140 more people positive for COVID in latest results

(CNS): The daily number of new positive cases remains high after another 140 people from a batch of 934 PCR tests were found to be infected with SARS-CoV-2 yesterday. Chief Medical Officer Dr John Lee reported that as at 8am on Thursday, 25 November, 138 more people in the community and two travellers tested positive. The total number of cases recorded across all three islands since the start of the pandemic is now 6,599.

There are currently 4,132 active cases of the virus and 4,610 people are in quarantine. Hospital admissions have declined slightly to 27 patients from a high earlier in the week of 29. On the Sister Islands, another seven people tested positive over the last 24 hours, bringing the number of active cases to 19.

There have so far been 115 cases recorded on Cayman Brac and Little Cayman but 96 people have now recovered. Out of the total number of cases in the Sister Islands, 59 were fully vaccinated, six were partially vaccinated, and 50 were unvaccinated.

Meanwhile, there was a slight increase in the national vaccination rate for people who have had both shots of a COViD-19 vaccine. 79% of the estimated population of 71,106 people is now full vaccinated, while 57,918 people (81%) have had at least one shot. Almost 10,000 people have also had a booster shot.

If anybody knows what social media the members of government use perhaps they could let them know that the rest of the world is taking steps to limit the spread of the Omicron variant including the UK, the EU and the US. It is either they don’t know or don’t care or both at this stage.

  2. Anonymous says:

There is too much evidence now that the world has not responded appropriately to the covid virus. No matter where you stand on vaccines, its undeniable to any objective observer that we’ve got this wrong. The new strains will continue regardless of vaccination programs as it is simple unarguable fact that we cannot vaccinate every human and animal (the virus jumps species) at the same level at the same time (there is no Thanos ‘snap’ in real life!).

There have been many doctors pleading to ONLY vaccinate vulnerable people and let the healthy among us (most of us) to acquire and handle the virus and enable it to become an endemic virus akin to flu, etc. Instead we’re trying to vaccinate as many as possible, flying in the face of historical precedent.

It’s clearly a mistake. We should be focusing on therapies now. There are many available. And we should be focusing on treatment protocols.

As for vaccines, they’re simply not doing what we hoped for most of us. The healthy among us don’t need them, and we shouldn’t be lining up for 4-6 month additional boosts. It’s not normal, not healthy and not worthwhile. Our immune systems work fine. For the vulnerable, sure, vaccination.

The rest of us? we’ve just got to get on living before we end of living to die.

    • Anon says:

      Which doctors would these be?
How do you determine who is vulnerable? Healthy young people have died from covid, yet by your reasoning they would be refused vaccines.

      • Anonymous says:

Sooner or later there will be a vaccine breakthrough anyway and we are back to square one. Either a proper vaccine is required or let it runs its course like sars 1.

    • Anonymous says:

That’s not actually why doctors are pleading to only vaccinate the vulnerable. Its because even a little bit of vaccine saves a lot of lives so it saves more people if its spread out more.

      Think of it like this:
      – I have 12 doses of vaccine. I can
      — I can triple-vaccinate (two doses plus booster) four people, and three of them will not die from COVID.
      — I can double-vaccinate (two doses, no booster) six people, and five of them will not die from COVID.
      — I can single-vaccinate (one dose) twelve people and eight of them will not die from COVID.

If some of those doses go to less vulnerable people it ‘wastes’ the vaccine even more, from a total number of persons saved perspective.

The doctors are not asking to spread the vaccine around because ‘the vaccines are not working’ or even because they think the healthy among us can ‘handle the virus’. No. They are saying ‘we know if we spread the vaccine around more people n the countries with currently high vaccine rates will get very sick, and maybe die, but also that more people in the currently low vaccine countries will survive, for an overall decrease in deaths around the world’.

This government is pathetically useless at acting fast. Quick action is needed or do they want this to rip through the community too?

PACT certainly acted fast in voting themselves a raise last spring although that is the only occasion I can think of.

