get their first shot as soon as possible, and for those over 50 who had their second shot at least six months ago to get their booster shots.

The public needs to show more understanding! PACT made a huge contribution to the economy by voting themselves a raise just a few months ago. That wore them out and now they are taking a break. What do you want from them!

Numbers are not out because the PACT leader has waltzed off to Glasgow for a luxury vacay, at CI Government expense. The PACT peons will take a while to formulate a response because Panton is the PACT prime purveyor of bullchit and they are taking a while coming up with a good pile on their own.

How can we trust a government that keeps the daily numbers from us. I can not believe that we do not have the daily updates on the covid numbers and the numbers for infection for un-vaccinated and vaccinated cases. If they cannot get us the numbers daily it can only be for one of two reasons: 1) the system is not working in which case we are not ready to reopen or 2) they are purposely keeping them from us give us the facts or give us a government that will. The people can deal with facts but not incompetence.

    • Anonymous says:

It is because the number is higher in the vaccinated than unvaccianted and they don’t want to admit they are wrong.

      • Anonymous says:

What a ridiculous comment. Of course more cases are vaccinated – 80% of the island have been vaccinated. If you have 1000 people, and 80% are vaccinated, if 50% of vaccinated get COVID that’s 400 people. If 100% of unvaccinated get COVID that’s 200 people. Case numbers will always be higher as vaccinated vs unvaxed as there is such a high vax rate. That doesn’t stop the fact the vaccines protects you hugely and reduces chance of getting it or transmitting it. No one in the history of COVID 19 since late 2019 ever said vaccines stop you catching and transmitting it. It doe shwover reduce the likelihood and prevent serious illness.

        • tom says:

why are people so quick to villainize the unvaccinated for making a choice if the vaccinated are protected? why do they care? it cant be because the unvaxxed are a threat both choices can carry and spred. in my opinion i think people just want to fortify their decision by shaming those who feel the odds for risk vs reward don’t add up. everyone needs to respect each others personal decision and move on. If the number of Covid case’s are in 80% of the vaccinated population then why bother taking a chance on an experiment that could have life long damaging affects? The island has had 2 deaths, and 2400+ cases. thats roughly 0.001 % chance of death, so where is the panic and emergency?

Government says that it has a ‘plan’. From what we know neither the science nor the numbers support that plan, but government is going to stick to that plan even if it kills you.

  11. Anonymous says:

Section 11(1) of our Constitution prohibits government from interfering with our right to receive information that enables us to enjoy our guaranteed freedom of expression. In my view the current refusal of government to release any Covid information that undermines their ‘we have this under control’ narrative is a violation of the Constitution.

I guess that the rule of law has joined transparency as a casualty of the government’s plan.

    11. (1) No person shall be hindered by government in the enjoyment of his or her freedom of expression, which includes freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference, and freedom from interference with his or her correspondence or other means of communication.

  12. Anonymous says:

    There are 3 options. 1) the government is utterly incompetent and has lost control of this outbreak;
    2) the government is suppressing information that is readily available in order to deceive the public; or
    3) both of the above are true.

If we had an opposition that was worth 10% of the money they are being paid then they would call the government out on this.

    • Yall Knoit says:

Can someone who loves their country please start getting the numbers out anonymously?

  17. Anonymous says:

There is only so much a government can do. People need to take responsibility. There has been 18 months of this pandemic now and likely covid will be around for at least the next 5 years, so the only option is to open up on November 20 and follow the known science. Everyone by now should be doing:

    1. Vaccinated by now and get booster in next few months – we know Pfizer works against delta and reduces chances of transmission, catching it or getting seriously ill
    2. Avoid crowded places as much as possible
    3. Social distance as much as possible in supermarkets etc
    4. West a mask when in close contact places
    5. Regularly sanitize and wash your hands

    Then we will be fine.

    • Anonymous says:

You’re absolutely right 8:26, there is only so much a Govt can do. One of the first things they should be doing is releasing accurate sources of information so that people can act on and assume their own responsibility. People are being asked to make sacrifices but it’s not being supported with accurate information to act with. It’s no different than me knowing the suns UV intensity is going to increase dramatically for the next few weeks, but not telling anyone how much and yet asking everyone go to about their business wrapped in tinfoil and finding shade whenever they can. 🌞

So, if it’s that easy, ask yourself, if people aren’t doing that, do we let them spread the virus to others – making others sick, businesses suffer, families suffer, or prosecute them using COVID laws?
Wouldn’t it be wise to have laws that people can follow, or just let everyone do what they want?

  21. Maybe says:

With actual numbers people would change heir behavior.

Or perhaps the Gov’t could mandate tighter restrictions, we really can still do pretty much anything we want.

Maybe that is fine and is what we as a society in Cayman want and or need but it would be good to have a public discussion about the reasons for the current approach.

If we are taking a cue from the mother country this article is interesting. The most important thing is vaccination.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/02/briefing/britain-covid-cases-restrictions.html

But maybe if we look at other places we might want to have a ban on most indoor activities at the moment and be focusing on getting access to vaccine for the 5-11 children whose parents are comfortable with this. Shots will most likely start in the U.S. this week.

