3,340 people currently infected with COVID-19

(CNS): The number of active COVID-19 cases soared again over the weekend with another 714 people positive for SARS-CoV-2 from a batch of over 4,000 tests, 40 of whom were travellers testing positive at the end of their isolation period. As of 8am Tuesday morning, there were 3,340 active cases of the virus and 3,956 people are currently in quarantine as the spread of the coronavirus shows no sign of slowing down just days before isolation restrictions are to be lifted for vaccinated travellers.

In the figures that were released 10pm Tuesday night, there were 21 COVID-19 patients admitted to hospital but there are no statistics on how many more people are symptomatic but remain at home.

Faith Hospital confirmed that 60 of those 3,340 active cases were in the Sister Islands, with eight of those identified since Friday. There have been 105 total cases recorded in Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, with 45 people now recovered. Out of the total number of cases in the Sister Islands, 55 were fully vaccinated, six were partially vaccinated and 44 were unvaccinated.

Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee confirmed the death of two people at the weekend who had been admitted to hospital with other medical issues. There have now been a total of four COVID-related deaths in the Cayman Islands since the confirmed arrival of the coronavirus here in March last year.

Both of the deaths over the last few days are considered COVID-related because the virus is listed as a contributory factor for the cause of death on the death certificate. “In both of these cases, the people had a lot of other medical problems and were very sick and, in both cases, it was not unexpected that they passed,” the CMO stated while speaking on Radio Cayman on Tuesday.

He noted that death certificates list all contributory factors to a person’s death. However, if COVID-19 is completely unrelated to the death, it will not be listed as a cause or contributing factor. For example, if someone dies in a car accident and it is later discovered that the person was COVID-19 positive, the death would not be listed as a COVID-19 related death, as the infection played no role in the person’s death.

The Ministry of Health and Wellness pointed out in the latest report that, according to guidelines issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), a death due to COVID-19 is defined for surveillance purposes as “a death resulting from a clinically compatible illness, in a probable or confirmed COVID-19 case, unless there is a clear alternative cause of death that cannot be related to COVID disease (e.g. trauma)”.

The WHO guidelines further stipulate that a “death due to COVID-19 may not be attributed to another disease (e.g. cancer) and should be counted independently of preexisting conditions that are suspected of triggering a severe course of COVID-19”. The WHO COVID-19 death reporting guidelines can be found in full here.

The vaccination clinics, which were closed after supplies ran out last week, opened again on Tuesday. But as of yesterday morning, the number of people who have had at least one shot remained at 57,357 or 81% of the population.

Also wondering why it has taken PACT so long to put up the field hospital?

  2. Reduce Isolation Days says:

That’s way too many people to be in isolation. Would be great if we followed NHS and CDC guidelines on how long it is necessary to isolate. 10 days and no need for exit PCR. PCRs can still detect covid even if the person is no longer able to transmit the virus. Mental health is taking a toll and the government mandates are extremely restrictive and should be updated to reflect current protocols especially those in the UK who they repeatedly say they are meant to follow.

    From NHS website:
“If you test positive, your self-isolation period includes the day your symptoms started (or the day you had the test, if you did not have symptoms) and the next 10 full days.”

    From CDC:
“For most children and adults with symptomatic SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, infection, isolation, and precautions can be discontinued 10 days after symptom onset and after resolution of fever for at least 24 hours and improvement of other symptoms.”

“Patients who have recovered from COVID-19 can continue to have detectable SARS-CoV-2 RNA in upper respiratory specimens for up to 3 months after illness onset. However, replication-competent virus has not been reliably recovered and infectiousness is unlikely.”

Why pick countries with some of the highest per capita Covid death rates as the ones to follow?

      • Anonymous says:

Because the profit mongers want us to ignore the history of this pandemic!

        • Anonymous says:

Pretty neat that crony capitalists, oligarchs, millionaires and billionaires are basically admitting the economy is actually a Ponzi scheme that requires health risks including deaths to survive

Yes, you are right. We should be following Russia.

      • Anonymous says:

I think the point is not against isolation but that it is not sustainable to keep people in quarantine for longer than necessary if they have already tested positive and are no longer transmitting the virus.

Agreed sir. But who is advising our Govt.
This has been the practice in uk since pandemic started.
I think our Health advisors are not bold enough to take medical decisions and Govt getting blame.

