Hospital admission increase worries CMO

(CNS): UPDATED: There are now 29 people admitted to either the Cayman Islands Hospital or Health City, six more than yesterday, as the number of people infected with SARS-CoV-2 grows. Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee said he was worried by the increase in elderly people being admitted to hospital with COVID-19, the disease caused by the virus, and urged the community to take precautions to slow its spread.

Officials also said Tuesday evening that another 192 positive cases had been recorded as of 8am that morning, just one of which was in a traveller. There are now 4,045 active cases of COVID-19 in Cayman with 4,633 people in isolation

Across all three hospitals, 55 beds have been set aside for COVID-19 patients, but more than half of those beds are already being used, reducing the wiggle room health services have before regular services start to be impacted.

In a video message on Tuesday, Dr Lee said that 25 of the 29 people in hospital (86%) are unvaccinated.

More than half of the COVID patients currently admitted need help breathing. One is on a ventilator, another needs “respiratory assistance in the form of a mask with additional pressure support” and another 13 are being given additional oxygen, he said.

A resident from the Pines Retirement Home, where there was an outbreak of COVID-19 at the weekend, is among those who have been admitted to hospital.

Most of the 29 COVID patients are older people who, whether vaccinated or not, are more vulnerable to this coronavirus, and the community should be especially careful when visiting the elderly and those with additional health problems.

“With these groups of people, please remember to wear your masks, to avoid hugging them, keep to your hand hygiene and distancing when you can,” the CMO said, adding that if possible people should take a lateral flow test and make sure they are negative before visiting a vulnerable or elderly person.

He also urged people to wear masks properly, saying he had seen people in businesses not wearing masks properly and removing them to speak to people, which is exactly what people should not do because that is when the virus spreads most easily.

According to figures released on Tuesday morning one in 18 people in Cayman, or 4,047 individuals, are currently infected with the virus.

In a video message reviewing last week’s trends in coronavirus data, Deputy Medical Officer of Health Dr Eryka Simmons revealed that between 14 and 20 November, there were 1,068 new positive cases of the virus, with a daily average of 153, which is down from over 200 during the previous week.

The average age of those being infected is 31, and Dr Simmons said that most cases are in people in the workforce, though six babies and 27 people over the age of 70 were infected last week. 66% of those infected were unvaccinated.

“Horrific” vaccine-resistant variant evolution B.1.1.529, with an unusual constellation of mutations, is already on the loose internationally, and will likely be named Epsilon by WHO on Friday. Herd death is not a workable public health strategy and we are on the frontlines of pre-sequenced contact.

    • Anonymous says:

If you can back off from fear mongering for a few minutes and check out the facts regarding B.1.1.529, you will find that scientists are indeed “concerned” about such a mutated Covid virus, but have not done enough research to give an opinion as to how it relates to current vaccines. Nor have they formed an opinion as to the R0 of this variant. Take a breath and come back when you have some clinical/science-based facts.

Italy has taken another common sense step to limiting the spread of Covid today. Too bad common sense is not present within PACT.

“Italy has unveiled new Covid measures, set to come into force on 6 December, that will ban unvaccinated people from entering venues including cinemas, restaurants and sports events (see also 15:17).

“We are seeing the situation in bordering countries is very serious and we also see that the situation in Italy is gradually but constantly getting worse,” the prime minister, Mario Draghi, told reporters after the cabinet approved the new rules.

“We want to be very prudent to try to safeguard what Italians have achieved in the last year.”

From 15 December, mandatory vaccination will be extended to include all school staff, police and the military. Healthcare workers are already required to be vaccinated.

Booster shots, currently available to people aged 40-plus, will be made available to all adults.”

This article and this release shows just how much the vaccine works and how stupid you are to not get it. By my calculations and some basic maths applied, given 5000 people on island with covid out of 71000, where 66 per cent of the total cases are in unvaccinated, and 80% of the entire population are vaxed, then currently that means:

3% of all vaccinated people in cayman have covid
23% of all unvaccinated people in cayman have covid

Just shows what we know – if you are vaxed your less likely to get it, less likely to spread it, and less likely to die from it.