While our government is once again asleep, it is apparent that even marginally competent governments are banning travel from southern Africa. Just got a news item that ALL EU member states have now banned travel from Southern Africa as has Japan.

Hope CBC are staying vigilant. Hmmm, I can see it now:

“Where did you arrive from?” “Abidjan.”
        “Where’s that?” “Western Africa.”
“And before that?” “Windhoek and Joberg”
        “Uh-uh. OK folks, welcome back!”

The vaccine we thankfully have, was developed from a historic strain from 2 years ago. Sure, it helps a bit, but rational experts are also concerned globally, including WHO, about how it will stack up against new variants of interest and of concern. Should these career professionals be dismissed as obsessive hyper complainers?

  13. Anonymous says:

from UK Gov notes of SAGE mtg in July this year – we were warned that mass vaccination in early viral pandemics can lead to near disaster, and here we have NU today…it will not end anytime soon due to all the mistakes made, we should only be vaccinating the known vulnerables and letting natural immunity help the rest of us –

    9. There are four major risks associated with high numbers of infections. These are an increase in hospitalisations and deaths, more ‘Long-COVID’; workforce absences (including in the NHS); and the increased risk of new variants emerging. The combination of high prevalence and high levels of vaccination creates the conditions in which an immune escape variant is most likely to emerge. The likelihood of this happening is unknown, but such a variant would present a significant risk both in the UK and internationally.

The emphasis on ‘not known’. Stop being an alarmist and just vaccinate.

    • Anonymous says:

Interesting, except that the Nu Mu variant did not develop under high levels of vaccination, so the quote is irrelevant now aint it?

Also the risk of mutation is from high numbers of infections. The level of vaccination is irrelevant except in what you call it.
      a) high infection, low vaccination = immune resistant
      b) high infection, high vaccination = immune escape

All the later means is that ‘it escaped the immune response initiated by the vaccination’. Something which by definition can only happen in (high) vaccination scenarios. Remember that the virus is in competition with the immune response, whether your immune response is ‘vaccine enhanced’ or ‘unenhanced/unvaccinated’, or even ‘enhanced by previous exposure’, i.e., you survived an earlier infection. So regardless of level of population vaccination the virus is trying to evolve to an immune resistant state (call it what you will). And the best chance it has to do that is with a high prevelance of infections. So do what you can to keep infections down – physical distance, hand wash, mask up (over your nose); and get vaccinated (statistically reduces spread, i.e., lowers virus prevalence, especially in conjunction with the other interventions).

Wait for it, Kenny B is doing another sombre video as we speak in which he will announce that the new ‘Nu’ variant gets seasick and therefore the 2000 potentially infected tourists arriving in December without any check on where they have arrived from pose no threat.

Will those arriving in Cayman from South Africa in the next 6 week be required to quarantine? I know the current answer is no, but let’s see if CIG puts in such a policy. There are A LOT of South Africans coming into Cayman in the next 6 weeks, either new recruits or residents returning from vacation. Just where I work (an accounting firm), we have about 25 arrivals (plus spouses, boy/girlfriends etc).

The government and the #readytoopen crew don’t care. It’s time to get back to making some serious money and if people die, they die. People die all the time. Get used to it. If you are unvaccinated or fat, make sure your will is in order. Or hide in the closet for the next six months because people are going to be arriving on cruise ships and flying in from South Africa all the time.

    • Hubert says:

We need to ban all people coming here who have been in South Africa the past 60 days.

There aren’t any direct flights from SA, or from anywhere else across the pond, apart from the U.K. which has already banned travel from Southern Africa.
And if they come from other locations the landing requirements will likely catch any and all possible infections. If not Caymans requirements for pre-departure testing will be yet another firewall.
Just calm down and think logically instead of like a headless chicken.