The Uk are a brilliant example of how to live with covid and we should be following them. Hopefully these people running cayman can’t take the Uk lead in how to be fully open and successfully live with covid.

So much unnecessary panic and fear and ‘cabal’ lies on here.

    People need to relax.

The laters studies today (respected official studies in the us and Uk, not Facebook lies) prove that People who have had a booster jab are half as likely to test positive for Covid than those who had their second dose six months ago.

The latest data also revealed that unvaccinated people are five times more likely to be infected than those who have had their top-up jab.

Just get your booster between now and Christmas when it’s your turn, social distance and mask up, and don’t go to crowded gatherings like nightclubs, busy indoor restaurants and churches etc. follow the basic easy rules and our healthcare system and hospitals will be able to cope, and we can all enjoy life and travel freely without quarantine.

All the things you mention help. It would also be helpful if we had a government that was interested in slowing Covid spread. Covid testing with no penalties for failure to actually do the tests and to report positive cases are useless but then so is the government we have.

      • Anonymous says:

You do realize that the Government has no power to arrest these people? There are laws in place currently under the Public Health Law (ACT). The Police must do their job and the people must report these cases. The DPP’s office must also prosecute these people to the full extent of the law and the Judges must apply the law severely.

        • Anonymous says:

Sadly the only way for this idiotic PACT approach to Covid testing to be enforced is if people who ignore the essentially voluntary new testing regime then show up at a police station and report themselves.

    • Anonymous says:

Relax. Infections are rapidly rising in countries around the world and it is now infecting wildlife to further mutate. Relaxing is what got us to where we are now.

The boss is mad, I said I beg your pardon, I am ready to carry out your order, but there was no question of voluntary consent “… I’ve been working for a month – there are no complaints from the authorities, it’s not my fault that they refused to jab me according to the boss’s order .. …

  7. Anonymous says:

CNS – is there any chance the Govt is double counting positives of the same people. Example, I test positive on Monday, I am asked to re-test on Friday, I am still positive. Just want to make sure that positive on Friday is not counted again. I question this because the numbers are so high and the positive rate is so high.

It wouldn’t surprise me if they have messed up their data!!

CNS: On Radio Cayman, Dr Lee said that one of the delays getting the test numbers out to the public each day was the need to check that possibility and that Public Health wanted to make sure before any figures are released that they are not double counted. Obviously, that doesn’t mean mistakes are never made but I think it is safe to say they are well aware of the potential and are working on avoiding it.

How is that census doing? Anyone had someone at their door yet?

Nope. No one has come to my door, ad they aren’t getting any answers unless they show their HSA barcode as proof of vaccination

Why, when they are entering data directly into a laptop, couldn’t this have been conducted online, with residents entering the data. Cost effective!! The few people without internet/computer (most could do it via their smart phone) could have requested in person. That is what most 1st world countries do. Why keep us in the 3rd world?!?

    • Anonymous says:

Yes. Census was very invasive. Different from any other census exercise ever.

The lady, who conducted the census questions, was very polite, professional and respectful.

Clearly, some of the census questions were aimed at asking for information that, if answered honestly and openly, could be used against the people answering such questions.

It seems that the PACT’s direction to the census officers failed to consider the importance of breaching Caymanians’ and residents’ privacy rights (infringing section 9 of our Constitution’s Bill of Rights).

Questions, which seemed strategically placed, that were curiously invasive, concerned (inter alia) AML regime monitoring focused (likely for AML Supervisory Authorities) and nationality questions (likely for future legislation concerning tax issues, as has been pressed for by the European Parliament).

      • Anonymous says:

AG’s hands were all over these census questions. Wonder which PACT Ministers played an active role.

      • Anonymous says:

Agree: “Different from any other census exercise ever.”

A census is normally taken at a single point in time – say 10pm on a Sunday night. Before that time a form will have been dropped into every household. At that moment the form is filled in by hand with a note of every person in the household at that time. After the census has passed the forms are collected, scanned and the data is collated.

I also found some of the questions extremely invasive and was really surprised by them. I just wonder how many people refused to answer a lot of the questions.

I do hope the census is a success, the person who called was polite and professional.

        • Anonymous says:

Just for clarity, in my household, all questions were answered honestly.

Perhaps so honest, that the census officer might have been taken aback.

Next time, however, if census questions are that invasive (or more so), the CI Government can expect legal proceedings.