            • Anonymous says:

If 100% of the population was vaccinated do you believe the virus will stop? You don’t understand how this type of virus works even for those who are fully vaccinated so you bring in the “what about the children” argument because you don’t understand the risks to children either. You are operating on pure fear and evidently not keeping up with science or reason. I was vaccinated 8 months ago to protect myself.

          • Anonymous says:

Because a) you can still catch the disease even if less likely to do so and b) that unvaccinated person will, if they get seriously il, tie up a hospital bed and resources that I could need if I fall ill for another reason. And then of course there are all the restrictions being imposed on the vaccinated because of the rate of transmission created by unvaccinated people. Other than that, nothing.

            • Anonymous says:

Why would the hospital beds be tied up if treatments other than the vaccine that are up to 95% effective were available? How many global deaths have been reported because there weren’t enough hospital beds? Do you even know? Your arguments are completely baseless.

I am 3X vaxxed. I am also aware that I can still get Covid and Long Covid and that the probability of an unvaccinated person transmitting Covid is significantly higher than a vaccinated person transmitting Covid. That is one of the reasons why I am in favour of a vaccine mandate in relation to access to optional public areas like restaurants and cinemas.

    • Anonymous says:

You have a healthy sense of precaution. Transmissibility from vaxed/unvaxed is actually the same, while positive. The vaxed hopefully having a shorter infection and transmissibility period. Being vaccinated is a bit like wearing chainmail to a gunfight: none of us know how, or if, it will work if we get shot. The fifth waves demonstrate that we should continue to stay away from kooks that are dancing around, out of their trenches, trying to test their mettle. They’re going to get shot, and maybe more than once.

      • Anonymous says:

The vaxxed have a 40% lower probability of being infected and therefore of transmitting the virus. It is much safer being in a public space such as a restaurant if all staff and patrons are vaxxed. The unvaxxed pose an unacceptable risk in such environments.

      • Anonymous says:

Speaking of kooks, I witnessed two women in line having a talk with one pulling their mask down to talk and one man in the same line with his mask below his nose. This was not at a small store. This was at one of the islands nicest large grocery stores, and no one is adhering to maintaining social distancing there at all. Vaccinated or not, this behavior negates everything we did right for so long to slow the pandemic from spreading. People cannot be trusted to do the right thing.

    • Anonymous says:

Agreed. I would like the opportunity to take my family to a restaurant with a 40% lower risk of Covid infection. Why should the unvaccinated be the ones to control the risks we are forced to take in this ‘new normal’?

Sweetie, we’ll all be gone soon, and you can be left with your horrible selves to figure out what went wrong.

No evidence whatsoever that unvaccinated spread the virus at a higher rate than vaccinated.

      CDC has admitted this.

Ireland, Gibraltar, Israel having their worst outbreaks AFTER reaching >80% vaccination rate also confirms this.

Get vaccinated because it lowers symptoms. Don’t ask for government mandates, it never ends well.

Good advice from the WHO this morning for the ‘we are vaccinated so we can ignore public health protocols’ crowd.

Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a WHO media briefing:…

“that while vaccines save lives, they do not fully prevent Covid transmission, and in the case of Delta, vaccines reduce transmission by just 40%.

He said many countries have a “false sense of security” that vaccines have ended the pandemic and a belief that vaccinated people do not need to take precautions.

He said: “We cannot say this clearly enough: even if you are vaccinated, continue to take precautions to prevent becoming infected yourself, and to infecting someone else who could die.”

Not to let simple facts and maths get in the way of fear and irrationality, but a look at the latest CDC figures in America is worth a moment of your time before you spontaneously combust of total fear as the winter brings a SURGE in RESPIRATORY diseases!! (OMG! Who knew we’d get sick in winter? Its never happened before apart from every winter!) Read the below quote from Table 3 on the link below –
“For deaths with conditions or causes in addition to COVID-19, on average, there were 4.0 additional conditions or causes per death. “