It is amazing to me how many in these comments seem to want people to catch this and die. How horrible! Get vaccinated and get on with your life. There are many other diseases and viruses out there to kill you as well but you don’t seem worried about those. Oh wait! You had the polio, measles, mumps, and whooping cough vaccines to prevent those and possibly the flu vaccine that kills too. Get vaxxed!

  17. Anonymous says:

You see, all you “we’re vaccinated, so open up” protagonists are more than short-sighted. A highly transmissible variant not susceptible to the current vaccine was always on the cards. One b.1.1.529 infected tourist from S. Africa on the incoming cruise ship or on an unrestricted flight and . . .

    • Anonymous says:

You got to understand, some people just don’t care. The Chinese made a virus and it’s made it more likely to die on any given day. Some accept this and that there isn’t much to be done and just want to get on with life. Some think that by sacrificing freedom the govt can save us, but they can’t. No mandates have been effective at stopping spread. The only thing that’s been effective is the vaccine preventing death. So get vaccinated and come to terms with the fact that covid is permanent.

      • Anonymous says:

It’s more nuanced that that. It’s not just about stopping the spread, it about slowing down the rate of transmission so the healthcare facilities are not overwhelmed. Yes, most of us will be infected at some time but lets reduce the risk of us all becoming infected in a short period of time. Some loss of freedom is expected when restrictions are imposed to SLOW DOWN transmission.

    • Anonymous says:

From my experience the vaccinated are far more careful with distancing, masks and hand washing than unvaccinated as they are generally better read and educated on global covid issues.

      • Miami Dave says:

At this point no amount of education is going to convince the anti-Vaxers about the merits of getting vaccinated. It will only be when family members and good friends start dying that they will get it.

A large part of this is directly due to fact that people who are uneducated simply don’t grasp the concepts related to global COVID issues and vaccinations. They fall for conspiratorial lines about the vaccine.

Very hard after all this time to find empathy for people who die or get very sick on these islands who are not vaccinated.

        • Anonymous says:

Yeah, lots of direct flights coming in from Africa. – What you want is the gateway countries doing the banning. Because by the time you’ve gone from S. Africa to London to Cayman and spent that much time in airports the chance of your COVID being from home is likely equal to the chance you picked it up en route. So the person travelling from London to Cayman caught omicron form the person travelling Johannesburg-London-Birmingham. Cayman banning African migrants would not be sufficient.

People unable to easily fight off the virus become incubators and factories for new variants. That’s why getting vaccinated is SO important. The unvaccinated could create a version of the virus that could be much worse than we already have.

There is a new highly mutated virus emerging in Africa that is said to be so mutated that it is much more transmissible than Delta and possible that it evade any protection from the vaccines and from any partial immunity that would have come from having covid before.

I urge our government to take this new threat very seriously and look to return to a 14 day quarantine for all new arrivals. Just look how easily Delta spread through our community. Make it even more transmissible and potentially more dangerous and we could be devastated.

  23. Anonymous says:

Very difficult. Likely the new variant is already in the USA and Europe and has been for some weeks. Good however that the UK has banned Africa flights today – if the US follow suit that naturally protects us as there are no direct flights into cayman.

This is why I say people need to learn to live with covid – was never possible to keep cayman covid free and it will be here and mutating with new variants for decades. There is no such thing as hers immunity with this. People really need to make sure they get there booster in the next month or when called, and social distance.

We know from the latest figures that of all cayman cases, 3 per cent of all vaccinated people on island have covid but are mainly vary old with underlying serious conditions. 23 per cent of unvaccinated have it. You are at least 8 times more likely to catch covid in cayman of you are unvaccinated.

The early indication we have of this variant is it may be more transmissible than the Delta variant and the vaccines that we currently have may be less effective against it.

Now to be clear, we have not detected any of this new variant in the UK at this point in time. But we’ve always been clear that we will take action to protect the progress that we have made.

So what we will be doing is from midday tomorrow we will be suspending all flights from six, southern African countries and we will add in those countries to the travel red list. Those countries are South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe and Botswana. We will be requiring anyone that arrives from those countries from 4am on Sunday to quarantine in hotels.