When will CI Government stop threatening and/or breaching our constitutionally-protected privacy rights (enshrined in s.9, Bill of Rights).

If there have not been cabals, including Masonic cabals, Cayman would be better functioning. Secret societies pose major espionage risk for the Cayman Islands.

When an elected MP, especially a Premier or Minister, is in the Lodge, there is unusual favour granted to Lodge brothers and unusual roadblocks put in the way of persons, who are business competitors of their Lodge brothers.

What about Lodge members, who are judges? In years gone by many people claim to have gotten off free and clear because they were Lodge brothers or because they wore a Masonic ring.

Cayman has uncontrolled spread. There must be more controls and existing ones must be enforced. These numbers of quarantined infections will result in HUGE island-wide disruptions on the availability of goods and services – private and governmental. Many infections will develop into hospitalisations over subsequent weeks.

Just when will additional controls be introduced? 3,340, CURRENTLY, active cases – what insanity. What kind of tunnel vision does the government have? This will lead to so much unnecessary suffering for so many families, and great expense for government (and the country that pays government).

Cayman journalists. Please ask, and get answers to, why are the numbers taking so long to be published. Is it just coincidental they are often being released late evening? Are the news organisations getting press releases in a timely manner?

A field hospital! Just days ago the CMO said that a stress test analysis had been done and everything was fine. How far are they going to let infections run?

CNS: Clearly, journalists are asking these questions. No idea what you imagine what more they can do.

    • Anonymous says:

We (and no country) can ever get to herd immunity with this virus as vaccinated can catch and pass on COVID (although less likely than unvaccinated), and previously infected can get reinfected.

An endemic disease that will remain the human population.

Vaccines, boosters and soon to come oral antiviral pills should make the infection fatality rate comparable to influenza.

      • Anonymous says:

That is the best case scenario. I hope that you are right.

In the mean time the current strategy of allowing everyone to get infected is only going to lead to avoidable deaths.

      • Anonymous says:

There is no cure for many of the pandemics that have occurred in the last few decades, so the belief that this one will go away and be a “common flu” is one that is certainly not rooted in scientific history

      • Anonymous says:

Completely agree. Herd immunity is often mentioned, but trouble is, that’s just not going to happen. A person doesn’t become immune to covid after catching it one time. We can catch it over and over and over again, and potentially get sicker and sicker each time we are infected because our bodies are weakened still from the prior infection.
So relying on herd immunity by allowing everyone to get sick is ‘fake news’ because catching it doesn’t make you immune from catching it again.

      • Anonymous says:

The last sentence is nothing more than a guess. Previous pandemics STILL have no cure.

Herd immunity is not achievable. COVID is not going away, you have to learnt o live with it. In all the major countries the top scientific advisors all accept that herd immunity is not achievable and COVID will be here in 5 years at elats still. That is why it’s the correct decision to open the border and get on with living with COVID.

But there is no alternative. Take the Uk and furlough for example – hundreds of billions spent paying the counties wages for a year and creating massive debt increases during lockdown. It’s not sustainable. You can’t close a countries economies and have to balance deaths whilst not overwhelming the health system with being fully open and people working and traveling freely. Covid will be here in 5 and ten years – you can’t just shut a country forever and lock people in their homes.

I’d feel more comfortable going out if everyone else there was vaccinated because I know they are less likely to have and spread covid.

Why not? Whether your are vaccinated or not, if you are negative then you are negative. Meaning you do not have the virus, meaning you cannot transmit it…as you don’t have it. So why shouldn’t someone who is negative travel between the islands? Quit with the ridiculous fear mongering.

      • Anonymous says:

Homer – as has been posted a thousand times on CNS alone, the virus has an incubation period of 14 days so a recently infected person could test negative and then fly to the Sister Islands to infect what is a highly vulnerable population.

        • Anonymous says:

That is true of both vaccinated and unvaccinated. Granted, vaccinated have a lesser probability of contracting the virus, however very far from zero.

        • Anonymous says:

Homer @10:47 – valid point. One problem. A vaccinated person can also catch the virus and carry it to the sister islands even showing a negative test. They just have a different incubation period and window of infection. Still there. So – not a great argument especially starting by calling someone “Homer”…

      • Anonymous says:

19:31 an, one can test negative and still have the Virus and spread it . So its much safer to have to have BOTH the Vaccine AND test negative ,

      • Anonymous says:

10:31, So how do you know if someone is negative or positive if you don’t test them before they get on the flight?