CDC acknowledges that 94% of all Covid attributable deaths had co-morbidities, and over 60% of them had 4 (yes, FOUR). CDC also states that of all deaths in America in past 20 months among those under the age of 29 (approx. 180,000) that Covid was ‘involved’ in 5,000 of them – that would be 0.03%….when are you going to calm down, stop vaccinating people who don’t need to be vaccinated and just think rationally?
CDC further goes on to show that of 6.2M deaths in USA in 20 months, 765,000 are ‘attributable’ to Covid – that’s not even 13%…and of that 13%, at least 12% had underlying conditions, 10% had 4 (FOUR).
I’m lost as to how to get thru to people that this is a massive, massive over reach and the vaccines are wholly unnecessary for most. If you’ve never taken a flu vax, don’t be taking a Covid vax UNLESS you’ve developed an underlying condition in recent months. If you want to take one, do. But do not take it and try to make it that everyone should have one.
And ask yourself how many ‘boosters’ you’re willing to inject for a virus that won’t harm you? It sure won’t stop you spreading it so that argument about saving Granny is utter nonsense. And you wont be able to travel if that’s why you took it, because they’ll switch your status to un-vaxd at the drop of a hat.
Ask yourself – wtf is wrong with you that you’re panicking like a little child going to the dentist for the first time? Grow up and wake up before its too late.

    • Houston we have a problem! says:

When you can’t or won’t do simple math correctly your argument loses.

      5k/180k = 2.77% not 0.03%

That is off by a factor of 90+.

As for your other math relating to underlying conditions, you can have underlying conditions for a long-time and live a quality life. That is what modern medicine allows. Diabetes, heart disease, being overweight or being a cancer survivor are not immediate death sentences.

It is incredibly disrespectful to minimize the needless or accelerated loss of life as well as the damage that has been done to those who survived.

We all saw the world before the introduction of the vaccine and if you think that was normal or acceptable then there is not much I can do to change your mind. But understand this you are a fool in the classic sense as you are acting unwisely. It may come back to haunt you or it may not. As you know the probability is on your side, but it is not to the extent you seem to believe.

Have a nice day, please wear your mask and stop passing bad information about.

I am not sure how else to say this. Unvaccinated were mostly elderly and children. Its likely that most of the elders cannot get the vaccine because of some underlying problems. Children are yet to he vaccinated.

So why again are the unvaccinated been blamed? Perhaps we need to know from the number of unvaccinated how many is unable to get the shot due to underlying conditions?

The risk of death from Covid for unvaccinated elderly is HUGE compared to any risk from the vaccines available. Ask yourself how many hospitals worldwide are full of people dying from a vaccine. Answer none. Underlying health problems that prevent vaccination in a country with 1 in 20 infected are not the reason our hospitals are full of unvaccinated people at risk of death. The unvaccinated are unvaccinated because of fear, misinformation and are now literally dying of ignorance. Anti Vax Churches here have a Christian duty to change their advice, now that the risk of covid is so real. The situation is very different to that a year ago, the hospitals WILL fill and more will die. Please take the vaccine today. Protect yourself, your family and your country. The threat is form our own unvaccinated community not from outside.

Intelligent logical people should be able to grasp the clear evidence:
After over 100,000 doses of vax administered in the islands there are zero death certificates listing the vax as a primary or contributing cause of death. There is no statistical evidence of excess deaths in the islands that would point to post vax increased mortality. No statistical or even sound anecdotal evidence of any serious injury attributable to the vaccine. If the vaccine were causing serous injury or death, in this closed community, it would be talked far and wide, impossible to hide. Tin hat fools here believe in the myths being spewed by anti-vax tin hats in the USA, UK, EU and other huge populations where sorting truth from fiction is vastly more difficult and lies and liars harder to expose. Here the facts speak loudly and clearly. If the vax was as deadly or harmful as the tin hat fools say, the islands’ hospitals and funeral homes would see an increase in business attributable to vaccine side effects, but that is not happening. So far no one can give us any verifiable local evidence to support their resistance to the vaccine. The best they can do is parrot anti-vax tripe originating from fringe tin hat loonies. Perhaps you or someone else here can share with us some informed and educated reasons for resisting the vax, other than properly diagnosed underlying conditions that make the person a clinically poor candidate for the vaccine. Believing in tin hat theories is not a disqualifying condition.

With more “regular” hospital beds assigned to covid care, the care for other medical cases will decrease, people will not attend to critical situations and have more heart attacks, strokes etc. at home, than usual.

You keep playing Russian roulette with 5 bullets in the chamber if you want – doesn’t stop the reality that if you are not vaccinated you are WAY more likely to get infected and hospitalized.