When it comes to good governance Cayman is often lacking. We know this and sometimes it is just embarrassing such as having a convicted drug dealer as the Minister of Tourism and Transport, or Big Mac involved at all at this point. Or some committee looks the other way for a connected developer. We have a real laundry lists of things that never should have happened and an even bigger list of things that could be done better.

I don’t think most people here fully appreciate how this is likely the biggest failure of Government in the Cayman Islands history. We are not taking actions that we have seen work in other places in the world. Most likely because of CIG’s inaction in terms of restrictions and vaccine mandates for frontline workers etc. people will get needlessly sick and perhaps die.

If we get through this without many having debilitating illness and some loss of life it will be through luck and having warm weather, not because of action by the CIG and Public Health measure.

Whatever happens this should have been handled better with more communication from the PACT and frankly the PPM before them.

I fear that Cayman has the government that as they say “we deserve” and we will bear needless emotional, economic and physical scars from this for generations to come.

Some seem to forget this is not the UK and the Covid 19 situation here has a far greater effect and consequences for us all ! An increased infection rate after the 20 th Will be unsustainable for this little island no matter what they say or tell you . You cannot defy the science and it’s obvious vaccines without proven protective measures will not work to contain and control this Covid 19 virus !

  24. Anonymous says:

Wow. What kind of government withholds this information in a pandemic? Scumbags. We are a democracy not a dictatorship. release the data

  25. Anonymous says:

The messaging from the Premier and the government comes across to many people as follows…

    1. Reminding the government’s controlling entities within the tourism sector that the borders will be open on November 20, 2021 irrespective of the costs to the domestic economy and the health and lives of the residents of the Cayman Islands.

    2. Reminding the residents of the Cayman Islands how they should think, feel and conduct themselves. Letting the residents of the Cayman Islands know that, despite the fact that the virus is out of control as a result of the government’s decision to relax the COVID-19 suppression measures, it is up to the residents to control the virus and prevent the worst possible outcomes.

I think that many people hear the government saying that their plans are working and don’t believe what they are saying based on what they are personally seeing and experiencing.

The silence is deafening. Two questions when will the government approve vaccines for over 5 year olds and when will government mandate the Civil service to be vaccinated. Get on with it. We have everything we need except a government that can make a serious decision who is in fear of losing votes or upsetting the anti vaccine religion excuse camp.

    • Anonymous says:

The over 5 year olds dont need vaccinating, as it is barely even an illness in children. The schools should remain open, no testing, treat it like flu – feel ill, stay home, come back when feeling better.

The faster this runs through the schools, the faster kids get immunity, the faster we can get back to normal.

      • Anonymous says:

You misunderstand the whole basis for public health vaccination. It is NOT to protect the individual (although that is a helpful side-effect).

        • Anonymous says:

Everyone who can be vaccinated should be vaccinated by now. If you can be vaccinated but have not done so – you are responsible for your own outcomes.

Govt resources should be focused on properly and comprehensively protecting those who are vulnerable and unable to be vaccinated, not squandering money and time on this whole school omnishambles.

By attempting to slow the spread in schools, Govt is simply prolonging the issue and wasting money. All it does is increase the amount of time that an unvaccinated group (children) are likely to carry and transmit covid – (i.e. the exact opposite of what vaccination programs are intended to achieve).

That is why most other countries have or are abandoning that approach now.

And to add a little context, roughly 90% of those that died and are in hospital weren’t vaccinated. The vaccination rate is just about 70% in Bermuda, or about 11,000 less people vaccinated than Cayman for a similar sized population. It is one of the most densely populated countries in the world, and has an older population than Cayman. The comparisons with Bermuda are not apples to apples, nor a predictor of what will happen here.

I have supported the current Premier, the Honorable Premier Wayne Panton up until this present moment but this is going to be his own own downfall when the next election rolls around. The COVID Plans he has in place are not going to work.
We are going in the same direction that Bermuda was in July/August. I personally think that he should either lockdown the country for a few weeks until things are under control and not open the Borders until next year. This is the worst the Cayman Islands have ever been since the pandemic began in 2019/2020. Instead of being in Scotland attending the Climate Conference, he should be here taking care of his own people and managing the number of cases that we are experiencing right now. We have not had an update on the number of active cases since last Thursday, 28th October, 2021.

I hate to be a Debbie Downer but we will be experiencing a lot more hospital admissions in the coming weeks that we will have to deal with. As of 1.11.2021 Bermuda has recorded 101 deaths. That will be our position in a few weeks time.
The Premier is not listening to his own Cayman people. He is trying to protect and please the money hungry people like CITA, Bovell’s, Crighton’s, Thompson’s, Paul Pearson, Dart etc. They do not have the Cayman people at heart and never will. It has always been about money, nothing else. All they are worried about is the money in their Bank accounts.

Good luck and God Bless these Beautiful Cayman Islands that I have called home for the last 60+ years.