There is a reason why American and Canadian airlines require a test 72 hours before getting on a flight.

But I know, we are a brilliant people, you included.

        • Anonymous says:

You don’t need a Covid test to fly within Canada but you must be vaccinated if you are over the age of 12.

          • Miami Dave says:

2:08, Wonder where you are getting your information from? I flew into Toronto from Miami last week. I was required to be fully vaccinated and have a Rapid Anti Gen test 72 hours before entry to Canada.

      • Anonymous says:

Bobo, its the positives we are worried about not the negatives.

        Don’t you get it?

As we are no longer following a COVID elimination strategy, government needs to catch up here. First of all – eliminate the exit PCR tests. People should not be locked up in excess of 14 days. It is universally accepted elsewhere that you are not contagious around by the 10 day mark. It is also widely accepted that getting a negative LFT after being COVID positive means you are no longer contagious. PCRs are known to pick up on dormant virus and when you combine that with the HIGHER THAN NOMRAL detection rate at which Cayman is running the PCR machine, it results in too many people being held captive/prisoner for no actual risk to anyone. This madness needs to stop!!! People who are positive should be told to isolate for 10 days and take an LFT. If negative, get on with your life.

    • Anonymous says:

Your comment is scientifically illiterate but I grant that from recent decisions it almost appears that Covid elimination has been dropped in favour of sacrificing disposable people.

      • Jambo says:

The WHO and CDC both advise that people who have contracted covid are no longer infectious by day 10. It is also true that negative LFT’s indicate that you’re not infectious. Further, PCR’s do pick up dormant virus. Cayman does have a higher detection rate – 40 CT instead of 35 CT. There’s no scientific illiteracy at all. The facts check out and its accurate.

    • Anonymous says:

LFT is all you need for the US. That should be it.

Get vaccinated people before the new COVID variant arrives from UK.

  26. Anonymous says:

105 Cases recorded in the Sister Islands
    55 fully vaccinated.
    6 partially vaccinated.
Total of this group – 61

    61/ 105 = 58.09%

So of the group infected, almost 60% were completely vaccinated.

CNS: In order to make sense of the statistics and not just come up with meaningless numbers (which is what you have done), you have to factor in the vaccination rate, which in the Sister Islands is upwards of 90%. To explain, if the vaccination rate was 100% then you would expect 100% of cases to be in vaccinated people. This would not mean that the vaccine effectiveness is nil. So, what is notable from the SI stats is the disproportionately high rate of unvaccinated cases.

We already know that breakthrough cases are possible. The question is whether the vaccine is keeping these people safe from serious illness or death. With a booster shot, the effectiveness of the Pfizer shot is around 92%.

    • Anonymous says:

Agree with you analysis CNS. However, what might be interesting, and should be easy with the smaller more isolated grouping on the Sister Islands, is to look at either the 60 persons still infected, or the 45 that have recovered and see what percentage of those were fully vaccinated. If the vaccinated recover at a faster rate than the unvaccinated, that would offer some proof of the efficacy of the vaccine.

    • Anonymous says:

      This proves the vaccine works.

The vaccination rate is around 80%, so if you have 1000 people, and 200 COVID cases.. of those say 100 are vaccinated an 100 are unvaccinated…

That would mean 12.5% of vaccinated got COVID and 50% of unvaxed got COVID. Even thought he same number of total positives are vaxed/unvaxed

You can’t compare ’61 vaxed and 44 unvaxed total′ numbers and then say vaccinated more likely to get it! You have to factor in the vaccination rate Absolute numbers of cases will always show more vaxed when you have 80 per cent of people vaxed!

Your total of 61 vaxed shows that the vaccine works, and it means a higher proportion of unvaxed are positive.

    • Anonymous says:

I am not sure about the population of the sister islands, but of the entire population:

In the hospital currently are 6 people out of the 78% of the population that are vaccinated and
13 people out of the 22% of the population that are unvaccinated.

Seems to me you are about 8 times more likely to end up seriously ill if you are not vaccinated.

Important question: When people arrive in Cayman on or after the 20th do they need to purchase their own lateral flow tests or will they be handed out at the airport upon arrival? There doesn’t seem to be any clarity about this on any site that I have seen, and this would seemingly affect quite a few people.

