COVID sinks Pirates Week Festival

| 09/11/2021 | 38 Comments

(CNS): Officials from the Ministry of Culture have announced that the annual Pirates Week Festival is cancelled, with the exception of the 41st Pirates Week 5k Sea Swim on Saturday, 13 November, which starts at 7am at Governor’s Beach, with registration from 6am to 6:45am. Discussions are underway for possible firework displays in various districts, but the landing, parade and district day activities have been postponed due to safety concerns with the ongoing community spread of COVID-19.

No replacement date has been set. Unofficial private sector events are still scheduled in and around George Town, but the traditional pirate party has been impacted for a second year by the virus.

We could mandate pirate outfits for unvaccinated arrivals – must include a full mask and eye patch

Why don’t we replace it with “Christian Heritage Week”
We can have McBeater as the MC

Bring back the old jump-up, that was a good party.

Move the event to the end of November problem solved

This is stupid. If the PACT government is going to open the borders on November 20, 2021 there is no reason to cancel this event.

Now here’s a bit of good news for a change

I say, sink that shit forever!

Said the old fuddy duddy yelling at the kids to get off the lawn in the same breath..
There are a LOT of people that attend the events. Who cares what YOU think about it!! Nobody does, that’s who.

Same goes for that dry-hump-in-the-street-like-dogs events Batabano and Braccanal. Tawdry, nasty, drunken Parades of Shame. Both events used to be family friendly, but not any more. Attach some civility standards, and I will be onboard and even contribute toward funding them, because I recognise that both events do have some modicum of community togetherness.

People should be wearing masks and avoiding crowded bars and party events. Don’t get me wrong, I love to party, but thousands of people in tight areas getting on it all night isn’t a great idea when we are in our first wave and some stupid unvaccinated people are having a ‘cabal’ breakdown over a few people in hospital.

Agreed. Vaccinated or not, why take unnecessary chances. People do not think, “if I get it, it will disrupt people around me.” Inconsiderate and selfish.

      • Anonymous says:

but I was planning to wear a mask. and a hat and a plastic sword.

        It is an outdoor event…
You are still going to have people at outdoor bars whether they are dressed in pirate gear or not.
I know a bunch of y’all are staying home but just go have a drive around. Bars are hoppin’.

Tourists won’t be gathering in large groups. Pirate’s week parties and parades draw crowds. There is the difference.

To 09/11/2021 at 6:57pm: Yes, sure; because THOUSANDS will flock to Harbour Drive as in years go by. Never mind risking contracting COVID. You can have your own float and street dance, buddy. You are on your own.

Come on PACT, we’re ready for this !! – borders are opening a week after, this would be a perfect opportunity to soft test the late stage fundamentals of ‘The Plan’

Is this what our Tourism partners want? Seriously, I thought we were told to just live with COVID-19 as we have to open up for our tourism market to survive. Why are we now canceling events while COVID is so “easy” for us all to live with?

    • Anonymous says:

Dude, can you imagine how hard it must be to seek sponsorship for a party during a pandemic? It’s not only about social distancing. It’s also about the feasibility and finances of hosting such a large festival.

    • Anonymous says:

Let’s be realistic. We are in the middle of a wave which will take another month or two to work its way through the island.

Even the most ardent supporters of the return of tourism understand that we can’t just be negligent and have large gatherings at this stage.

In any case, the hospital is about two weeks from being full so get ready for the cancellation of a lot more than pirates week.

Good, all these pirates annoy me. Smug, self loving kids.

I’ve heard that local bars are doing an unofficial one. Great work guys, again putting your $$ ahead of the livelihoods of the many. Unmitigated disaster.

Does the second “I” stand for Intelligence or something else?

I’m confused. Can we still get nekked in the streets and rub up on strangers or not?

    • Anonymous says:

Dumba$$ That’s Batabano and CayMas not Pirate’s Week. Pay attention Bobo

      • Anonymous says:

See now that’s where you wrong. More people have been murdered at Pirates Week than Batabano and CayMas combined. Prove me wrong.

      • Anonymous says:

Plenty get nekked and bump and grind at the Pirate’s Week St Dance.

        That’s a fact – 100%

        • Anonymous says:

Remember the Pirate’s Week attack on the potted plant a while back, that was some entertaining video!

No one nekked (at least on video) but a whole lot of grinding and jumping.

I had to keep it away from my lady friend as there was no way I could duplicate the effort!
