Minister makes sombre video about return of tourism
(CNS): As government increasingly hints that quarantine will be lifted in November for securely verified vaccinated travellers, in preparation for a full reopening of the borders, Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan has appeared in a sombre video delivering a message urging people to prepare for living with COVID-19 because the “borders can’t stay closed for ever”.
Bryan said the community has to have a discussion about reopening the borders to re-start the tourism industry and re-engage with the rest of the world. He said it was legitimate for people to be scared and anxious but that COVID was not going away and there are ways of “sharing our space with this virus”.
Talking about preparing for reopening “when there is an invisible threat that scares us”, he urged people to keep their bodies healthy and immune system strong as well as getting vaccinated.
A summary of the short message presented in the dark, gloomy, rather dramatic video and solemn background music appeared to be: we know you are worried but we are going to open; it will be fine, so get ready.
Government has not yet stated when it will now move into Phase 4 of the reopening plan, but it appears that the pause on the gradual lifting of quarantine measures will no longer continue until the year-end.
No press conference was held this week on government’s current position on the reopening plan but Parliament will be sitting Monday to steer through the introduction of mandatory vaccinations for work permit holders and the issue is likely to be discussed during the debate.
CNS has contacted the opposition to find out if they are supporting the amendments to the relevant laws to require permit holders to be vaccinated and we are awaiting a response from the PPM Leader Roy McTaggart.
However, his predecessor, Alden McLaughlin, who was a staunch advocate for the vaccine and getting as many people as possible to take the shots when he was in office, has been posting in social media chat groups that the laws being brought by the government may fall foul of the Constitution.
There is also some backlash in the community by people advocating for choice, despite the public health implications, and a demonstration is expected outside Government House, the governor’s residence, on Saturday.

Just watched that video as a tourist, but even if I was watching as a resident, I would question what was the purpose of that video. It I did not say when the opening was. It did not tell people anything about tourism except they were going to reopen at some point (which has been being said for the last 1 1/2 years). No mention of what is going to be an acceptable form of the CDC vaccine card since the digital format is not possible to 80% of your travel base. What is happening to the quarantine? When? Yes, the video was dramatic (if you want to call it that), but helpful, definitely not.

I agree that there needs to be a discussion of a number of things that government does not want to confront in any public forum. So far government has refused to present any comparative data on the relative costs of dropping quarantine compared with keeping quarantine. I suspect that this is because they do not want the people to know that the costs of dropping quarantine, including increased healthcare costs, lost wages, shutdowns, closed schools etc. is greater than government wants to disclose. Either that or they have no idea how to do math.
Unfortunately I don’t think such an indepth economic analysis was done, or even thought about. Remember Premier Panton said the decision to pause the border opening was based on emotions!!! Not economic rationale.

Most US travelers will not quarantine as they do not have that much vacation time. What will be happening with the quarantine?
The fact that most of us in the US don’t and won’t have “securely verifiable vaccine proof” makes it much easier for CIG to consider reopening because it means fewer people will qualify to travel without quarantine. Tourism will not return until there are no entry restrictions. The holiday season is lost. Airlines are not going to jump for joy if PACT decides to move forward with the reopening plan.
I was finally able to access my QR code from my CVS vaccine! Woohoo! That, along with my CDC card and state-issued immunization effort for triple proof! Now, if only they’d get to a phase in reopening where airlines found it feasible to return!

There are plenty other drugs that are available to help prevent serious illness from Covid – Ivermectin (the human kind) and NAC (N-Acetylcysteine) are 2 examples that have been shown to do just that.

The rest of the Caribbean is not like Cayman. We are the most vaccinated of any Caribbean island. Bermuda is a fair bit behind Cayman in terms of vaccination rate.
Not true – Bermuda is 67% fully vaccinated and we are 71. Please also note that 20% of those dying from the Covid Delta variant in Bermuda are fully vaccinated according to the Bermuda government.
Our vaccination rate is higher than that as they count students overseas as part of our population but don’t count any of their vaccinations given overseas as part of the vaccinated tally. It was a s#%* video and in such bad taste. I don’t think there is a right or wrong answer. No one knows the path forward but I do know that our PACT government are weak and non transparent. They are like ignorant children unable to read advice and think beyond fear. No one want covid, but a life live locked up and in fear with no income is not a life worth living.

The problem is when your choice interferes with my ability to receive urgent medical treatment regarding something I have no choice about. If they are not anti-vaxxers why are they sending around voice notes saying not to bring Ivermectin or anti-vaxx signs and to cover themselves with hoodies and wide brimmed hats. What do they think we are going to do to them? If you want to stand for something why tell your supporters to do this..Aren’t they supposed to be promoting Freedom of Choice? Isn’t much freedom of choice if you are told what to do is it?

Your logic is flawed. Yes some people may support ivermectin, but the point is freedom to choose the vaccine or not (not freedom of choice about anything in life). Anyone organizing protests will be trying to stay on message, so has to try and get supporters to do the same.
I am vaccinated and am going with many other vaccinated people. Your assumption is completely wrong. People from all walks of life believe in Freedom of choice. Many people that will be there are also business owners. Most if not all are vaccinated.
Open the borders.
Get rid of the quarantine.