Panton was made by money and so therefore he follows the money.
This dude has millions of dollars for many years and did nothing to help his own in his district, only when it’s time for election he throws a few dollars around for the fools to follow,. But in the end he doesn’t care for his own people just those mentioned with money,
Just remember Panton you can’t take it all with you when you die.

If they provide the numbers they know it will send the villagers into a tailspin. 😂

Fear will get the anti vaccinators villagers vaccinated. A few deaths and the rush for vaccines will start.

If they are still deciding how to determine active cases (presumably because they have to decide how to determine “recovered”) they can still report new cases.

Not sure why they arent doing this. Is it because they are deciding whether to include only professionally given PCR tests or to also self-tested and self-reported lateral flow positives.

  36. James says:

Public Health is still working on how it intends to report active cases? This shouldnt stop them reporting the number of new cases each day. Where is the transparency we were promised from this government? I guess it left with the Premier when he went to the UK during the biggest health crisis we have ever faced.

    • Anonymous says:

YES. Active cases require some discretionary decisions (when is a person considered “recovered”?).

But confirmed positives is a hard, objective number. Why not release these?

  37. Caymanian says:

I knew this would come. Now we will not get #’s because they are so bad.

  38. AnonyMUST says:

This is a joke. I am so dissapointed in the lack of information here. Yet we are ready? Yet they hired more staff? How is it we finally have a lateral flow test policy and no test available for sale on island? How is it they want to implement this policy without considering the purchasing of these, may not be attainable for many. The schools will not provide to the whole household. This man made TWO WHOLE press realeases this weekend, in lieu of facts to calm and reassure, push THAT narrative instead of fix, address the current issues or uphold transparent release of data. Do not pacify us. Im over it. I dont feel very confident that should we be put in an overwhelming situation we have resources, the best team or response ready if they feed and push what they want to push to us when they want to push it. Im looking next for DISHONESTY in the numbers and details of things. First they blame the community for not being ready to open borders!? NO,the government wasnt ready! Now they feeding us bull and controlling what they want to realease.

CNS, u dont always get it right but thank you for bringing many of your recent topics to light and thank you for being impartial in doing so. It is stinking loud of politricks in low grade media.

This article lead-in sez: The number of positive coronavirus cases was not expected to be released Monday evening because “Public Health is still working on how it intends to report active cases”.
Translation: Government is not releasing the figures because they are doodying their pants and trying to figure out how to spin the Covid figures so as not make Panton and his puppets look like the incompetent dimbulbs that they are. So, where is Panton right now? Burning the midnight oil in his office trying to map out the battle against the rising Covid numbers? Nope. Guess again.

I am calm I am very calm. Treating Covid is very difficult. It is harder than counting. So far it seems those in charge of treating Covid are struggling to keep count. Carry on.

What about the several cases reported at Northward Prison this weekend? More than 11 cases and why has nothing been done to report this to the public? They are being kept together with the positive cases! Government is not doing good enough!

  42. Anonymous says:

Its because the HSA lab is an absolute mess. Someone needs to ask where all the scientists are.

  43. C'Mon Now! says:

I’m trying to understand what has changed with reporting and needs to be figured out.

The PACT should be embarrassed and perhaps some people fired.

    This is beyond ridiculous.

This isn’t something trivial. We are talking about people’s lives here.

Where are the governor and Dr. Lee at this point?

    • Anonymous says:

How is this on the Governor or Dr. Lee? One minute everyone bitching about the Governor for overstepping and everyone else whining about why we’re giving the foreign Doctor so much credit (no wonder the poor dude is going home).

Hold the politicians accountable. How close are they to replacing Dr. Lee? and with who? and why TF is Wayne overseas at a climate conference that will bear no fruit?!

      • Anonymous says:

I think the point is that PACT have probably silenced Dr. Lee and public health officials somehow and Wayne had already stated the Gov. as only appearing with them by invitation when they felt he had something to say.

The buck clearly stops with Wayne, but he is off on a jolly.

  44. Anonymous says:

Wayne Mr Premier Sir, maintaining a positive message is one thing, maintaining an irresponsible bluff instead of keeping the population informed is quite another. I had faith when you were elected, frankly about now I’m pretty disgusted

People that follow no rules complaining about the ones who make the rules is all that is happening. Same Circus, same clowns, same lame act. People will get what they deserve no matter how much drama they can generate. Will they try and deserve better? Not a chance. Watch as God does his thing while Humans pretend it’s all abut me. If you understand this, Patience. If not fight, hate, complain, the wonder why your life sucks. We will all end up in the same place but we will all be different.

Chinese vaccine works so great then why is China in lockdown? Why would you want a vaccine that doesn’t work? You want our people to die?

      • Anonymous says:

China is choosing not to live with Covid. They have a zero Covid policy. We will as well, once we realize 200 dead wasn’t worth it. Carry on.

Did this govt recently promise to do a press conference every week? Lack of data and comms is really bad for letting gossip spread. And telling people not to listen to gossip when they don’t have any real info is just tone deaf.

  50. Anonymous says:

That’s because they are irrelevant and serve no other purpose than to further incite irrational fear.

All testing at this stage of the game should be for covid antibodies, not for covid.