  30. Anonymous says:

I know that you can still get Covid if vaxxed, but I have to wonder how many of those who have it were vaxxed over 6 months ago?
So many unknowns still. But I do think the vaccine is working thankfully and hope all those that still chose not to change their minds.

  31. Anonymous says:

I see in the Compost that PACT is working to get the field hospital ready by the end of the year. On the basis of past performance that suggests that the Covid peak will be about a month before that.

  32. Anonymous says:

Thank you CNS for publishing the information on what is counted as a Covid related death. Too many Covid deniers have been trying to minimize Covid by discounting deaths, like the 2 recent deaths, in which Covid is a contributing factor.

  33. Anonymous says:

So using the Sister Islands as a microcosm study we can confirm that you have a better chance of contracting Covid if you are fully or partially “vaccinated”. “There have been 105 total cases recorded in Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Out of the total number of cases in the Sister Islands, 55 were fully vaccinated, 6 were partially vaccinated (Total -61) and 44 were unvaccinated. Should we continue to “Follow The Science”?

CNS: Yes, you should follow the science, but first you have to understand the science. The population on Cayman Brac is older and there is also a high rate of diabetes, high blood pressure, hypertension, etc, which would make people vulnerable to breakthrough cases. If those people were vaccinated, then the vaccine may well have kept them alive.

What is notable in an incredibly highly vaccinated population is the disproportionately high number of unvaccinated cases. To explain, if the vaccination rate was 100% then you would expect 100% of cases to be in vaccinated people. This would not mean that the vaccine effectiveness is nil.

    • Just wow! says:

I’m pretty sure you already know the answer and it is very gracious of CNS to explain this so politely.

If you really don’t understand the underlying point, there is very little hope for you.

Otherwise you must feel the need to make this kind of anti-vax argument for your own strange reasons. If you are successful in even influencing one more person not to get vaccinated that is a shame.

    • Anonymous says:

        • Anonymous says:

That’s why we have so many clowns here. People tell them their IQ is the same as their shoe size, solution = bigger shoes.

    • Anonymous says:

Further to CNS statement, assuming you can’t comprehend it. if there are 2500 people in CB and 80% are fully vaccinated that means that there are 55 people out of 2000 that tested positive (2.75%) versus 44 out of 500 which is 8.8%. Additionally I don’t know if we can say that CB is 80% vaccinated. I would speculate that the rate is much lower over there, if anyone has the stats please post link

I love the people clicking dislike to these responses and explanations. the dislike means ‘I don’t like maths and actual facts – I am an anti vaxer and want my conspiracy theories to be correct instead’

    • Anonymous says:

@CNS – appreciate the explanation to help people grasp it. Can you go one further and find out how many of the unvaccinated people who have been positive were under the minimum age to get the vaccine – and thus could NOT be vaccinated? I mean – that would go a long way to understanding – because then it would give us more fully accurate numbers of how it is affecting the unvaccinated by choice group.

CNS: Honestly, they seem to be having a lot of problems getting any information out right now and expecting a breakdown would only delay it further. I agree it would be useful.

      • Anonymous says:

More than useful. I think it would paint a clearer picture on the chances of catching COVID of the vaxxed and unvaxxed by choice. If children do not have a choice at the moment and CDC data shows they are affected very little, then why are they included in the numbers? The number would look very different.

  34. Anonymous says:

we should only be counting the number of people on ventilators or in hospital.
meanwhile…cig is being criminally negligent by not enforcing scoial restrictions on the unvaxxed. they need to be protected and we need to stop them getting covid so our health service is not over-run.

    • Anonymous says:

Okay so this is the second time in the last couple days I’m reading the break down of the vax vs unvaxxed positive cases in the Brac. Where is the same break down for Grand Cayman? Have I missed this or are these stats not available?

CNS – Any word on what their models say? If we are anything like Bermuda the collateral damage from this “safe” reopening, the one we have long been promised the government is ready for, appears unacceptable. Is it really fair that their modeling is being kept from us? Are they afraid that they may be accused of knowingly sacrificing Caymanian lives on the alter of (unnecessary) commercial expedience.

And why the hell is it going to take another 6 weeks before we have a field hospital again!

CNS: No, they haven’t made and models public and very much doubt that they would.

    • Anonymous says:

Pretty sure they can’t actually staff the Field Hospital and it is more like performance art…

You can’t have field hospital construction interrupting Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas play rehearsals, etc.