If anyone arrives before then they should self-isolate at home and take a PCR test on day two and day eight. If anyone has arrived from any of those countries over the last 10 days, we would ask them to take PCR tests.”

So just how will PACT know this virus? Will it announce itself as to which flight it will be arriving on? will it come from London via BA or on Jet Blue from New York? Has it booked a cruise and hasn’t told us?

There is a lot of things the PACt Government can do but seeing and ensuring a virus doesn’t arrive on our shore, it is highly unlikely that can be ensured. Even if we were to lock down again you do realize that just like how Delta got here before we reopened this one could get here too.

What we all need to do here is stop being ignorant about his virus. We know what works, get your vaccines, wear your masks, social distance and keep washing your hands every chance you get. This is the only way to slow the spread of the virus. It is not something that is tangible that we can see or avoid. It is in the air and in people’s bodies that act as hosts and spread it around. No government in the world can ensure that it doesn’t spread only the people of this country can and until everyone smartness up and forgets the political BS covid will continue to rage.

??…banning travel from certain countries?…when has that ever worked?….it has already spread to 3 countries(we know of)…
time to learn to live with viruses as they can’t be boxed in.
and time to eradicate the filthy cultures where they originate from as was the case with covid and china.

Dangerous talk, Komrade. Did you actually read and think about what you posted before you did so? I hope not. I hope you are not a genocide-supporting monster.

I feel no friendship with PRC/CCP, however “eradicating”? Please control your fervor.

The accounting firms will be bringing in quite a few staff from South Africa at end of December. So another month of spread in SA. Will be hard to keep out with no quarantine here.

6:01, They will not be able to get here as the flight route to Cayman is via London which has taken action today to shut down new travelers from South Africa.

One case of the new variant detected here will result in the USA shutting down all flights to Cayman. Canada will do the same thing.

Viruses change and new variants inevitably appear. No need to panic, the South African National Institute for Infectious Diseases tweeted.

…according to scientists, such an abundance of mutations can work against the virus, making it unstable. Therefore, it is too early to say that the new strain will become a global problem.

We must watch it closely. At the moment, there is no reason for particular concern, “- emphasizes geneticist from University College London François Ballou.
“It’s hard to say anything definite just by looking at mutations,” adds Professor Lawrence Young, virologist at the University of Warwick School of Medicine.

But there have been many variants that looked bad on paper before, but haven’t taken off.
There are early signs this virus is spreading in South Africa and may already be in every province in the country.
But the big questions – how much does it evade vaccines, is it more severe, does it spread faster that Delta – are unanswerable for now.

It is starting to come down.

Good news as the numbers trend downwards.

  32. Anonymous says:

Numbers are dropping slightly. Seems like people are starting to wear masks and social distance. 934 tests and only 2 travelers. Still shows this is all community spread.

    • Anonymous says:

Yep! We can’t blame travelers. It’s mostly spread in the community.

    • Anonymous says:

Nothing to do with masks. It’s running out of hosts.

    • Anonymous says:

more like cayman likely reaching a level of herd immunity…huge infection + high vax rates.
people must remeber though people(mostly old and sick) will continue to die from/with covid over the next 12-18 months.

    • Anonymous says:

Numbers coming down because the numbers of unvaccinated yet to be infected are falling- over 90% of the over 12 are vaccinated. And yeah I know vaccinated people can catch and transmit as well, but far less likely to do so. So the virus has been burning through that unvaccinated group hence very high initial rates. Will taper off as there are fewer unvaccinated to infect given the higher resist amongst the vaccinated. But going to be a while before it’s finished with us for sure.

Yes. ALMOST all community spread, and all traceable back to a single visitor, probably from Jamaica.

At least they weren’t from Southern Africa. I do hope PACT are paying attention. We had better be prepared to implement strict quarantines on visitors from certain regions.

      Duh?

    • Anonymous says:

That’s due to people falsifying LFT tests
